Will be interesting to see how NMSU does in Tucson.
I went to the Arizona-Illinois game Sunday - Arizona is loaded. Nico Mannion is a special player - best frosh point guard I have seen in decades,

RE: WAC Basketball week 2
If NMSU is going to make the Arizona game interesting, Jans will need the services of Terrell Brown and Ivan Aurrecoechea. And, even that might not be enough. I’m not sure NMSU has anyone at the point who can defend Mannion. At least with AJ Harris’ speed, Mannion would have had difficulty staying in front of him. Shunn Buchanan isn’t nearly as athletic as Harris. And, Jabari Rice hasn’t developed the ball handling or court vision of a point guard just yet. Buchanan will need to be a good game manager if NMSU is to have a chance at an upset.

I watched the Illinois game on the Pac-12 Network. He looked great. There was a lot of hype about him and it was well deserved. He is a definitely a lottery pick when he decides to come out. He had 23 points and nine assists. He had a nice looking jump shot off the dribble, was smooth going to the basketball, saw the floor, and looks like he has a mid-range game. He is a better player than his Dad, Pace Mannion.
Pace Mannion played at Utah on the Danny Vranes and Tom Chambers team and was a 2nd round pick of the Warriors and played in the NBA for a number of teams. I saw that Utah team play in the NCAA Tournament in El Paso against Northeastern in 1981. Pace was All-WAC in 1983, when the WAC was really good.

RE: WAC Basketball week 2
After Week 1 my projections are:
NMSU-WAC still has little parity. It will be how good of seed NMSU can get.
Big Gap
Cal Bapitst
Smaller Gap
GCU, CSUB, Seattle, UMKC-Going to be quite the battle and very even in this group
Little Gap
UVU
UTRGV
Huge Gap
Chicago St. They will win games this year
UMKC has their best player since joining the WAC I believe and will compete for all newcomer. Still early but thats my projections

Halftime in Austin, TX. Texas up 4 over CBU, 26-22. Texas shooting 10-35 overall, 2-16 from 3. Lancers hanging tough despite 13 turnovers.

Watching UVU play Ottawa (NAIA). Right now it is tied at 33 with 5 minutes left in first half. UVU seems confused on offense. Hopefully, they settle down and pull away in the second half.

Oh man... playing Texas brings back ugly memories for Lopes fans. We got spanked us by nearly 40 I think. I remember we gave up more three pointers to them than we ever have in our history. 15 I think.
Hope the lancers pull off the upset and shock the world!

Texas wins 67-54. It was 50-47 with 7 minutes to go, but the Longhorns went on a run and closed it out. Acquaah with 17, Flavors 14. Notable, CBU was 6-16 from the line.

NMSU now behind by 12 with 3:30 left. Hope they are able to pull off another miracle like they did last year at CSUB. Go Aggies!

101-70. The second half had lots of nice shots suitable for replays. But they let an NAIA team have 70 points and 7 steals.

That's a much better result. I stopped watching at halftime. Glad they played a better second half.

I think you're right. Wow! Looks like the WAC may take several steps back this year.

That's how it is some years. A whole conference can struggle. If this keeps up, conference race could be tight, but brutal.

A horrible start for the WAC. It is only one week, but the WAC is ranked last by RPI in the country. CBU has the best RPI in the conference with 113. Unfortunately, CBU cannot represent the WAC in the NCAA tournament. They can in the NIT. So, NMSU needs to get healthy and get going. Very disappointing starts for GCU and Seattle. Don't think the WAC will have to worry about these two schools jumping to another conference. Who would want them?

I agree with you about the disappointing RPI for the conference. It’s a poor start and I don’t think it’s truly representative of what our conference can typically bring to the table.
I also agree that GCU has had a poor start and that they don’t look like a power house team in the slightest. I’d also reiterate that whenever conference realignment comes up, university administration has consistently said that they’re committed to the WAC. That being said, isn’t saying “who would want them?” based on a bad loss to a lower team and a respectable showing against a Big 10 school a bit harsh?
Conferences would hopefully take a holistic view of a school’s potential value add. The school is dedicated to building competitive programs that can compete with anyone and they’re sparing no expense. GCU is successful in other sports in addition to basketball. They’ve also had a few consecutive 20 win seasons. Yes, several of those are against cupcake schools... I get it. Still though, despite bad losses to NMSU in the tourney final the last two years, it’s hard to say the back to back second place team in the conference is in a “who would want them?” place.
I’m not trying to convince you of the goodness of our tasty purple kool aid. I would point out that CBU was pretty open about how they were following GCU’s model for transitioning and building a culture of excitement. The fact is that many programs wish they had the level of success, enthusiasm, and fun our program brings to the table. Right now, we are in the WAC and are happy to be there. We need to beat the Aggies a few more times to prove we can be consistently competitive in a tougher conference. When the time comes, I think another school would find us an attractive partner institution .
Are you sure you don’t want some purple kool aid? It’s good...

CBU cannot represent in the NIT. Only CBI and CIT
