CURRENT D1 RECORD 0-1
CURRENT PLACE IN STANDINGS
Campbell Fighting Camels
The post-Chris Clemons era may not be kind to Campbell, who were picked to finish 7th in the Big South in the pre-season Coaches Poll, but don't tell that to the current squad. The Fighting Camels are off to a nice start in the 2019-20 campaign. Campbell opened their season with a solid 75-74 road win against former Big South foe Coastal Carolina. They then dismantled non-DI opponent Central Pennsylvania, 101-47 in their home opener.
So while we're finally facing a team where we can say we're "punching against our own weight class", it would be easy to see how Campbell might be a road favorite in Tuesday night's clash.
6-4 senior guard
Cory Gensler is the player to watch for Campbell as one of two returning starters. He's off to a solid start this season, averaging 12.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.0 apg and 1.0 bpg. He leads the team in all 4 categories. He's also been very efficient, with no turnovers to his credit and shooting percentages of .474 from the field and .429 from three point range.
The scoring has been balanced for the Camels so far, with 6 players averaging at least 7.0 ppg in the early going. 12 players have received at least 9.5 minutes per contest as Campbell looks to stretch out its bench and see what they have. However, The 5 starters have been the same in each of their first contests, with returning starter and 6-3 junior
Ja'Cor Nelson and 6-1 junior
Jordan Whitfield joining Gensler in the backcourt. The post is manned by a pair of sophomores, 6-6
Cedric Henderson and 6-10 Serbian
Milos Stajcic.
Campbell has been great at avoiding turnovers and forcing them out of their opponents, as Gensler hasn't been the only player contributing to a great A:TO ratio. As a team, Campbell has 41 assists to just 16 turnovers, while their opponents are almost 180 degrees in the opposite direction: Just 17 assists and 37 turnovers. The Fighting Camels have 19 steals compared to just 6 for their opponents. In short, don't expect them to "beat themselves".
Campbell is also shooting .408 from three point range while allowing just .308 perimeter shooting from their opponents. Their only noticeable weakness might be in the post, where Coastal Carolina out-rebounded Campbell 42-31 on November 5th.
