UNCW looked good but couldn't hit anything at ALL tonight! Played really hard ball! Phillips is the TRUTH!!!!!! Sims is always consistent too. Liked some of the offensive sets...really did. Linsen was good too. Need to get Jay and Okauru going. And, our hired gun couldn't the get the ball to drop. If he hits his normal, that is a VERY interesting game.

If it makes Hoops feel better, I feel like this UNC team is going to be a massive disappointment for their fans this year.

82, you were right. They may have that preseason ranking in the top 10 but I’d be surprised if they finish in the top 3 in the ACC at this point. That UNC team has zero depth and will get steam rolled by a lot of teams with cold shooting nights like tonight.

Great job by our guys fighting the whole game. I was only able to catch the 2nd half but I’ll be honest... I didn’t think the refs were that bad. I’ll take y’all word for it that they screwed up in the first half though. All the calls they made in the 2nd looked legit.

Sims with a double double. I like his game this year. I hate his hair. Same for Shykeim. He’s gonna be a heck of a PG. He’s young and forces a few too many but he’ll get the hang of it. I love Okauru’s defense. TOEWS is still an elite passer and his distance shots are falling. Needs some mid range work still, especially on the fade-away against lengthy opponents. I think Boggs is going to turn into a beast on the boards too. He needs some more weight on him though. I don’t like Skaggs. He doesn’t play in the flow of the offense. He heaves bad contested shots as soon as he touches the ball. If it’s gonna be contested... pass it and wait on a better shot. Be a team player. If you’re wide open, take the shot. Stop rushing contested looks.

Also... that extended three point line. I have a funny feeling that alone will lower 3 pt percentages across the league. I liked seeing our guys close out on those shots quicker though.

Overall, I’m pleased with the effort. Of the team, coaches and fans in Trask. Glad some naysayers were wrong on that account. Lol

The talent is there to compete IMO, most of the newcomers have looked good. The lone exception is Skaggs. Pretty sure I could shoot at a higher percentage at this rate

We’d never know as I won’t be on the same court to compare apples to apples. I’m not as fast as I once was but I can still shoot. Regardless my point was his shooting has been flat out terrible although a small sample size. Until he can prove he can shoot at a higher clip he shouldn’t be jacking up so many threes

Lol. I know. Was just messin with ya boss. I agree. If his contribution is to be a knock down shooter from deep he needs to get it together and be smarter about when he’s taking shots.

Looks like Skaggs is a big time streak shooter. He got hot the first game and hit four in a row. His shots look rushed, but apparently that doesn't matter. Either he's going to be on fire or cold as ice. There doesn't seem to be an in between with him.

RE: # 9 UNC
I'm very good at player evaluation and I saw Sims last year and told y'all first and was right. He's absolutely legit period and is our leading scorer. Phillips is the next big thing. He's legit period with elite athletic ability and body control. He defends, rebounds and is an amazing talent. He proved tonight that he needs big minutes period and I don't care if it's at PG or even off the ball some, he has to play 20 minute per night as he's going to get double figures and defend. Once he gets his 3 ball ready, it's over and I mean over. He can get to the cup at will and is good enough to finish or get fouled.

Even though UNCW didn't score the ball at a high clip, they played the game at a high level on both ends. Their offense looked good and dare I say the defense looked improved too. Kai did a good job of handling the ball, as did Philips, and they got some really good looks. Hawks have some guys that can create advantage plays off the dribble or screens. They had some very well designed plays off screening action going to the cup against ELITE bigs. They worked hard and together to make it tough.

The one glaring stat to me was 5-28 from 3. You can say that Skaggs shouldn't take the shots, but that is what he is, a great shooter that could not hit at all tonight. You won't see that performance very often from him. He can shoot the pill and if 1 went down, it would have been a bomb session. Estime is better than that too and missed shots that he can make in his sleep, very good shooter. Sims is such an all around player that he will get his each night/excellent player.

Bottom line from this game, they never backed down once, even shooting a terrible percentage. They looked light years better in their offensive flow and had more paint points that UNC. Yes, that's right. They have to build on this performance. The score really didn't even reflect the differential to me tonight because they hung in there against an elite team but were missing shot after shot.

And, yes, UNC is an elite team period. They have the best guard in college hoops and have more size than pretty much anybody. It's a shame that the UNC guy got hurt and they brought in the Tribe guy because he won the game for them as a 5th year senior that can hit 3's like crazy.

Staff has done a good job getting talent and they played well tonight regardless of coming up short. All 3 freshmen were nice and the 2 soph players, Sims and Linsen, also were good. Folks, these guys are going to be here for a while and will get even better.

Onto the Camels. If they play ball like this, it's a W with ease. And, their hair styles looked fine to me! In fact, I like them!

RE: # 9 UNC
It's really hard to evaluate this team with just 2 games against such completely different levels of talent. But, a few things stand out to me.

Since we are running a 4 guard set, we are going to have to go with the best players. Okauru, Skaggs and Tolefree haven't performed to expectation. We especially need Skaggs and Okauru to step it up or they are going to lose PT.

Philllips has got to be on the floor. He has game changing talent and quickness. If it were my team, i'd start him at the 2 with Toews at PG, then rotate Toews out for a quick rest and slide Phillips over to PG until he comes back and rest Phillips. Okauru would be my backup for them at this time. When Gadsden returns it's going to create a huge mess, so i'd rotate Toews, Phillps and Gadsden in the 1-2 spots at that point. Phillips isn't going to hang around UNCW as a back up PG until Toews graduates. One of my greatest concerns was too many guards on the roster at the 1-2 spot and not enough PT and that's looking even worse than I expected with Philllips showing out so quickly. Our best case scenario may be a Gadsden redshirt year. Phillips(fresh), Toews(soph), Gadsden(soph), Okauru(jr).

I'm more impressed with Linssen than I thought i'd be. We didn't set plays for him to score against the Chefs, but we did last night and he produced. Showed he can finish against size, which I was worried about. Also had good enough hands to take the lob over the top off the high post pick and roll. He and Dodd look like they will do a good job rotating in and out at the 5. With the injury, the UNC bigs that played weren't all that impressive. Big, but not overly talented. Nathan Knight will be a much more difficult player to handle in the post. The slip screen lob is very effective with 4 guards clearing out the lane. Cacok feasted on our oppenents with that one play. I hope we use it as much as possible this year since all our bigs were able to finish with it. Bowen and Boggs also looked decent against a big post presence.

Can't really tell what we will look like defensively. UNC didn't really have huge 3 point threats beyond freakin' Justin Pierce, and he lit us up with wide open 3's. Anthony came into UNC with a concern about his 3 point shot. He hit against ND, but didn't against us. He had open looks. Quite frankly, there are several CAA teams with better overall 3 point shooting than we faced last night. IMO, jury is stilll out on defense as we couldn't shut down a glorified rec team, while a top 10 team had a pretty bad offensive showing.

It will be nice to get into our normal OOC play to really see what this team can do. McGrath seems to have a pretty good scheme running with four guards. Good ball movement, rotation and screens seemed to get us the shots we wanted.

You always take it just a bit too far. Agree with you on Phillips and Simms. But to call a guy with a .386 career percentage from 3 (prob lower now) “Great” couldn’t possibly be more of a stretch. That said I’m sure he’s a decent shooter, but as 33 said he’s just rushing(jacking up shots). He needs to take shots more within the flow of the offense and not just be a launch pad. Jacking a three in the first five seconds of the shot clock isn’t good for the offense or defense. In fact UNC blew this game open when we fell in love with quick threes and were not hitting.

And to call UNC “elite” at this stage is also a stretch. And Elite team would blow the doors off of UNCW. Also to call a guy with two college games in his career(one of which he took 24 shots to get 20 points) the best guard in all of college basketball is also a stretch. Could he be, sure. But not at this stage.

But maybe I should just take your word because “you are very good at player evaluation “ toot your own horn much?

Brother, homie can shoot the pill. Shot selection is key however. And, Hoops, you brag that you can shoot better than a player out there and then bust my chops for simply telling the truth about evaluating players? Who do you think started this board for UNCW and got everybody over here and moderated it for many years? I've been doing this for a while. And, I don't doubt your ability on the court or your ability or others ability to evaluate players.

The problem with this board is that I'm drowning and 50% or more are describing the water!! I need actual basketball discussion from guys. Some do it well often and some seldom do. Stats are one thing but breaking it down is another thing whether that's player evaluation or scheme. I enjoy hearing others takes on scheme where I'm decent but not great at.

Obviously the effort was great and the players fed off the crowd. Also not as many UNC fans as some thought there might be!
UNC has a deep bench and it showed up in this game scoring the ball. I thought the best thing Anthony showed last night was his defense on Toews, the guy is really strong and sits down hard, totally controlled Toews in the half court sets. The pick and roll at the top was good at times but just to many missed 3's by Skaggs. Hate to rag the kid but he also was not good on defense, slow feet and looks out of shape to me. UNC brings in Huffman off the bench and I think he would be the best big in the CAA now. Huffman made a difference for them giving Brooks a blow on the boards. UNCW was able to cut down the offensive rebounding by Carolina in the second half but at some point you gotta make a shot . UNC helped keep the game close for a while with terrible FT shooting but the offensive board work gave them so many extra shots it evened things out for them. UNC also will be a different team later in the season.

They don't have a lot of players that play but the guys that came off the bench played well and that is my point. Not a typical Carolina for sure but their bench played a huge role in the game. Pierce came in for Bacot after he was injured and had a double.double in the first half. Platek played minutes and was good defensively and had a few baskets. For UNCW I thought Phillips played well and scored some,Dodd was decent and the rest were just ok. UNC had 28 points and 17 rebounds off the bench. I would say that is a significant contribution when you only score 78 points for the entire game. Maybe not as deep as some years but if you have a Huffman type guy riding the bench its a good thing for sure.

They don’t. Roy mentions it as a concern in his presser. All in all, happy with the effort from our guys but we still have a long way to go. We will have to be better on Tuesday if we want to beat the Camels.

Roy says he watched Skaggs hit 11 in a row in warmups. Now all he has to do is transfer that to the court. I saw a sample of it in the first game. Hopefully he was just putting too much pressure on himself and will settle down and fix that. Can't write him off yet.
