Charlie Smith in the 80’s was one of my all time favorite Monarchs.

I enjoyed watching Charlie play as well. When I saw this new addition I immediately thought of the former Charlie Smith playing at ODU.

My favorite Smith to play for ODU was Frank.

Wood and JJ and staff need to go, if the new president wants ODU on any kind of map moving forward! I forgive Wood for signing JJ, but not for giving him a 5 year extension just because hi was winning 20 games in a weak league and OOC. Freeman (transfer) got us to the NIT semis, outside of that JJ was out of his league. Now us poor old fans, have to deal with mediocre or below until JJ decides to retire. Roy Williams was 70, when he know the game was no more fun. I hope the next BB coach is not up to Wood Selig. JJ was 10-21 the year Wood picked him to take us to the promise land. American does not play in a large league and basketball is not that important. I feel sure 18 years there, they were content. With the largest fan base in the C-USA 8k, our fans deserve better. At this point I don't think ODU could go to a higher league or get a good coach.

JJ gets credit for signing Freeman when the truth is JJ didn't want Freeman! Freeman came to him and asked to play for ODU so he could be close to his ill grandmother. JJ did not agree at first but was persuaded later by his coaches. So without Freeman whar good recruits has JJ gotten us?

And Michael Jordan got cut from his junior HS team. What's your point? Maybe the Freeman who came to ODU initially wasn't the kid who worked his ass off to get better until he became the player he had the potential to be. Maybe if the other kids on this team -- and 90%of the teams in the country -- worked as hard on his game as Freeman did, the game would be a lot better.

In other words, for the learning impaired on here, who you are at 18 or 19 doesn't have to be who you become at 20 or 21.

Joe Reese supposedly worked his ass off last summer. in ATL Did anyone notice any real improvement? Me, neither.

Interesting take on recruiting from Malik and what these coaches are saying/looking at doing with guard play.

Georgia: “Their message was that they want to see me get better and they will be playing more guards at the same time. They want to play two-three guards at a time and they were just telling me how it's a great opportunity there and if I'm interested. We mostly talked about me and the opportunity that's presented. Coach was also telling me how he's from Chester and I'm from Delaware so we have similar ties. He's been watching me since AAU and just loves my game.”

Mississippi State: “The assistant coach called me and we were joking around. He was really cool and I spoke to him for the first time yesterday. His message was how they let their guards rock. Basically they don't have a true point guard and one of their true point guards entered the portal so they need a guy to come in there to control the pace and do what I do.”

When is the signing period in April? Do we have grants? Saint Thomas looks like a good three!

I agree. And I think I read something today or yesterday that the NCAA just passed a ruling for next year that will make it even worse?

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2021
So I was thinking about this whole transfer mess, and the fact that players want to be paid, and came up with a solution that the folks in academia are too soft to even consider, but I think would be fair. Players want to be paid, and argue that coaches can leave without being penalized, so players should be able to do the same, then lets treat them like coaches. Players sign a contract to play for 4 years in order to receive their pay. I hope the NBA and P5s enjoy paying buyouts.

Fabulous Idea, it will never happen. And it would push all the one and done guys to the D-League or G-League, what ever they are calling it these days. So if a player wanted to transfer college could buy the contract from the other school, or perhaps put together a player trade? That would be just like pro-sports. I can see a down side to this as contracts balloon like in baseball and football. Imagine the outcry when some SEC or Big 12 school pays some point guard a million bucks to play for them

It would happen too. To me, the real answer is make the D-league a more desirable spot. College athletes need to recognize that they are getting a great experience, free college, free room and board, great coaching and medical care, and even a decent stipend. Thats a great deal tons of kids should be thrilled to have. If you dont want that, its OK. Go to the D league and get paid to play. It should be more like college baseball IMO. A player can sign with a team and go minor league right out of high school, OR go to college. Either way is a good pathway to MLB, just choose the path you prefer. The other thing is the NBA needs to start taking kids out of HS again. If they are good enough, let em play. If not, then dont.

Wow. Its like the NCAA is actually trying to kill college basketball. Talk about eating the goose that lays the golden eggs. Ive been a college basketball fan a long time. I love it. Ive made some of my best friends and have some of my best memories directly by being a Monarch fan. But man, this is the kind of stuff that will make you want to give up and lose interest. Such a shame they cant see what they are doing.

Don't get me wrong, I think all of this is stupid, but this is the road they are headed down. Personally, I think the NCAA dropped the ball when all of the players' rights discussions started. They should have held their position that their mission is that of an educational institution, and that they provide great value to kids in the form of a scholarship. They should have also admitted that they have failed at that mission in many cases, but will be creating a commission to redirect the NCAA and its affiliates to ensure that they are delivering on their educational mission for all students including student athletes. The commission then should have found that academic standards for both incoming student athletes and current student athletes have been inadequate and must me raised to a minimum level that ensure any athletes being admitted to a university are able to compete academically as well as athletically.

The problem with arguing that the scholarship is a great value in the real world that we currently live in, is that many universities have all but removed academics from the expectations for athletes, therefor athletes do not respect the institution or the scholarship, which ultimately leads them to feeling that they are being taken advantage of, because they are, but the answer to not taking advantage of these kids is not paying them, it is fulfilling the university's duty to educate them.

Will this lead to some kids skipping college, or failing to be accepted? Of course it will. Will it lead to some students taking their academics more seriously before college and while in college? Absolutely. Will college basketball lose some top players? Definitely. Will that hurt college sports? No. It will improve them.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2021
The NCAA doesn't really have the power. They are going with the sentiment of America's most powerful athletics departments to remain in power. But they really do not control this. If ESPN decides to collude with 60 or so presidents like they did for football, the NCAA would have two choices: hold firm on old school principles and have your tournament become the NIT or roll with that TV money.

These changes are reactions, not leadership. I read people on here talking about 4 year players at ODU and often wonder whether folks really know where this is all going. In a few years, I'd wager that as many players are playing at 2+ universities as there are players doing the ole 4 year/possible redshirt deal. Guess we'll see if that affects these rabid crowds that folks seem to be reminiscing about.

When that happens, the non-p5 will just be the minor league for the P5. It will be time to have two tournaments anyway. Otherwise its like the Tides thinking they can compete for a world series.

Solid content, but ****** grammar. Did you pass the exit writing exam?
