Josiah has "quietly" been having a really good year. In addition to being a weapon in the passing game, he hustles, doesn't hurt the team with mistakes, and just seems to be a high character guy who leads by example. I was thinking that if he finishes the year strong and healthy he has to be an NFL draft prospect. For the sake of comparison, I looked at the senior year's of Josiah and Travis Kelce...

JD
9 G
28 REC
414 YDS
14.8 AVG
7 TD

TK
13 G
45 REC
722 YDS
16.0 AVG
8 TD

With three games remaining in the regular season and potentially the AAC chip game and a bowl game, Josiah is trending to an equal or better senior year than Kelce's. The question is can Josiah take his game to the next level like Travis did? JD is a few inches shorter and probably a hair slower in speed than TK but he runs great routes and has good hands. His hustle plays and high football IQ would also appeal to NFL teams. I'm just thankful he's having a great year because the team has needed him to make plays and so far he's done just that.

So the answer to the first question is no. Travis Kelce is a physical freak who only dropped because of some character concerns. The only thing they have in common is the school they went to.

Can he make it in the league? I don't know. He's a good pass catcher and good effort guy but he appears small to me. My answer would be mostly based on his size speed combo. If he doesn't measure out bigger than a WR he doesn't appear to have the athleticism to make up for that. In that case I'd consider him a good college player who's not a pro prospect. If his measurements are better than my eyes think they are he's got a chance.

He’s probably undersized for the NFL at that position but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t make a roster and stick around to open some eyes.

RE: Josiah Deguara
Game stats are great but it'll come down to his size and speed. Kelce is big and fast at 6'5" 260 lbs and a 4.63 forty at the NFL combine. Those are prototype NFL numbers.

By comparison Tyler Eifert ran a 4.68 and Zach Ertz ran a 4.76 and both of those guys are at least 6'5".

JD is having a great season and should be commended. That being said, a big reason why his numbers could potentially eclipse TK is due to the fact UC had Kenbrell Thompkins, Anthony McClung, Damon Julian and even RDAIV to throw to (before TT ruined RDAIV up the middle, he was very effective under BJ as a receiving threat). If anything TK was probably underutilized at UC.

I definitely think there is a place for JD in the NFL, I just don't see him being the mega star that TK is. Hopefully he doesn't get picked up by the Bengals and has an enjoyable NFL career.

I think Deguara has a shot in the league. No doubt someone will pick him up if he's an undrafted free agent and once he has a chance to compete on the practice field, I think he's a guy who will stick on the roster.

Purdue had a tweener TE/WR that made the Jets roster, Dustin Keller, played 4 years then had an injury.
Similar profile to Josiah.

Just to emphasize because I'm not sure how closely everyone here follows NFL football but this is completely correct. Travis Kelce was first team All Pro last year; meaning the #1 person in the league at his position. He's the only TE in the league this year in the top 20 of receiving yard and he's in the top 10. If KC is the annual competitor that they should be under Mahomes he's going to be a Hall of Famer.

If Deguara makes it it's not going to be as a big time player; it's likely going to be on special teams mostly. The TEs who end up being stars are physical freaks.

Bolded, not to hijack this thread but I was thinking of RDAIV at the game Saturday. Seems he was collateral damage from the Tubs years which is a shame because he had a fine Bearcat career and used properly would be remembered as a great one. And a Bearcat with such an amazing family legacy too.

Oh well, the Tubs years are way back in the rearview mirror these days. And I agree that JD is a great college player but I'm uncertain at this point how that might translate to a career on Sundays. Let's hope so.

Ralph had 366 yards rushing for 3 TDs, 28 catches for 344 yards for 4 TDs that year, so 707 yards from scrimmage and 7 TDs. Throw in his 801 yards on kickoff and he was superb that year.

Do we know what DeGuara's 40 time is? How is he rated as a blocker? i think with some time to bulk up and improve is speed numbers he'll have a shot. Maybe he latches on to special teams at first but i know the coaching staff will probably ride pretty hard for him as they should.

Definitely think he has a shot. Hell, the bengals drafted a TE in the 2nd round that had like 5 touchdowns in 4 years of playing time.

Travis Kelce: I've never been more confident that a bearcat would ball out in the league. The duke bowl game where he pulled away from their entire secondary on the long TD.

Bolded, a thing of beauty--definitely merits a visit to YouTube for a pick me up on a gray Cincinnati day. One of my favorite plays, all time, in Bearcat football.

There's straight up 40 time and there's game film. His straight up 40 is probably nothing that stands out but the plays he makes - the UCLA interception run down the sideline tackle - should get some notice. Here's an article from October about his NFL status...

Quote:The Bearcats are off to a 4-1 start and a 24th national ranking, and Deguara has played a crucial role in their hot start. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound redshirt senior has hauled in 17 catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

That stat line might seem modest, but it’s good for a college tight end up to this point. His production tops that of Jared Pinkney and Brycen Hopkins, two players that have garnered early-round talk this season. He doesn’t have quite the upside of those two, but he has intriguing traits and has a NFL future.

Deguara possesses good quickness coming off the snap and he can produce both in-line, from the slot and split out wide. He has the speed to create mismatches against linebackers and the ability to create separation coming out of his breaks.

He doesn’t run the full route tree (mostly flat outs, slants, corners) but he finds a lot of success on posts. Deguara has the fluidity to further develop his route running savvy, but he already displays the awareness to reroute vertical when he spots an opening in the back-end.

Where he struggles is as a blocker, and he will need to develop in this area before he can be relied upon at the next level. Deguara flashes adequate ability and he’s an effective chipper and down-blocker, but his initial punch is wide and he struggles to consistently win one-on-one.

He very well could be a Mackey Award finalist, but it’s tough to project exactly where Deguara fits into this loaded senior tight end NFL draft class.

It would be great to see Deguara get a chance to compete during Senior Bowl week, and Director Jim Nagy is already thinking outside of the box to find a way to get him into the game.

While Deguara’s blocking is still coming along, it will be interesting to see if he can make that transition at the next level.

He’s a talented prospect that is certainly worth watching, and he looks to keep things rolling this weekend against Houston.

Will any of our tight ends next year come close to replacing Dequara as a threat in the receiving game. Who might step up Taylor, Whyle, Labelle or will it be tight end by committee?

Don’t forget Huber. I think it will be by committee. Labelle and Huber are more blocking TE, while the other two have the athleticism to flex out and do some other things. Thankfully we get McClellans back next year so I expect we’ll see the RB’s be used more as that outlet valve in the passing game.

Based on this, Deguara might be undersized for an NFL tight end.
Average NFL TE: 6' 4.54" 254.3 lbs
Deguara: 6' 3" 240 lbs

Colleges often exaggerate players' height, especially for tight ends. Here are the last 3 Bearcats tight ends who went to the NFL:

Travis Kelce today: 6'5" 260 lb
Travis Kelce UC (2012): 6'6" 260 lb
Adrien Robinson NFL: 6'4" 264 lb
Adrien Robinson UC (2011): 6'5" 267 lb
Blake Annen NFL: 6'5" 250 lb
Blake Annen UC (2013): 6'5" 247 lb

And here are the 4 tight ends who were picked in the first 2 rounds of the 2019 NFL draft:
T.J. Hockenson, NFL: 6'5" 247 lb
T.J. Hockenson, Iowa: 6'5" 243 lb
Noah Fant, NFL: 6'4" 249 lb
Noah Fant, Iowa: 6'5" 232 lb (yes, Iowa had 2 tight ends picked in the first round!)
Irv Smith Jr, NFL: 6'2" 242 lb
Irv Smith Jr, Alabama: 6'4" 246 lb
Drew Sample, NFL: 6'4" 258 lb
Drew Sample, U of Washington: 6'5" 259 lb

Thanks for the comps. That's my concern is if he comes in at 6'2 225 he's WR sized without WR athleticism. If he's going to get drafted his measurables need to be pretty close to listed.
