Tribe vs Furman
Just saw this announcement on another site. W&M and Furman have signed a home/home series in football for 2024/2025. The first game in 2024 will be at Zable.

RE: Tribe vs Furman
Not a bad opponent for us, a bit of a change of pace from the normal Patriot League schools

We used to have some big games with strong Furman teams when we were both in the Southern Conference. Nice to see this rivalry resumed: terrific scheduling.

Man, those mid to late 90s games vs Furman. Miss that. What I don't miss is them murdering us back around '99 or '00. Still the worst beating I've seen. Worse than any FBS game. Really please to see them back on the schedule.
Some of our more experienced fans must have some cool stories to tell about our games vs Furman in the 60s and early 70s.

RE: Tribe vs Furman
Good to resume old rivalries, but similar to VMI, most current students have never heard of Furman or most of the schools in the Southern. They are probably a better football team and such, a better game, but I bet the students skip this one. Patriot league teams are weak and not super exciting, but we pull MANY students who look at Bucknell/Lehigh etc. I wish we played Georgetown and Fordham. Those are more the sweet spot for name recognition. The students dont know that Georgetown is basically D3 within FCS.
I mean, looking at this graphic, you have to wonder, what if...

That is a real good graphic to show the overlaps. Thanks for sharing it.

Look I wanna play G'town too but Furman beats the hell out of the Campbell series.

Students hardly showed up for our Villanova game and they're 100x better than Georgetown or Fordham, a top 5 team and have at least as much name recognition as Georgetown and far more familiar than Fordham. 99% of the US couldn't tell you where Fordham is located.

Maybe youre right, but its nice to have away games inside NYC. Playing Columbia would do the same, but hey, why not both?

First of all, Georgetown stinks. I wouldn't play them even if they paid us like UVA to come play at Zable.
Second, if the students don't l know some of these schools, so what. Unless it's UVA, nothing else is going to make a difference. Why did they show up in some numbers for the Lafayette game? Is that more familiar than Villanova? No it's not. Villanova was family weekend, they were sitting elsewhere or doing other things.
At our level, Furman is an A+ OOC. The game in the early 90s was one of the best ever. Over 15,000 for a homecoming was about as loud as I've ever heard Zable. Our alumni marching band got a penalty or warning for noise interference at a key juncture which sent the crowd in full scream mode. Different times.

RE: Tribe vs Furman
The list of schools that were in the Southern Conference when we were members, along with the football only CAA members and schools who have participated in the ECAC D1 section in one or more ways generally provide pretty good coverage of OOC scheduling targets.

A very entertaining game. Wm & Mary both attempted and completed forward passes. Looks to have been 1990 with 38-28 score.
Looking forward, do you think the students would notice if Wm & Mary swapped out with UNCG to compete in a league where every member had to budget for both football and basketball?
Forgive me for such heresy. I know applications would decline dramatically absent the Hofstra and Maine rivalries.

I was at that game too. I remember the officials warning the crowd to not be so loud and I thought that was the most ridiculous thing that I ever heard. Your post today was the first time that I ever heard that it was the band that got the warning, not the crowd (which means that it finally makes sense).

I think that there are worse fates than a return to the Southern Conference, (ie Patriot, or a diminished CAA, sans JMU, Delaware, etc), depending on what the future holds.

The SoCon looked pretty good in hoops last year too.
While I'm dreaming, we can jump to the SoCon and bring Richmond back with us in a package deal.
Anyway, that's none of my business.

I like playing SoCon teams as a one off, but in terms of proximity to alumni fanbase, the current CAA is optimal.
