Why?

MAC is adding the sport as a conference championship sport.

I'd rather see SB.

Agreed. Heck, with good management EMU could do both.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports for women in the country! It's fast paced as well! We've it here where I live!

I don't know the numbers but I'm sure it pales in comparison to softball. Softball is still growing in popularity with thousands of girls playing the sport in Michigan. Every high school has it. Very few have lacrosse. Softball would be a better way of serving the state of Michigan. Besides, emu already has a facility for softball.

I don't know the dollars and scholarships, etc. of softball vs. lacrosse. Once again, adding a women's sport is Title IX.

Folks closer to Ypsi than me might know if EMU has other plans for the softball field land. Looking at the map, the softball field is adjacent to Green Lot #2 and the new health care building.

I don't know if EMU has future uses for that land. Getting rid of Green Lot #2 and the softball field opens up a lot of prime land along N. Huron. I don't know, for example, if expanding The Village would make sense?

I believe the Cornell Apartments are pretty old. [they were old when I went to EMU and my Medicare card has turned yellow. p.s. that's a joke]

EDIT: I found an EMU online map:

https://www.emich.edu/map/

And Google:

RE: New Women's Sport LaCrosse
Here is a good article from Detroit News...

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports...513658001/

My take: The judge says you have to comply with Title IX and please reinstate softball per the plaintiff's request.

EMU says we agree that we have to remedy a Title IX issue, but we choose lacrosse...

I assume the student who brought the action has since graduated or transferred or something to make the case moot relative to her current standing as a student-athlete.

Dear Friends,
Talking with Athletic Director Wetherbee, this was a compromise with the court. Eastern would be able to drop softball, but add lacrosse. He (Wetherbee) also said that spending for lacrosse would be cheaper then softball. If, this last statement is true, then this is the direction Eastern wants to move.
I know there will be complaints about spending for football, and making lacrosse sacrifice, but things are what they are. One more point about expenses. Wetherbee said a major factor for dropping softball was the large amount of money spent on spring trips.

Excellent Ken.

I remember when dropping softball first came up I looked at their schedule and it looked similar to that of baseball.

baseball and softball are very expensive for cold weather schools because their seasons start so early and the need to get out of the cold in Feb and March. Those trips can be long and expensive. Tough on both expenses and academics.

I have no problem with collegiate baseball but because of the calendar it is a very difficult sport for schools in the Midwest. The season is over and students are gone for summer before the weather gets summer-like.

Actually - I have. I coach softball and sent kids to their camps a few years ago. If EMU softball had any kind of winning history they may have avoided the chopping block, but they've were the dregs of the conference for years.

As for lacrosse - fastest growing sport for young women in MI, and solves all the Title IX BS

They dropped men’s swimming and diving. 34 MAC titles. 34 times more than football.

Conveniently leaving out the fact that softball only had one MAC title. The exact same number as football.
