Utah got invited into AAU
PAC 12 membership has done wonders for this WAC/MWC founder.
They don’t get this invite if their still in the MWC

I thought the AAU tried to keep their size pretty stable. Have they kicked out anyone recently, or is this a sign they're starting to expand?

RE: Utah got invited into AAU
Great news for Utah.

I do think, at some point down the line, we will witness some type of merger of the B1G and PAC (maybe not 100% merger, but definitely a high-combination of schools), and it would definitely be rooted in the AAU associations. Toss in a Kansas, or an Iowa State, or a Texas, or a Rice, and you could easily have a national high academic/athletic conference that would cover all four time zones.

They kicked Nebraska and Syracuse around 2011 or 2012.

Great news for Utah. Their place in the P5 just got more secure.

The nation is growing. The AAU schools mostly have plateaued with their enrollment.

Miami and Wake Forest were high in their rankings back when UNL got kicked out. Utah and Dartmouth were pretty high too.

Looked up the listing from 2010. Dartmouth was #37, the highest non-member who wasn't a specialty school (like UC-San Francisco a medical school). Utah was 2nd at #49. UC-Santa Cruz was 3rd at #52. UAB and UMBC were between Dartmouth and Utah, but that is due to their medical schools. UAB has one of the tops in the country. RPI was 55, Wake Forest 57 and Miami 59. So I guess Wake and Miami have to wait.

IN 2012, University of Maryland Baltimore (the med school) agreed to unite with University of Maryland College Park, leaving UMBC out of the picture.

UCSF offers only graduate and professional degrees; no undergraduate degrees. All of the members of AAU offer undergraduate as well as graduate degrees.

They kicked Nebraska out, but Syracuse left voluntarily to avoid being next.

Utes will still lose to Oregon, if not sooner. It just shows even cretins can get some academic love.

RE: Utah got invited into AAU
That makes it 9 out of 12. If another joins it would probably be Arizona State, but that will depend on how far ASU progresses in the relevant fields.

This also makes a future merger with a known conference more palatable, but that's for a different discussion.

RE: Utah got invited into AAU
I’m curious as to what sparked the decision to open up that air tight closed door? They don’t just admit AAU schools on a whim? Internal pressure from the UCs/PAC 12 block supported by the Ivies to get the votes? (2 of yours for 1 of ours?)

If they Big 10 and the Pac 12 merge, what happens to the Grandaddy Of Them All?

They already have a good working partnership so a merger is not happening.

Right. So they aren't eligible. Incidentally, they are rated #2 on the list, behind Rockefeller University and ahead of every AAU school.
