RE: Laughable Scores- College Basketball- November
There should be a limit on the number of road games played for D1 schools. For much of the game MVST probably had more talent on the court, but were clearly not that interested in playing defense or doing much on offense besides crossing midcourt and chucking a 3. That has to be a function of a never-ending road trip.

The Utah starters averaged 21 minutes played and scored 77 points. The bench had 66 points in 19 minutes. Freshmen scored 73, including 27 by guys (3) in their first game.

It's hard to feel bad for running up the score when it's being done by a bunch of walkons diving for loose balls, taking charges, running the court, and playin disciplined D, some of whom won't see the court for the rest of the year.

Sure, but I guarantee Utah wasn’t shooting with under 5 seconds to go on the shot clock and just playing normal defense. You can still play good defense without trying to steal the ball and press. Being up 50, there has to be some sort of awareness there. They’re not rivals, inexcusable

No press the entire game. MVST took 80 shots including 30 3PTA. Their center probably took a third of those and rarely made it inside either 3 PT arc yielding more attempted 3s than attempted rebounds.

MVST had enough possessions to have the ball the entire game. I don't know that they ran a half court set or made more than 3 passes on a possession the entire game. If they wanted to have a respectable game, they did nothing to indicate that, and pushed the tempo from the opening tip to the end.

We have a roster of 11 freshmen and no seniors. They need to gain some real game experience. A team was paid to provide that. Hopefully they got enough experience to not get run off the court vs Minnesota, but there wasn't much opportunity for real growth.

PS: they got tripple-doubled by what looks like a 12 year-old kid whose hair gets him to 6 feet and whose only adult-size physical feature are his ears.

Nicholls State downed Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center today, 75-70. The Colonels lost by 8 in overtime to Illinois on opening night, Tuesday. Could NSU be a factor in the Southland this season, or is Pitt in for another disappointing slog?

On Tuesday, the Penn Quakers turned a lot of heads with a 1-point road win against Alabama. Today, more heads were turned as Pennsylvania had its powdered wigs flushed down the toilet in Houston. Rice dominated the Red & Blue to the tune of 80-61! Utter shock.

Good catch Cutter. Cornhuskers look like they'll be akin to Rutgers football this hoops season. Shame too. For as little success as Nebraska has tasted in its basketball history, they've got some of the most loyal fans in the country.

The fans aren't going to be very patient if their big hire in basketball ends up being even worse than their big hire in football.

Edit: Their next game's against South Dakota State. Hard to believe they won't be 0-3 after that one.

Nebraska, if they really are that bad this season, is one of those metric cases to watch. Kind of like that rotten Oregon State team a few years ago, where being in the PAC padded RPI, if UNL truly stinks it up this year, and isn’t among the worst 50-100 programs metrically, it may point to the weighting of SOS in NET.

I know it's very early, but I haven't seen a team in the Big 10 that I would call impressive. This might be a long year for the conference.

I'm a Florida State fan, and the first time I saw them play in person was in March when they won Ja Morant's last NCAA game in the Round of 32. Florida State was expected to get worse, and they opened with a 63-61 loss at Pittsburgh. Now Nicholls State beat a team who beat a team who went to the Sweet 16 last season.

That sounds good, but it can't be done unless the NCAA will make up the revenue teams get for traveling to richer schools. If the NCAA limited road games and didn't make up the revenue, schools might drop sports and/or drop out of Division I.

Last season none of the top five conferences in the NET had a bottom 100 team. The AAC was sixth, and the P12 was seventh. The AAC had two bottom 100 teams that weren't in the bottom 50. East Carolina (10-21, 3-15 AAC) was 258th, and Tulane (4-27, 0-18 AAC) was 298th. There are 353 teams, so Tulane was 56th worst, and East Carolina was 98th worst.

The NET can't be calculated on your own, but the RPI can, and I multiplied SOS by 0.75 to get RPI values if the teams had lost every game. If they were winless, East Carolina would have been 337th (above 16 teams), and Tulane would have been 323rd (above 30 teams). Kansas, who had the hardest SOS, would have been 219th (ahead of 134 teams) in the RPI if they went winless. Morgan State, who had the easiest SOS, would have been 78th or 79th in the RPI if they went undefeated. The P12's worst NET was California in 229th.

I don't think they play much defense down in Itta Bena this year. From what you guys are saying, it sounds like they have five guys playing heroball and pretending they're Steph Curry. That's not exactly a recipe for success.

That's probably what needs to happen.

The NCAA should not subsidize schools that can't or don't want to spend enough money to have a viable Division I athletic department.

The NCAA should tell Division I universities: You have to find a way to generate the money needed for Division I athletics without making your UNPAID basketball players travel all over to play 13 non-conference road games a season.

You and I both know there's no way they would do that, especially to an HBCU. If you think the racially-loaded rhetoric behind their current arrangement is bad now, imagine what it'd be like then.

It is why some of them want to improve their image by looking for a better conference. I have seen more D2 schools play better ball than some D1 schools.

If you all REALLY want to see a crazy schedule, check at FAMU. They play in Hawaii, New Jersey, the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, etc. All of these are in a row and there's no geographical sense, they ping pong all over. Don't have a single nonconference home game.

While it may be true that conferences don't get bids, teams do, I do believe that conferences do get teams to those bids. That there is some respect given to conferences by way of the occasional iffy bid. It just doesn't seem possible metrically that the worst team in D1 could be in the same conference as the best one.

Not suggesting Nebraska is D1's worst basketball team. But, I suspect the metrics will uphold them not entering the conversation for ranking among the worst 100 teams. Even if they suck.

Missouri Valley Conference takes down the #1 ranked team for the 3rd time this decade. Twice Northern Iowa, once Evansville.

Evansville 67, Kentucky 64. Just saw that score flash by while watching Oregon-Memphis. Wow.
