Shelby legislators team up to protect Wiseman from NCAA ruling

Two Shelby County lawmakers are out to defend embattled University of Memphis star James Wiseman from the NCAA’s move to keep him from playing for the Tigers.

State Rep. Antonio Parkinson and state Sen. Brian Kelsey, who have already filed legislation enabling college athletes to be paid, are rewriting the bill to deal with the NCAA’s about-face on Wiseman.

“These donations are not worth appeasing an organization that does nothing but take down banners from our rafters. The Tennessee legislature supports our college athletes, our coaches, and our state universities. If the NCAA doesn’t correct this injustice by January, we’ll do it for them,” Parkinson, a Memphis Democrat, said in a series of tweets Tuesday morning.

This is neither pandering or grandstanding. I'd much rather my elected officials look into the inequities and arbitrary nature of a huge org like the NCAA - with their lack of accountability and obfuscation - than waste time with their petty political bickering. We elect them to represent us. We need representing when it comes to the NCAA - both in this case and in football equity.
