Article also points out that the Tide actually had 13 players on the field when the officials called the penalty, so they still would have had 12 out there even if the officials had waited for the 13th to scramble off the field before the snap.

It's a much more clever version of the "are they going to punt or go for the first down" trick that the Giants used to dupe the Broncos way back in Super Bowl XXI.

You could put together a "greatest play calls of all time" just from Gus Malzahn. Hats off, Gus - we are not worthy!

Read that the other day. My favorite was hide the midget which AState used in the GoDaddy Bowl after Gus left for Auburn but they had worked on it all year.

Gus would stop a random player and give them situations. Hey, it's 3rd and 4 at own 37, we are down 3 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, we are on the left hash. What do I call there?

The player would then have to give him a play call and Gus would dissect what was good about their choice and what was bad about their choice.

I expect some of his former players will end up being good coaches. His QB at AState (spent two years under Freeze as well) is OC at North Alabama.
