I wonder if Kelly will remain at Central for her senior season. She redshirted her freshman year, so she might be graduating this year, in which case she could play a year at a top ten school if she wanted. She also could choose to play professionally, since her stock will never be higher than it will be after this fantastic season.

I believe Kelly was transferring to DePaul this summer and even may have spent some time there but returned to Central. Great decision for her. Because of that, I would think she stays with the Chips.

That's odd. She transferred from DePaul to Central at the beginning of her freshman year. She is really carrying what is otherwise a mediocre team.

Cece Hooks missed Wednesday's game for the old "unspecified violation of team rules," according to the OU student newspaper.

Impressive that they could win on the road without her.[/u]

Never heard anything around campus about her leaving. I don't think there was too much concern with Guevara's assistant Heather Oesterle taking over the job. Kelly has some help though, Molly Davis will probably make all-freshman. I'd be surprised if she went anywhere, the entire starting lineup is composed of underclassmen.

RE: MAC WBB
Buffalo's victory over Kent State was the only road victory in the MAC Saturday, so the Bulls move even with Ohio in the "golf standings."

Here's the Saturday roundup:

Central Michigan continues to roll. The Chippewas, 7-0 in the conference, beat second-place Toledo 73-66, coming from behind in the fourth quarter for the third straight game. This time they outscored the Rockets 21-10 in the last 10 minutes. Freshman Molly Davis had a career-high 28 points; Micaela Kelly had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Toledo's Nakiah Black, returning from an injury, had 19 points.

Western Michigan became the first team in the conference to sweep an opponent with a 79-71 victory over Akron. The Broncos had beaten Toledo in the league opener and have already won more games (11) than they did all last season. Leighah-Amori Wool had 21 points and eight rebounds for Western. Jordyn Dawson had 17 to lead Akron.

Eastern Michigan beat Northern Illinois 62-55 in a game that saw neither team lead by more than seven points. Autumn Hudson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Eastern; Courtney Woods had 27 points and nine rebounds for NIU.

Ohio's Cece Hooks made nine of 11 field goals, scored 25 points and had eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals to lead the Bobcats past Bowling Green 79-69. Catterrion Thompson had 20 points and eight rebounds for BG.

Four players scored in double figures to lead Ball State past Miami 80-63. Thelma Dis Augustdottir led the Cardinals with 19 points. Lauren Dickerson had 20 and nine rebounds for Miami.

THE "GOLF" STANDINGS

They give a team -1 for a road win (a “birdie”) and adds a point for a home loss (a “bogey.” A home win or road loss gets zero (“par”).

I enjoy all your coverage of MAC women's hoops. Here is a way to make it more accurate. One way of checking your golf standings to see if they are correct is that the plus and minus totals should be the same. That is because when a road team wins and gets a minus, the home team that they beat gets a plus. In your standings you have a total of minus 11 and plus 8. I went through and I came up with one less minus for Buffalo, Ohio, and Eastern, which would leave us with +8 and -8 which I think is correct.

RE: MAC WBB
Central Michigan won yet another road game against strong competition to continue to run away in the "golf" and regular standings. Eastern Michigan also won on the road.

Here's the Wednesday roundup:

Central beat Buffalo 98-83 in double overtime in Buffalo. The Chippewas came from behind in the fourth quarter for the fourth straight game and won despite star guard Micaela Kelly's fouling out in the first minute of the first overtime. Kelly had the first triple-double of her career with 14 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Molly Davis scored 25 points for CMU. Buffalo's Dyaisha Fair had 29 points but didn't score in either overtime. It was Central's fifth road win of the MAC season. Chips are 8-0 in the league.

Eastern Michigan beat Toledo 77-62 at Toledo. Oklahoma State transfer Areanna Combs scored 27 point for the Eagles, who won at Toledo for the first time in four years. Nakiah Black had 13 for the Rockers.

Kent State went ahead on a Megan Carter layup with 10 seconds to play, and the Flashes beat Ball State 69-68 in Kent. Carter played 36 minutes and scored 20 points in her second game back from mononucleosis. KSU starting point guard Asiah Dingle, the team's second leading scorer, didn't play. KSU coach Todd Starkey wouldn't say why.

Ohio beat Akron 70-57 in Athens for its fourth straight win. Senior guard Amani Burke had 20 points, junior guard Cece Hooks 17, nine rebounds and seven steals. Akron led 34-32 at halftime but was held to 23 points in the second half.

The Western Michigan game at Miami was postponed at Western's request in a somewhat over-reaction to two suspected Coronovirus cases in Miami. The university remained open and operated normally. The game will be played Monday at Miami. The Miami-Central Michigan men's game was also postposed until Feb. 27.

Bowling Green and Northern Illinois had their midweek byes.

The "golf" standings

They give a team -1 for a road win (a “birdie”) and adds a point for a home loss (a “bogey.” A home win or road loss gets zero (“par”).

-5
-- Central Michigan (8-0, 15-4)

-1
-- Ohio (6-2, 13-6)
-- Ball State (5-3, 13-7)
-- Eastern Michigan (5-3, 10-9)

Even
-- Buffalo (4-4, 13-6)
-- Western Michigan (4-3, 11-7)
-- Kent State (4-3, 11-7)
-- Toledo (4-3, 9-9)

+2
-- Akron (2-6, 9-10)
-- Miami (1-6, 8-11)
-- Bowling Green (1-6, 8-11)
-- Northern Illinois (1-6, 5-13)

RE: MAC WBB
It's hard to figure whether Central Michigan is in the running for an at-large NCAA bid (if necessary). The Chips are ranked #18 in RPI, which would seem to make them a shoo-in. However, their best out-of-conference win is at #74 South Dakota State, and their best conference win is at #72 Ohio. I would be surprised if a team ranked as high as 18th ever failed to qualify for the tournament. On the other hand, I bet you would be hard-pressed to find a team that got an at-large bid when it didn't have a single win over a top 70 team.

So far Central has managed to win a ton of close games in conference. I would guess that the Chips will lost three conference games or thereabouts before the conference tournament, making this discussion moot anyway. We'll see what happens against Ohio today.

RE: MAC WBB
To me, the biggest surprises so far this season are Central Michigan being so good, Ohio being so average, and Northern Illinois being so bad. I also thought Kent State would be better. The Flashes' two sophomore starters, Lindsey Thall and Asia Dingle, are not doing as well this year as they did as freshmen, and now Dingle has been suspended for two games by her coach. Ohio somehow managed to get worse this year despite losing only one starter (not one of their best players) and gaining a transfer with good credentials (who so far has been a disappointment).

RE: MAC WBB
What's hurt Kent State has been consistency -- between quarters and between games. Thall and Dingle aren't much better than last season. Two two starting freshmen -- Katie Shumate and Nila Blackford -- are KSU's top two rebounders and double-figure scorers. But not many lineups with two freshmen and two sophomores are consistent.

A surprisingly big loss has been Ali Poole, who's out for the season with a blown ACL. Poole was Kent's fourth-leading scorer last season at about 9 points a game. She might not have started -- Blackford probably has more talent. But Poole would have given the team another senior presence on the court. Only Megan Carter plays meaningful minutes.

Of course many teams have injury problems. See Buffalo without Summer Hemphill. Or Western Michigan last season.

KSU's conference record -- 4-4 -- is exactly the same as it was at this time last season. Can they put together another second-half run? Can freshmen and sophomores grow up more?

RE: MAC WBB
Central Michigan finished the first half of the MAC season 9-0 and a four-point lead in the women's "golf" standings.

CMU won its second overtime game in a row, this one 92-90 over second-place Ohio. The Chippewas have beaten Ohio twice this season — by a total of three points. As dominant as Central has been in the standings, it's won only one conference game by more than 10 points.

Central star Micaela Kelly scored just 10 points, her lowest of the season and 13 off her average. But she had 12 assists (and 10 turnovers). Junior forward Kyra Bussell had a career-high 33 points; freshman guard Molly Davis had 23. Ohio guard Cierra Hooks had 35 points without making a 3-point basket.

The rest of the wrap-up:

In another overtime game, Akron beat Eastern Michigan 88-81 in Akron. Five Akron players scored in double figures, led by senior forward Haliegh Reinoehl with 19 and senior guard Alyssa Clay with 17. Clay had five 3-point baskets for the second game in a row. Eastern sophomore guard Juanita Agosto led five Eagles in double figures with a career-high 21 points.

Two games didn’t go to overtime but were just as close.

Ally May hit a layup with 4.9 second to go to give Northern Illinois a 64-63 upset over Buffalo at NIU. Senior forward Courtney Woods and junior guard Gabby Nikitinate had 17 points for Northern. Dyaisha Fair had 23 for Buffalo, which has lost three of four games.

Ball State freshman guard Estel Puiggros hit two free throws in the last 20 seconds to help the Cardinals hold off Western Michigan 68-65 in Muncie. Senior Jasmin Samz had 19 to lead Ball State. WMU graduate transfer Chelyane Bailey had 18 points.

Miami had four players score in double figures, led by freshman guard Peyton Scott’s 23, to lead the Redhawks to an 80-59 win at Bowling Green. Angela Perry had 23 points for BG but was the only Falcon in double figures.

Miami won at home again Monday night, beating Western 70-67 in a game postponed from last Wednesday when WMU panicked about two possible off-campus cases of coronavirus. (It turned out they weren't.)

THE "GOLF" STANDINGS

They give a team -1 for a road win (a “birdie”) and adds a point for a home loss (a “bogey.” A home win or road loss gets zero (“par”).

-5
-- Central Michigan (9-0, 16-4)

-1
-- Ball State (6-3, 14-7)
-- Ohio (6-3, 12-)
-- Eastern Michigan (5-4, 10-10)

Even
-- Toledo (5-3, 10-9)
-- Kent State (4-4, 11-8)
-- Buffalo (4-5, 13-7)
-- Western Michigan (4-5, 11-9)

+1
-- Miami (3-6, 10-11)

+2
-- Akron (3-6, 10-10)
-- Northern Illinois (2-6, 6-13)

+3
-- Bowling Green (1-7, 8-12).

Make that 3 in a row and 3 in 5 days. Miami defeated Toledo 92-83 in Oxford. Miami actually opened up a 25 point lead but we are not a deep team and with 3 games in 5 days I was still worried. Mariella Santucci had what surely must be a career game for the Rockets with 31 points and 9 rebounds. For Miami, freshman Peyton Scott had a career high for the second time in 5 days with 28 while Seniors Lauren Dickerson with 23 and Savannah Kluesner added 22. I think that is the first time Miami has ever had three 20 point scorers in the same game. Miami was 22 out of 23 from the line.

CMU WBB won at home against NIU after going cold from 3. Wasn't their best effort but still led the whole way. Kyra Bussell has become our most dependable player of late.

Frickin shot lights out from the line and from three. Way off average for both, but Toledo gave up loads of open shots. The 11 lady rotation has us fresh but not in sync defensively. Santucci has turned it on the past couple of weeks. Without her and Black scoring, we have to win in the 40's.
