Only Charlotte and ODU have 0 games scheduled versus non-D1
USM 4, MTSU-FIU, UTEP, UTSA all with 3
28 games vs non-D1, when those same games could be played versus low-majors helping the conference, no surprise the D1s are 6-0 so far

Solid job by only the 49ers and the Monarchs

Oh boy, the peeps on the CUSA board are gonna love to see THIS!

The big issue CUSA has right now isn't the non-D1 games (which I've long been on record should be excised from our schools' OOC schedules except in unique or unavoidable circumstances [and no D3, NAIA or sub-NAIA games, period)]. It's that there's very few strong or even respectable D1 wins. UTSA was supposed to be a CUSA contender, and maybe they will be, but they've lost to Southern Illinois (picked last in the MVC), Oakland (middle of the Horizon) and Delaware (middle of the CAA). The biggest win is, what, Rice over Penn? Middle Tennessee over Lipscomb? As much as I hate non-D1 games, CUSA schools can lose them all and it won't affect their NET. Losing to mid-pack mid-majors is the real kick to the basketballs.

We can't be worried about how other teams schedule. How about we drop off our agreements with sub 300 teams and try to add more top 75 (I think that's NET tier 1?) teams before we criticize anyone else's scheduling philosophy?

a) Everyone plays tomato cans. They serve multiple purposes: (usually) an easy win, a chance to rest your starters and give the backups more run, a chance to tinker with the playbook. Every time UMES or someone similar shows up on the schedule, people act as though this is the greatest sin in scheduling history and only ODU would drop to those depth. There isn't a D1 school around* that doesn't have at least one of those games on their schedules, even if they have to host barely accredited schools whose admission office is a van down by the river. It happens. Move on, people.

b) Trying to pick out RPI/NET winners before the season is tricky unless you're scheduling sure-fire programs. Remember when ODU hosted Rhode Island a couple of years ago and that was supposed to be an RPI bonanza? Then their best player blew out his knee, they had other injury issues, their coach was still Dan Hurley, and they finished 17-15 with an RPI in the 120s. Hardly the boost they were expecting. And it's far from the only time that a good game turned average between the signing of the contract and the jumping of the ball.

* -- except for the occasional low-major who play no non-conference games at home, but I doubt anyone here is angling for that, no matter how sexy the OOC SOS looks after.

But we play enough “tomato cans” in conference. We need to load up on tough teams in the OOC to balance it out and survive the rpi hit the bottom of CUSA brings

Even so, you still need an early-season gimmie or two to figure out your lineup, get the new starters some success, work out the offseason rust. Plus losing is a curse that keeps on giving; if you overschedule in the OOC and don't give them the opportunity to have a couple of no-doubt-about-it wins, then they're not going to be in any mental condition to compete in conference.

Everyone plays early-season cans, except those that sell their entire OOC to be the can. This isn't a coincidence.

Should be a limit of ONE non D1 game per season.

A game by WKU was cancelled 17 Dec, leaving 27 non-DI games for C-USA, C-USA went 27-0.
C-USA is 95-80 in all games: however, take out the non-D1s, C-USA is 68-80. Just awful.

Plenty of D-1 tomato cans. If you can't bank on a win against a MEAC team, you're pathetic.

I know we suck this year, but 68-80 is pathetic.

WTH - this bs needs to end after this year. Or, perhaps, we should schedule CNU as a regular season game. No, wait, we have pride - so we’ll keep them as an exhibition game.

OOC performance as a whole, I'd agree. But this is about the topic that makes us the toast of the CUSA board, scheduling non-D1s. And quite frankly, I'd take a loss to JMU over "wins" against Columbia International, Bluefield State and Our Lady of the Lake (unless it's the one that gave Excalibur to Arthur) eight days a week.

That said, if scheduling non-D1s is accepted SOP, and the NCAA won't do anything to fix how non-D1s are factored into metrics (treating them as non-entities, thus making losses to USCAA teams less demeritorious than wins against low-performing D1 teams), then we might as well replace UMES and Fairfield with Virginia State and Virginia Wesleyan, who at least are local/regional with alumni in town.

Agreed. The Commissioner needs to makes this happen, unfortunately I have no faith that she will progress the basketball brand.
