This is awful. Rice thought they could win without even trying, UTEP showed up to play volleyball.

A Lennon ace got the Owls to 21-23 ... but two Miner kills won it for them.

25-18 in the decisive 4th set. WooHOO!!

As bad as I've seen us play this year. Give UTEP credit-- they played exceptionally well, and IMO, outplayed us, but save for our improved blocking (which was superb), our play was really poor. In particular, our setting was horrific. Save for the middle sets for Anota, the vast majority of the sets were 10+ feet back from the net, and many were to mid-court. Also, Nicole appeared a bit off the entire match.

I haven't seen the stats yet (why were they not shown live on the mobile app???), but I'd be shocked if our kill% was better than .200. We really need to clean it up and play much more efficient if we're to have any chance against WKU, who are currently playing on all cylinders.

I stand corrected (now that the stats are finally posted at Riceowls.com), Nicole actually had a pretty strong all-around match: 21 kills (.378 kill%, only 4 attack errors), 18 digs, 2 blocks, 3 services aces)....and the team kill% was .308.

I disagree about your poor setting comment, Walt. What hurt us was our poor dig transfers to the setter. UTEP's back line consistently had clean, accurate dig transfers to their setter, putting her in perfect position to set up their spikes. On our end we consistently forced our setters to move too much for the ball, resulting in sets from out-of-position locations, which in turn resulted in Nicole and others having to spike from out-of-position locations. If dig transfers are not clean, everything suffers. So many times our outside hitters had to implement that "defensive dink" hit over the net rather than spiking the ball. I think that was because they were put in awkward positions to try and spike it. Also, if our setters are having to set while on the run, the defense has a better idea where we will be setting it to - so they are able to more accurately predict when it goes to Nicole, and hence more effectively gang up on her for the block. If the setter gets the ball cleanly in the middle, she can go multiple directions with the set, which prevents the defense from knowing where to go for their block.

Pay close attention on Sunday, if we do in fact play WKU in the finals. Which team is most consistently getting clean, accurate dig transfers to their setter - that's the team that will win.

Quick follow-up: Watch the WKU setter on Sunday. What makes her so great is that even with bad dig transfers, she is still able to consistently get to the ball and make accurate sets to their different net people. That is why she was the Conference USA setter of the year. Her performance against us earlier this month was very impressive.

Thanks for your perspective. I'll watch that more carefully this afternoon when, hopefully, we play cleaner and with more energy. UTSA upsetting UNT was certainly a surprise. We swept both, but UNT played us really tight the first two sets.

Rice is sleepwalking at the start of this match, too. 2-7 and a timeout.
