We are in a great game with Pacific. Another great opportunity here. Pacific lost to Oregon State by just 12, Oregon state went and blew out DePaul by 21 the other night. We have been down most of this one but we are hanging around. Quality wins are definitely needed to keep building our profile. Down 1 5 minutes to go

No field goals for final 6.5 minutes until a 2 with 7 seconds left. Rough. Bailey had a really bad game shooting. We did force 20 turnovers but couldnt finish. Had some real good open looks and couldnt hit them. Fell 58-51

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
Very poor offensive showing for the Dragons yesterday. Dragons lost the battle between two very scrappy teams. There must have been at least 10 jump balls, which is common when you have two teams really working hard and battling for each possession. Bailey just wasn't herself yesterday. I was wondering if maybe she wasn't feeling well, as she was not playing in some key stretches late in the game with Drexel trailing.

Pacific is a really good team. Still, if Drexel wants to be taken seriously as an elite mid-major, they have to win games against other mid-majors, especially at home.

I found out they had postgame autographs with the players...by seeing Instagram photos of it hours later. I thought maybe I missed an ad but there was nothing on Facebook and hasn’t been anything on dd.com.

Today was my daughter’s first birthday. I may have changed our plans if I knew this was happening.

A shame they didnt advertise that. Those things usually bring more young fans out. A nice victory nonetheless over Richmond

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
I think RPI is still used in women's basketball. Here is our schedule so far with the team RPI's. It is still very early but I think we can appreciate the challenge of our schedule so far. Also why that Pacific game would have been a huge win in our quest for a potential at large

Drexel- 48, SOS 30

Davidson (W)- 63
Depaul (L)- 12
Pacific (L)- 11
Richmond (W)- 23
Buffalo- 140
St Joes- 131
Villanova- 156
Bucknell- 324
La Salle- 65
Penn- 107
Maine- 241

JMU- 66
W&M- 171
Elon- 174

With that said here is the latest bracketology and only Depaul is in the field (as a 5 seed). JMU is a 10 seed as our conference autobid. The best of the rest section for the bubble is comical and sadly true of the women's game. All 12 teams listed as final in to next 4 out are all from major conferences.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
So over the weekend we lost another competitive game to Buffalo and then beat St Joes. 2-0 was really needed, but 1-1 is ok. For Drexel, a berth to the NCAA will only be through the CAA tournament. We had chances and couldnt no capitalize on any of them. Buffalo went 2-0 in the Hawk Classic, us and St Joes went 1-1 with American losing both. Next game for the women is hopefully not the last game we face Nova with Denise on our sideline versus theirs.

JMU is still the top team to worry about. Their only 2 losses were to Maryland and UVA. As strong as the CAA is, I do not see an at large worthy team unless either us or JMU run the table and lose to the other in the title game and even then it will be borderline.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
I definitely expected more out of the CAA this year and really thought that it could be a multi-team league. Drexel is somewhat disappointing, but the have played a really tough schedule and they've already beaten 3 Atlantic 10 teams so far. I would have expected much more out of Towson, Delaware, UNCW, and Northeastern. All are having disappointing seasons so far. Charleston has been a nice surprise. W&M has their usual strong early season start playing cupcakes. So this is pointing to another same ole, same ole season for Drexel. They'll likely have another strong regular season, finish with 20+ wins and 2nd or 3rd in the CAA, lose to a bigger and stronger team in the CAA Tournament and win 0-1 games in the WNIT.

Sounds about right, JB. Unfortunately the stakes are even higher this year, seemingly, because of the Villanova situation.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
i was looking around a bit and didn't realize how tough our schedule really is. pacific's only loss was oregon state who is in the top 10. one of buffalo's 2 losses was #1 stanford and they "only" lost by 19.

i'm planning to go up to bucknell on sunday. it looks like a good challenge for us too. i've heard we've gotten a bit bigger so we'll see. like you said jb...we'll have a ceiling if we can't match up with the size/athleticism of teams like jmu. still a damn good ceiling...but not quite where everyone probably wants.

Our schedule has been what you need for an at large, no doubt. However you have to win some of the games. Credit to Denise for the schedule to challenge her players early on. She certainly is giving this team a chance to dance for Bailey, but the results have not been there yet. We should be highly prepared for CAA play.

Enjoy the game at Bucknell. I don't think I'll be able to watch that one. Taylor O'Brien, #11 for Bucknell lives down the street from me. I occasionally check out her stats to see how she's doing. She's scoring 7 ppg for them. Last year, Bucknell played at the DAC, and I was hoping for a homecoming crowd at the DAC from Plymouth Whitemarsh HS, but there was a freak November snowstorm the night of the game, and nobody was able to make it.

Pulled off the win against Nova. That would have been a rough one to let slip away.

We let it slip away, we got fortunate to leave victorious. 2 field goals in the final 8:12 of the 4th quarter and all 5 minutes of OT. You cant do that against anyone and expect to win. Our offense got stagnant and was rough in the 4th quarter. Defense played well, as always.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
It was actually 1 basket made in the final 13;47 of regulation. Drexel led 42-30 with 3:47 left in the 3rd quarter. Nilill had a basket with 8:12 left and then there were 2 free throws by Brown and nothing else. I'll give credit to Nova's incredible defensive stops but wow. This team really seems to struggle on offense at times. They were clearly playing not to lose. But I will give credit to Drexel's amazing defensive effort. To only lead by 12 with 13:47 left, score just 4 points the rest of the regulation, and still not lose...that's pretty remarkable from a defensive standpoint.

Really exciting final seconds in overtime. Fantastic play to get the ball to Bailey to put in the game winner.

Despite the frustrating 4th quarter, it was a still a huge win for this program to beat a team from the Big East. I would like to have seen 1 or 2 more wins out of this team, but their RPI is still at 43 and they've played the 27th toughest schedule in the country.

RE: Drexel Women's Basketball 2019-2020
These offensive struggles are not new. We are really a 1 woman team and when she struggles or isnt involved, we really dont score. We dont move or cut well beyond bailey, and we truly dont have good shooters to help out. It was very frustrating to watch us not getting Bailey the ball and Bailey not cutting during their run, when we need her. She showed up in OT more, including the very nicely drawn up play for the win, but not sure why she stopped playing like herself during the stretch run.

Also question her decision to purposely miss the final FT. I realize there was .9 seconds left but make it go up 3 and I would take my chance. I understand you make it they take a timeout and move up the court, but they would have done the same thing had they gotten the rebound on the miss. In the end the violation (maybe on purpose?) didnt allow movement up the court and we prevailed.

Was also curious from Denise to not foul and let the final possession play out. Leaving 6 seconds, and moving up the court, seemed highly risky for a team that couldnt score. Again this is a Villanova team we should beat, especially at home. Very pleased we held on, we needed this win, but we have plenty to clean up if we wish to compete with JMU.

For the Bailey issues, I think that Nova really nailed down their defense and focused on keeping Bailey from getting the ball. She's a really good player, but she's not Della Donne.

On the plays toward the end of overtime, my guess is that Nova was struggling offensively to score. Drexel probably thought that they had a better chance of getting them to force a turnover or take a shot and miss, which is what happened, since there would still be enough time left for Drexel to take the lead. Nova is a good free throw shooting team, so I guess she figured that if she fouled them on purpose, they would most likely make the foul shots and go up by 3, making it almost impossible for Drexel. Turns out, Denise made the right call, and it worked out for Drexel.

Regarding the final free throws, we at the game agreed that Bailey should miss that second shot on purpose. If Bailey didn't mess up the free throw, then it would be impossible for Nova to rebound the ball and go the length of the court in .9 seconds. Even though Bailey screwed up and Nova got the final in bounds, I think they still had to go the length of the court since the shot wasn't made.
I think Denise made the right calls on both plays tonight that you discussed.

I didn't keep my game sheet, but I believe Villanova was out of TOs and couldn't advance the ball to midcourt. The violation would not have prevented that option.

Announcers said they had 1 so that is what I was going with. It may not be correct

Yes Bailey is no EDD. She isnt even a Gabi. But she is our focus and our seemingly only offensive option. Sure Nova defense plays some role, they were big, however, she was not even cutting and posting up like she does. That is where I was coming from. Even if you dont get the ball you can still be making those cuts and running through your progressions. Instead she was mostly just standing outside the 3 point arc.
