UNH Band: Oh, the Hypocrisy!
Remember in 2016 when the refs gave the MRDs a warning for playing during the UNH game at Bridgeforth? First of all, I don't think they actually did that because they ALWAYS stop before the ball is hiked. You can absolutely play up to the snap of the ball. Anyway, I think *it was suggested* to the refs that they might want to say something about our band.

wellllllll I'm watching the UNH/Nova game and guess what? The UNH band is playing a FULL SONG during the 3rd quarter. They're playing "Hey Baby", a marching band staple, which takes.... i don't know, 2 minutes? They're playing the ENTIRE SONG DURING THE GAME. not between quarters. not at halftime. THE GAME IS GOING ON THE ENTIRE TIME. and take a guess which team is on offense? i'll give you a hint: it's not UNH.

i just found that funny and possibly ironic. i don't think it's anything malicious at all on the UNH band's part. just funny that it's UNH doing it.

Yeah but their band is like what 75 strong? Our band could sing it alone and be louder. 04-rock

I certainly will not criticize the UNH Band (especially since I have a number of students in it), but JMaddy is right - while I do think they are above 75 students (although I haven't seen them this year), they are hardly the size that will affect the outcome of a play.

(They are so much better than they used to be, though....)

You are correct that was a total bush league move, by Sean McDonnell in that playoff game complaining about the band noise........the funny thing was watch out what you ask for b/c after the refs made that announcement I have never heard BFS that loud and consistently loud for every play of that game.

Absolutely it was hypocrisy. But at the same time, there is absolutely no comparing a <100 member marching band to >400 member MRDs. Just stand in front of both groups and tell me there isn't a difference. Plus, the MRDs are also different than most bands in another way- each player is usually playing pretty loud. In a smaller group, many players can be a bit more timid, especially if the talent level isn't as high.
Add on to the fact that JMU puts the MRDs right at the endzone facing the field and good luck to any team trying to hear anything over a group that loud playing to your face.

I do remember that game where McDonnell complained about the band noise. It was awesome how it totally backfired on him. I've gotta think he was on the sideline thinking to himself "I wish I hadn't done that".
Lesson of the day: Don't mess with the MRDs.

Legitimately the loudest I've ever heard the stadium. The old fogies in our section get mad at us for standing and/or making noise. They were even yelling that day.

The crowd roar that happened after the ref announcement was spectacular. Have never heard BFS that loud ever. As a previous poster said, be careful what you wish for.

If a tree falls in a forest and there are no ears to hear the crash, does the tree falling make a sound?

If a band plays at a UNH/Nova game with no attendance does the band make a sound?

My understanding was that once the offense lined up the band had to stop, not all the way up to the snap. I think it was the playoff game against UNH when this happened, don't mess with our band!

Correct, NCAA rule is bands must stop once teams are set on the line.

RE: UNH Band: Oh, the Hypocrisy!
This reminds me of this years Stony Brook game where they used not only the band but also the stadium amped up speaker system to play loud music when we were on offense. DiNucci even got involved on one play as he stopped and looked at the referee and said something like: You got to be kidding me!

When the band did stop and the recorded music stopped, it still sounded like recorded loud stadium noise, and it wasn't coming from their fans in attendance.
