Hodgson and Reynolds scored 20 points apiece but that wasn't enough.

Tribe shot very well at times. Despite tonight’s result, this W&M team seems pretty darn good.

Tribe up big after 1Q.

Freshman Bre Bellamy has 10, while senior Victoria Reynolds has 11 and the Tribe leads it 28-18 after one. #GoTribe https://t.co/3fDrvdJYzG

RE: Women's Basketball 2019-20
Women almost faltered down the stretch, but held on for an 83-75 win at Towson. Towson picked to finish 3rd preseason, but have been a little disappointing to date, despite two first team preseason players. Amazing that Hodgson got no preseason mention, despite being last season's ROY. Tribe lead the nation in FT%, but slipped a bit today. Record moved to 10-3.

Back to Kaplan against UNCW Friday night, then a big game at the Kap with 9-4 Charleston on Sunday. Charleston knocked off #2 preseason Drexel and #4 Delaware this weekend at home.

This is a much improved team...they gave Number1 everything they could handle on JMU's court and won at Towson this afternoon handily.

They'll only get better.

Trailing a mid-pack UNCW team by 9 heading to 4Q. Needed a 3 pointer at the buzzer to get it to single digits.

Their size is killing us - and their three-point shooting.

I generally see a WBB game or two each year on my forays up north. We simply never seem to have a competitive inside game.

Women shellacked Hofstra on the road today, 66-53. to run their record to 12-3 and 3-2 in the CAA.

Hodgeson and Reynolds led the ladies with 23 points each. Both had very good total games: Hodgeson with 5rb, 4 assists, and 3 steals; Reynolds with
12 rb and 3 steals.

Hofstra was sponsoring an education program with local elementary or middle schools. They had over 2700 in attendance, mostly kids. In fact, if I remember correctly, W&M was there for the same event last year and maybe the year before, too.

Meanwhile, here is a feature on Eva Hodgson on the CAA site:

03-banghead 03-banghead 03-banghead 03-banghead 03-banghead

Definitely let one get away today. Led for first 30 minutes and let things slip away in the third. Tied the game with a couple minutes to go but then NE benefitted from some friendly home rims and pulled it out.

21-24 and 7-12. W&M led the country in free throw shooting (81%) and NE was 8th out of 10 CAA teams. So guess which of those numbers were the free throws for each team. Free throws won it for NE.

The announcers said that Eva Hodgson was nursing a sore wrist. She did sit for most of the third quarter. Swanson HAD to put her in for the 4th and Eva responded with about 10 points that quarter. If she could have played the third quarter then perhaps the Tribe wins.

The officiating was horrendous. In the first half they must have called at least 6 travels/double dribbles on the Tribe. There was one crucial sequence late in the game where NE missed a FT and the Tribe rebounded it. NE (two players) hacked our girl mercilessly (no call!!), dislodged the ball, picked it up, threw up a prayer (which went in) and drew a foul call. Ed Swanson nearly had a stroke yelling at the lead official. NE always seems to get the benefit of the calls when we play them. I have watched every game of the last 6-8 that we have played them. W&M outplayed them all but one of those games but NE actually won about 6 of them.

The Tribe has a big problem closing out quarters. Today they led 14-7 in the first quarter with only about 30 seconds to go. NE sank a bucket to make it 14-9. At that point, W&M should have held for the last shot and thus would have had at least a 14-9 lead. But no! Someone jacked up a three, NE got the rebound, ran downcourt, and then sank a three of their own at the buzzer. So the lead was 14-12. Inexcusable. Then, the end of the third quarter was absolutely atrocious. NE led by 2. They sank a bucket and got fouled. They actually missed the FT (!) but got the rebound and made a layup -- plus another foul, of course! -- and sank that FT to make it basically a 5 point play and a 7-point lead at the end of the quarter. If the Tribe could learn to get their head out of their @ss near the end of every quarter then they would win more games.

Lastly, why is Bre Bellamy, a freshman, starting over Sydney Wagner (a redshirt soph)? Wagner is older, more experienced, and presumably a little more mature. She sees the floor very well, handles the ball very well, and shoots the ball better. Bellamy has won ROW several times but that doesn't mean that she should be starting every game. The season is advanced enough now that Swanson can't afford to be giving away any more games. Need to be getting a good seed for the tournament.

Wagner is a 5’6 2 guard in a 1 guard’s body, Bellamy is a 6’0 power forward, they play two different positions. A more realistic scenario would be Eichner starting over Bellamy, but that’s almost a wash so Swanson will go with getting a freshman the start. Swanson has consistently favored starting the best defenders over great shooters, which is why barring injury you won’t see Wagner, Birdsong or Krause in the starting lineup

Eichner would get even more rebounds if she started over Bellamy but she doesn't shoot very well (she missed a layup today when she was literally the only player within 5 feet of the basket) and when she dribbles it is a turnover just waiting to happen --- so I can see Bellamy over her. However, I think Wagner just adds so much more offensively. When she was in the game, she was the point guard most of the time (probably to rest Hodgson's wrist).

Speaking of Birdsong and Krause, they might have been handy late in the game for their 3-point shooting. But their defense is suspect so I'm sure that's why Swanson never put them in.

Now that I have splurged for Flosports I look forward to seeing a lot more of the games the rest of the way.

RE: Women's Basketball 2019-20
Hodgson and Pollard are the guards, Reynolds and Bellamy are the forwards, and Rogers is the center. Wagner subs in for Pollard and Hodgson. Eichner subs in for Rogers. I could definitely see Wagner starting in front of Pollard in games where the opponent is small, but against bigger teams, we are small in general. Rogers is the only real big body who plays, but she's a finesse player. Bellamy is similar on offense, but plays good defense. Eichner is more physical, but not as skilled.

I think we're doing okay.

I think we're doing okay.

My bad, I didn't know that there was a hard and fast rule that we had to play two forwards and two guards -- instead of the one forward and three guards that I am espousing. As far as scoring goes, Wagner could easily replace Pollard but is not as good on defense. Pollard scored the first 5 points of the game yesterday but only got 2 more the rest of the way. Some games she scores zero.

Sure, we are doing okay --- just like we are doing okay every year after OOC -- but then comes the conference play and, well, to quote the NE announcers, the Tribe has yet to finish above .500 in the league in a long, long time. When I see the team lose to opponents in "bad" fashion, that is, giving away games that we should win, then I want to do this: 03-banghead 03-banghead

Since Huge fired Shaver who, let's face it, had a lot more success than Swanson ever has, then Ed might want to check his seat to see if it is getting warm. Women's basketball is one of Huge's "big three" sports. No one can say that this team is overachieving.

RE: Women's Basketball 2019-20
Zorch, I'm not saying that you can't start 3 guards, I was just giving you the starting lineup. If you want to have a three guard offense, you can have that since Bellamy is listed as a G/F. You can also have a 4 guard offense when Eichner is in there for Rogers because she's listed as a G/F too. I guess Swanson is the one who knows what positions they play in his offense. Of course this is in jest. I agree that Wagner has outplayed Pollard over the last several games, and she brings a lot of energy. She and Hodgson are very much in sync on the offensive end.

I don't think Swanson is in any trouble, but I could be wrong.
