My feelings on Ridder are clear (if not i'm squarely in the #freebenbryant camp) and having Ridder as a passer hurt all of the passing games productivity. i am salivating at the thought of Deguara catching passes from Rodgers.
Well, I certainly agree that Ridder is no Aaron Rodgers LOL. Some of the "hate" goes back to the Pack taking Jordan Love and the running back from Boston College prior to Josiah. Packers Nation wanted a legit wide receiver to help Rodgers stretch the field in the passing game. I think why this pick makes so much sense for the Packers and for Josiah is his skill set plays strongly in their scheme and how they want to use him. We know [and the Packers know] that Josiah can catch the ball and get open in space. His positional versatility and the fact that he's a hard worker doing the "dirty work" to help his team in any way he can translates well to the NFL.
i get it. it's a blanket statement on rounds 1-3 and i think everyone was scratching their head about the Jordan Love pick. You can make the argument that they are over-drafting the picks (i tend to feel that way about RBs in general at almost any pick) but if you really like a player you go out and get them and hope they produce at a level that justifies the "reach." The fact that Josiah (and maybe AJ Dillon) are likely going to start on ST right away offers some ROI right off the bat (did Dillon do that at BC?); but if Deguara ends up being an average starter for them, that probably justifies the pick, imo.

CBS Sports guy did not like the pick either. Probably did not watch to much of him to be honest.
94. Packers: TE Josiah Deguara, Cincinnati
Grade: C-. Hard-working H-back type who had flashes of athleticism as a receiver. Some blocking prowess. But nothing spectacular about his game.

Hell yea, good job Jo. I was sctually hoping the Bengals would take him with their 4th round pick. JD is basically a high level glue guy/role player who will be a beast on ST, can block, great hands, athletic. Yes he lacks a few inches from being an elite TE but I think he will nake a solid career similar to Brent Celek.

Celek and Kelce had Super Bowl rings. Let's hope JD joins the UC tight end ring club.

Personally, I thought he was a late 4th round or high 5th round talent.
I think he does have a very good shot to be a good contributor on special teams and catch 20-25 passes and be a helluva blocking T.E. while having a 5+ year career.
I wish him good luck as I enjoyed the energy and passion he played with.

Celek and Kelce top the list (Rod Monroe, Adrien Robinson and Blake Annen all had a cup of coffee in the NFL). So who is next?

JD is projected to get a $867K signing bonus and a total contract value of $4,182,000
Nice start in life.
Burrows gets $23,880,000 to sign and contract value $36,190,000

It's a win on many levels for Deguara and for UC. Deguara gets a great pay day and immediate motivation from people doubting his value at the pick. UC gets to tout their continued ability to develop Tight Ends, which is a position that seems so valuable in recruiting because of the ability for move guys around (see Barwin, Conner).

Josiah Deguara
I can't fathom how escatic Deguara must've been to field that call. He was projected to go in the 5th-7th rounds and was instead the third TE off the board. Instead of fighting for a roster position this off-season he may end up fighting for a starting positon. A potentially integral part of Aaron Rodgers last go.
Crazy how much changed in one day.

If nothing else, listen to the 9:00 minute mark and what Kelce has to say about Fickell. This coach is connecting to former players in a way that no one before him did. Incredible.

RE: Josiah Deguara
Was trying to find the Banter comment about the UCLA hustle play:
Quote:GREEN BAY — NFL head coaches are always looking for motivational tools. And if they can use audio/video components, all the better.
From movie clips to inspirational speeches to hype videos to stoke-the-fire highlights delivered by other fellow athletes, they’ll try just about anything.
But there can’t have been many times in NFL history where a coach found a snippet of film from a college game, used it in an effort to teach his players a lesson about persistence … and then wound up having that player on his roster a few months later.
That’s exactly the case with Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur and rookie third-round pick Josiah Deguara, the University of Cincinnati tight end/fullback/H-back who before he was a Packers draft choice was a teaching tool in a video clip.
The play, from the Bearcats’ 24-14 season-opening victory over UCLA last August, showed Deguara chasing down Bruins defensive back Jay Shaw just before halftime to prevent a potential 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Deguara, who caught four passes for 53 yards and the game’s first touchdown that night, came at an angle from the opposite side of the field to chase down Shaw at Cincinnati’s 33-yard line.
“We actually showed this to our team — ironically enough — last season in a team meeting when we were talking about effort and grit,” LaFleur recounted after general manager Brian Gutekunst selected Deguara with the 94th overall pick in last week’s draft — even though scouts from multiple other teams said they had him graded as a Day 3 prospect at best. “There was a play versus UCLA where there was an interception, and just the effort he displayed to run down the defender and make an unbelievable play on the ball, I think it really epitomizes who he is as a football player.”

Great article.
But you'd think they could find a higher quality video of Deguara's toudhdown-saving tackle.
