Davidson Wildcats

Davidson is hungry for a victory after beginning their season 0-2. The Wildcats lost a pair of road games by double digits, one to a ranked Auburn squad and the other to Charlotte. Saturday marks their home opener and one they will assuredly expect to win.

An NIT participant last season, the Wildcats went 23-10 against D-I opponents and an impressive 14-4 (2nd) in the Atlantic 10, losing in the A-10 Semi-Finals to Saint Louis. They then fell to Lipscomb in the first round of the NIT. This season, Davidson is picked to finish 2nd once again, headlined by returning A-10 Player of the Year Jon Axel Gudmundsson and 2018 A-10 Rookie of the Year Kellan Grady, both of whom are Preseason 1st team All-A10 selections.

Gudmunddson, a 6-5 senior guard from Grindavik, Iceland, was top 5 in the A-10 in 6 different categories last season, including scoring (16.9 ppg - 4th), Assists (4.8 - 5th) and Minutes (36.8 - 4th). He was also the only player in the A-10 to post a Triple-Double in a win against Rhode Island on Feb 22. It was Davidson's first Triple-Double in 46 years. So far this season, Gudmundsson has been quiet from a scoring perspective, averaging 9.0 ppg thru 2 contests. However, he has pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out 8 assists while also swiping 3 steals.

Grady, a 6-5 junior guard from Boston, is off to a solid albeit inefficient start to the 2019-20 campaign. He's averaged 13.0 ppg and 3.0 apg with 3 steals, but he's also only shooting .200 from three point range and has 6 turnovers. Last year, Grady had 13 20+ point outings and received 3 A-10 Player of the Week honors. Thus we can anticipate an outburst coming soon.

Another backcourt mate, 6-5 redshirt sophomore Luke Frampton, has been impressive, averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and a team high 2.0 steals. He is shooting a team best .538 (7-13) from three point range. The starting 4-guard unit is rounded off by 6-5 redshirt freshman Mike Jones, who has posted 8.5 points on .357 (5-14) shooting from the perimeter.

The lone starting frontcourt spot is mostly a committee, manned by starting 6-10 Austrian Luka Brajkovic. The sophomore is primarily a defensive presence, with 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest. He only averages 19.5 minutes per contest, with relief coming from 6-8 junior big man Bates Jones (0.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 18.0 minutes). Another key bench option is 6-7 freshman forward Hyunjung Lee (3.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 2-7 from 3).

One question mark is the health of 6-3 junior guard Carter Collins. The Chapel Hill native came off the bench to put up a team-high 18 points on 5-10 shooting and 7-8 free throw shooting against Auburn, but was ruled out in the game against Charlotte for an undisclosed injury. His status for Saturday is thus up in the air.

Linssen and Dodd may be able to take advantage of Davidson's weakness in the post on Saturday. The Wildcats have not been able to assert themselves at the 5 spot, with 0 team blocks and only 28.0 team rebounds thru 2 contests. Opponents have blocked 8 shots on the other end of the court. Granted, their level of competition likely had a lot to do with that. But it should help the Seahawks in the rebounding department to be facing a fellow team that uses 4 guards in their starting lineup.

Turnovers have also been a bit of an issue for Davidson, as they are averaging 14.0 per contest. Gudmundsson and Grady have combined for 12 turnovers as Davidson doesn't seem to have a "true" point guard on their roster. But they make up for this in other ways. Davidson is a very good three-point shooting team, and should build on their .340 team percentage as the season goes on. They also do a good job of defending the perimeter, holding a pair of good teams to just .278 from the perimeter.

In short, this is a very talented and fairly deep Davidson squad, especially if they can get Collins back healthy. They were picked to finish 2nd in one of the best basketball conferences in the country for a reason and now host an intra-state rival in their home opener, looking for their first W of the season. Odds are, they'll get it.

For the 2nd year in a row, CB has a chance to get his first "statement victory." Last year they came into Trask after we had one 3 of 4 and handled ECU with ease, and we just couldn't get it done. While their loss to Charlotte rose my eyebrows, I think it was more of an anomaly than anything. Which concerns me... I'd rather have them blown out Charlotte as expected than coming into our game thinking they have something to prove. Just seeing the names Grady and Gudmundsson let me know they're going to be a handful for our guys. I'm interested to see what the line will be.

I also wouldn't put it past Charlotte to be instantly improved in Year 2 under their new coach, Ron Sanchez.

At the least, that looks like a good win for JMU.

ESPN'S match up predictor gives Davidson a 94.2% chance of winning.

Worst hawks game I’ve watched live was at their house 2 years ago. They destroyed us. Can’t make it this year but we have to play better than we did that night.

It’s definitely going to be a tough place to play. It’s also going to be our first road game. That by itself will be a test. Will they play with the same energy? The energy didn’t feel the same against Campbell as it was against UNC for whatever reason. Let’s hope they get that energy level back up. As 82 and others have posted, let’s hope we see some of that press that Coach said he was going to implement.

RE: @ Davidson (Saturday, Nov 16 - 7 PM)
Yes, some type of pressure after a made FG would be nice to slow them down kind of like what Campbell or UNCG does. That's easier said than done though against a Bob McKillop team. They can dice you up via the pass and you just know that he will have an effective press breaker-still not a bad plan if done correctly just to eat up 10-15 seconds. Regardless, I would love to see our team play good half court defense and stop the 3 again. That gives up mismatches leading to drives if they keep switching, but you never want to see the Wildcats going off from 3 either. That guy from Iceland has some funk going to the hole from what I remember and a few others that gets them to the FT line a bunch. Perhaps we do mix things up with some at least token pressure but we haven't really seen that yet so I wouldn't expect a ton of it unless they get some mileage from it. They could save it for the 2nd half too as a change up, but that's just me.

On the road, you do have to score too. We have more driving options this year and I hope that continues. Good aggressive drives to finish or drop-off and kick is always a good thing if they go man. We shall see. I do like the pieces that we have this year.

Wow. I'm not sold on the Hawks yet, but I really can't imagine we lose by 17 to Davidson. If they beat us by 17, we're going to have a bad year.

Just looked at last years game and they torched us on offense. They shot 65.22% in the 2nd. half and 56.9% for the game. Also shot 13-29 from 3 at 44.8%. Final score was 91-85. If the score is that high agaiin, I think we're in trouble.

RE: @ Davidson (Saturday, Nov 16 - 7 PM)
Yep, last year we just couldn't get a stop in the 2nd half and it was depressing. They had 1 or 2 guys that would drive the ball at the end of the clock or hit a 3 ball. It's a nightmare dealing with Bob "Freaking"" McKillop. I actually bought one of his videos and used much of it for a team that I coached. He's a legendary coach and so undervalued. And, he has stuck with Davidson too which is cool.

Regardless, our coaches and some of our Hawks are a bit familiar with his style now and our team has more length, depth and athleticism to keep the 3 ball down a bit. It's a good test. I'm more interested in how we compete than the final score in this tilt.

Hawks will have to score effectively too in this one on the road. Settling for contested 3 balls won't work here on the road so they will need to drive the ball effectively regardless of the Wildcat's defense. Let's see what happens.

Again, at some point the scoring defense statistic becomes an important metric in measuring where we stand. We cant get torched and say that defense is improved, and we can't be improved without better defense.

But I think this game could be really intriguing because of what looks like real 3pt defense improvement. Last year team after team lit us up with player after player having "career" days against us. If we stop that against a shooting team like Davidson we might get something done on the road.

So that would put the final score at about 81-64. All bets are off on a road game but I would think we can put up more than 64.

So, to watch UNCW we would have to stream ESPN+ and stream FloSports. This is getting out of hand.

Sounds like we need someone that knows how to start a write in campaign to petition against this crap. And it needs to include all CAA fans.
