Gavitt Tipoff Games
Thought I'd start a thread for this as I watch the surprise performance of DePaul over Iowa. 78-53 right now.

If this is the worst team in the Big East, this is going to be a monster conference this year.

Aaaannnnd, DePaul pulls off the win. 93-78.

DePaul has some real honest-to-goodness players this year. I feel like they could have used one more real scorer on the wing, but they're not a bad team.

Way to go, DePaul! They have really turned things around. This isn't your doormat DePaul anymore.

I thought the Blue Demons relied a tad too much on Max Strus last year. This year's team might be a bit more balanced and offer a tad more depth. But it's way too early to tell how much better DePaul will be this season compared to last (I hope at least somewhat better).

Relied on him out of necessity. Coleman-Lands was hurt and no charlie moore, romeo weems, darious hall or markese jacobs. those are huge additions.

RE: Gavitt Tipoff Games
wait what? I was out all night tonight. Wasn't it 53-50 at halftime? If it was 78-53, that would be a 25-3 run to start the 2nd half???

Wow.

Wow.

I believe it was something like 53-30 at halftime. You'd be forgiven for just not processing a blowout in favor of the blue demons though - I did the same thing. Got home most of the way through the first half, flipped the game on to check the score, and just went "goddamnit DePaul" when I saw something like 44-21 at the bottom of the screen. Took me a good ten seconds to process that DePaul was the team winning.

DePaul also started the game on a 10-0 run. It was a blowout from start to finish.

I caught it right about the same time. I did a "wait, what?" then just started laughing.

Big picture, and purely for just men's basketball, adding Rutgers and Nebraska - to go along with Penn State and Northwestern - essentially means that the bottom four programs of the B1G are historically very poor.

Since 1980, nearly 40 years, those four programs have a combined 15 NCAA Tournament appearances. If any of the "traditional" top-half teams of the B1G are rebuilding or undergoing a transition, it is very easy for that bottom to expand to include five, maybe even six teams.

RE: Gavitt Tipoff Games
The Big Ten strongly needs six of these eight to be Top 25-30-esque every year:

Illinois
Indiana
Maryland
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Purdue
Wisconsin

The other six simply don't seem to offer (at least as I see it) the fan bases, recruiting draws, histories, ability to compete with the aforementioned eight, etc. to be strong year in and year out. Maybe I'm wrong.

So if only, say, four or five of the B10 "power eight" are "Top 30 good" any given year ... the league has problems.

Of note, Sagarin Ratings has B10 sixth in league rankings. Not good. Of course, take Sagarin with a bit of skepticism as it has Georgetown No. 166 (way too low).

Ken Pom has the Big Ten 4th right now and closer to #5 SEC than they are #3 ACC.

RE: Gavitt Tipoff Games
From the parts of the Creighton game I caught, it seemed they were pretty evenly matched with Michigan.

Not Gavitt related, but Xavier trying to pull out the win in OT against Missouri right now. They looked real sloppy in the second half. Rushed their shots and didn't look to kick it out much when nothing was happening in the lane.
