Kent State @ Towson
The Flashes travel to Maryland to take on the 2-0 Towson Tigers this evening. Really, Townson is 1-0 with a 14 point victory over George Washington under their belts. They also beat CVCA's JV team, but that shouldn't count as a win.

The Tigers were 10-22 last season but seem to have a lot of new faces this year. A pair of freshman, 6'1 guard Jason Gibson and 6'7 wing Charles Thompson are among the newcomers who are off to a good start. Thompson was in the starting lineup against GW and played 25 minutes while Gibson put up 11 in 27 minutes against the Colonials.

This one seems like a nice early season test for the Flashes. I'll take the good guys and give burden 11...

The one preview I read said they are one of the more experienced teams in the CAA with 4 starters and 8 of their top 9 scorers retuning. They have a projected 1st team all-conference player--2nd team last year. While they are projected between 4th and 6th, they have the advantage of the rest of the middle of the league probably falling off. They are well behind the two teams expected to fight for the title--Northeastern and Charleston.

I am listening on IHeart Radio as I didn't want to pay $12.50 to watch when I will be distracted the entire game anyway!

I have some breaking news for everyone... Troy Simons can shoot.

Also, the halftime guy and the home PA guy please take note his name is spelled with one M not two. That's Sy-mons, not Sim-ons.

He had to redshirt due to transfer, only has 1 year of eligibility left. He is a major addition.

Impressive to force a tie in the last 30 seconds then win in OT on the road against an experienced team. There are some players on this team that can score.

Missed last 5-6 minutes of regulation and all of OT by the Play-by-play. Did he get hurt on the dunk???

Missed a ton of practice last year due to injury as I recall.

Both KSU radio and the TV announcers said Simons had a cramp. "A really, really bad cramp," Ty said.

To win with him on the bench down the stretch and Booman fouling out is really impressive.

Nice early season road win. The experience will be very valuable. Sounded like Santiago and Bainbridge were on the court a lot down the stretch and in OT. Nice to hear freshman stepping up. I know it's early but it really looks like Roberts has taken a significant jump. Sounded like another great effort from DP too.

Lastly shout out to Ty. I don't listen to many games any more with streaming options readily available. Didn't realize he's announcing by himself. Gotta be tough to have to talk non-stop especially for a face paced sport. Didn't have many plays spoiled for me by crowd reactions, so he was clearly keeping up.

Towson fan message board

Some interesting comments after the game Monday.

Quote:Great game by the way. Well-played by both teams in terms of being a pretty clean game. You can say PS can't win close games the last two seasons, but last season, this team would have lost this game by 20 to a team that was as good as Kent State. They were the better team and still needed overtime to beat us.

Quote:But Pippen and Whittington are legit. Whittington was preseason All-MAC and Pippen had five blocks and probably altered 5-7 shots. He was the best player on the floor IMO.

Quote:I’m not sure we’re going to face a lot of teams in the CAA that are better than Kent State.

Towson Coach Skerry:
Quote:On Pippen

He had good numbers. Hard cover because he puts it down. He made a tough shot on Dennis going left. They were good. We tried to schedule aggressively. I thought they were good enough to win our league. We could be if we get healthy and stay healthy.

Ty does a great job. He has worked very hard to improve his craft and it shows. Agree with shoutout. Pleasure to have him at the mike

College basketball writer Patrick Stevens, who was covering the game, tweeted this during the first half:

Quote:Definitely will be tuning in for some Friday night #MACtion when Kent State is involved. Fun team. Danny Pippen has only three points but he's been an absolute menace on defense.

Towson is tied with #15 Florida at the half, 30-30. I don't know what will happen in the second half. but I don't think Senderoff was just blowing smoke about Towson being a solid team.
