UT/Highway Patrol To Break Ground For Building
The University of Toledo and Ohio State Highway Patrol have partnered together to build a new shared police facility on the southwest corner of Dorr Street and Secor Road to increase public safety and serve the community. Leaders will break ground on the $6.5 million project Friday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m.

The Safety Center, which will be located on vacant land owned by the University across the street from campus, is expected to be completed in December 2020. It will replace the UToledo Police Department offices in the Transportation Center and the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s post on Airport Highway near Swanton.

The combined facility will have separate spaces for each department, but the agencies will share some areas, such as training rooms, interview rooms and in-custody processing space.

Wow, no kidding? The old post out Airport Hwy has been there for a long time, I'm sure they can use updated facilities. I don't know, to me it makes more sense to have it where they have shorter access to 475 and 80/90, like Holland or Maumee, and there's plenty of property out there. I suppose the increased police presence will increase safety around UT, though. There was a story on the ch. 13 this morning talking about how many break-ins and cars have been stolen at UT lately. Increased police presence can't hurt.

They are building new access ramps on Dorr St about a mile away for 475. It will be farther to 80/90 though.

I find it odd that the Ohio State Highway Patrol would have a facility in the middle of Toledo, but perhaps increased police presence from there to I1475 is one advantage. As to addressing car break-ins and stolen vehicles since OSHP does not patrol on campus so I don't see that as advantage, but shared resources and facilities, and cost share are always beneficial

there is a state highway patrol car on Monroe Street (OH-51) on weekend nights all the time.

They could have built it in the end zone of the Glass Bowl, since the Rockets only use that about 15 minutes per game.

This was the perfect marriage of two cash-strapped agencies who needed new facilities. Also, both agencies are deputized throughout the state, so it's a pretty good match...I love the move, because that UT Foundation land is finally getting used AND we can start dumping the buildings in the middle of campus which shouldn't really be there...albeit for two more facilities which shouldn't be on a budget emergency campus with minimal space for expansion either. At least the North Engineering full renovation is underway too, t-minus 7 years to Palmer coming down.

I was referring to issue of stolen or broken in cars parked on campus - where OSHP does not patrol

OH I get all the cost savings and benefits, just thought it was odd to have OSHP located so far from the Interstate
