What is "our level", and whatever you perceive it to be, is it supposed to be our ceiling? When we play teams above "our level" are we supposed to be willing to be crushed by them because we accepted less.

In reference to the Maury kid ... maybe he will grow some into a more natural PF, maybe he will develop more of a SF skill set and be a good hybrid forward, or maybe he will use his size and quickness successfully against bigger power forwards to be successful at the position - assuming he can defend them at the other end which will likely be the greater issue.

Our level is G5 and hoping to win CUSA and get a tourney bid. You can't compete for recruits that are 6-10 and worth a damn (without significant development). The teams that are most successful take the undersize 6-5 power forward that is a baller but larger programs didn't want.

When is the last time that ODU had a successful team while starting a 6'-5" power forward?

Last year. And I dont know that Brandon stith was much of 6-5 (if any) despite what he was listed at.

We already have Alfies as our mini-PF. Why do we need another?

I remember Kris Jenkins game winning 3 for Nova as an undersized "PF" (whatever that position is anymore).

Joe Bunn was one of the best forwards in program history. He played PF and was 6’5 on his tip toes. First team all conference. Only had him for a couple years because of off the court issues. That guy could of played for anyone. Remember him scoring 30 points multiple times. College basketball has a huge history of undersized big men, even at the Power Five level.

Yes. Great player. Arguably the biggest shot in the history of college basketball.

Mario Mullen was another beast at 6-5. Would have been even better had he not struggled with back issues.

RE: Men's Basketball Recruiting: 2020
Joe Bunn and Mario Mullen were more than 20 years ago, and Mario played on teams with Petey and Odell.

Guys like Barkley and Adrian Dantley were from big conference schools.

You (Giles) don't get to resize people by making them bigger or in this case smaller, to fit your argument. Brandan was listed at 6'-7" so that is what we will call him.

As someone else stated earlier ... we already have Pilavios (sp.) at the PF, do we need another undersized guy to put up against another team's 6'-8" (or taller) PF?

For the record, I'm not against taking this guy from Maury. Just don't want to have to count on him going forward as our starter at PF. If he somehow overcomes his physical limitations to star there then that would be fine with me.

Signing period for basketball, is in November. Lets get back to recruiting and stop comparing previous players. This is a recruiting topic, not who can play PF @ 6'5 or 6'6 or 6'7.

Do you actually believe what they have listed? I've been around the Stiths, I'm not resizing anything. You don't believe Carver is really 6-7, do you?

You are also assuming the teams we are playing have PFs that are 6-8.

As long as they are all lying the same amount what difference does it make? If this kid says he's 6-6 then he's probably 6-4. Which would be undersized, but as others have pointed out, there have been plenty of undersized guys that are successful ballers. If he has talent, bring him in.

Why is it soo hard for people to grasp the fact that basketball shoes have soles on them that are at least 1 1/2 inches thick. A lot of the time the program heights and weights are actually legit. Basketball measurements are taken with full uniform on. Obviously they are going to round up.
Someone on this board last year was saying that we are soo much smaller than our opponents because we fudge the heights. Yet we listed Trey Porter at 6”10 and at Nevada he was 6’ 11. Lol. I just think it’s funny. If u can play, then u can play. Period. There are endless examples of good forwards in college basketball 6’4 to 6’7.

Thats really the bottom line. Height means almost nothing. I know in Brandons instance, he has a ridiculous wingspan.

LOL. It either means noting or it means something. "Almost nothing" implies the latter.

Do you think the guys that are routinely recruited to play the 4 & 5 positions at schools like UNC, Duke, Kentucky, etc. just happen to be TALL? Seems if it meant "almost nothing" then they would have more short guys in there since they are obviously a lot easier to find. But hey, what do their coaches know about basketball? Or is it that they are all really just 6'-5" and their schools are lying about them being 6'-8", 6'-9", 6'-10", etc.?

Brandan did have a long wingspan. As a senior he also lost his starting position at center to a bigger/taller player.
