Definitely let one get away today. Led for first 30 minutes and let things slip away in the third. Tied the game with a couple minutes to go but then NE benefitted from some friendly home rims and pulled it out.
21-24 and 7-12. W&M led the country in free throw shooting (81%) and NE was 8th out of 10 CAA teams. So guess which of those numbers were the free throws for each team. Free throws won it for NE.
The announcers said that Eva Hodgson was nursing a sore wrist. She did sit for most of the third quarter. Swanson HAD to put her in for the 4th and Eva responded with about 10 points that quarter. If she could have played the third quarter then perhaps the Tribe wins.
The officiating was horrendous. In the first half they must have called at least 6 travels/double dribbles on the Tribe. There was one crucial sequence late in the game where NE missed a FT and the Tribe rebounded it. NE (two players) hacked our girl mercilessly (no call!!), dislodged the ball, picked it up, threw up a prayer (which went in) and drew a foul call. Ed Swanson nearly had a stroke yelling at the lead official. NE always seems to get the benefit of the calls when we play them. I have watched every game of the last 6-8 that we have played them. W&M outplayed them all but one of those games but NE actually won about 6 of them.
The Tribe has a big problem closing out quarters. Today they led 14-7 in the first quarter with only about 30 seconds to go. NE sank a bucket to make it 14-9. At that point, W&M should have held for the last shot and thus would have had at least a 14-9 lead. But no! Someone jacked up a three, NE got the rebound, ran downcourt, and then sank a three of their own at the buzzer. So the lead was 14-12. Inexcusable. Then, the end of the third quarter was absolutely atrocious. NE led by 2. They sank a bucket and got fouled. They actually missed the FT (!) but got the rebound and made a layup -- plus another foul, of course! -- and sank that FT to make it basically a 5 point play and a 7-point lead at the end of the quarter. If the Tribe could learn to get their head out of their @ss near the end of every quarter then they would win more games.
Lastly, why is Bre Bellamy, a freshman, starting over Sydney Wagner (a redshirt soph)? Wagner is older, more experienced, and presumably a little more mature. She sees the floor very well, handles the ball very well, and shoots the ball better. Bellamy has won ROW several times but that doesn't mean that she should be starting every game. The season is advanced enough now that Swanson can't afford to be giving away any more games. Need to be getting a good seed for the tournament.
