This is what happens when you play a soft schedule just for meaningless wins. Same for basketball obviously.

I don't think it has anything to do with the schedule. Our offense is horrible and that has nothing to do with who we have played. The defense and special teams aren't having the same issues really.

What I felt after watching last week's game. We have one phase of our team that against decent competition looks like it belongs in a lower division. The other two can hang with anybody in the G5.

I’m not so sure our special teams are very good. After Mitchell’s kickoff return in the first game against Alabama State, we have had a hard time getting to ball past our own 20 (and his miscue at the end of the first half cost us points). And when we haven’t had the touchbacks kicking off (and our percentage is lower than last year) we have not covered the kicks well. And Greenwell hasn’t been very impressive today.

This team was not expected to compete for a title. Getting to a bowl game would have been considered an achievement at the start of the season. We're bowl eligible and a win over UTEP guarantees another bowl game. I'm good with that.

They haven't played great, but they also haven't caused us to lose games this year. To be honest they have improved from last year. Our special teams caused us a ton of issues last year.
Here are 2019 rankings according to FPI:
Offense: #103
Defense: #76
Special Teams: #54
2nd worst offense we have had in 10+ years.

RE: UAB USM Game Thread
I think we look less talented overall as a team than we did in 2017. That is disappointing and it reduces my expectations for next year. We need another large influx of talent to make up for what was lost after 2018.
The idea of challenging for that G5 New Years spot next year seems kinda far-fetched at this point.

I will be shocked if we don't have at least a new OC when we open spring practice in 2020.

Stop talking about winning enough just to go to a bowl. Last year was great but mostly because we won the conference. In the future winning 6 by beating cupcakes to go to a meaningless bowl wont sustain this program, grow our fanbase, or keep the community interested.

I am not surprised that we lost. We were underdogs. On the road. To a pretty good team.
But I thought we would at least show up and be competitive, and not lay an inspired, questionable-effort egg.
Very disappointing, and certainly the biggest embarrassment since The Return.
There’s always UTEP.

That's because their season ticket packages contain enough quality teams to make season tickets worth purchasing. You have to endure the bad games in order to view the good teams. We dont have that ability. You can walk up to any of our games and purchase a ticket. Once again the same applies to basketball. Nobody likes cupcakes but accept them to a point. My point was if you play a ton of bad teams you dont get better and are not prepared when you face quality competition.
