I think losing a bowl game to a non-P5 is a non-factor in recruiting. Why? Because the likelihood is that if we play a non-P5 school, it will be in a fairly minor bowl game....like the MagicJack bowl or St. Petersburg bowl, etc..
Beating a decent P5 team in a bowl game can certainly help recruiting. Boise State beat Oklahoma in that memorable 2007 Fiesta Bowl and it really put them on the map with the big time recruits. They then won the 2010 Fiesta Bowl and the 2014 Fiesta Bowl.
Winning the Cotton Bowl cannot hurt recruiting, that is for certain. It is a New Year's Day Bowl game, great exposure, etc..

Boise has never attracted "big time recruits" - either before or after their BCS party-crash.
The 3 years prior to that first Fiesta Bowl appearance, the average ranking of their recruiting classes was #72. The 3 years immediately following, the average ranking was #73. The big win had no real impact on recruiting.
Since 2004, the Boise recruiting rankings have averaged #67 - with a best of #50 and a worst of #110. Their best year was last year. Ironically it was a few months after their First Responders Bowl game was cancelled for weather.
Bowl wins have had no significant impact on Boise recruiting. Bad example. There are just too many other challenges.
Could it have an impact at Memphis? Possibly. I would say a major bowl APPEARANCE is most likely to have a recruiting impact at Memphis - and not the actual result of the game.

Lost last year to 6-6 Wake Forest, P5 bottom feeder. Ridiculous.
2017 we had a damn home game as a bowl game and couldn't beat P5 bottom feeder, Iowa St. Riley Ferguson as a senior and we put up a whopping 20 points in our home stadium.
2016, we got our azz handed to us by a friggin CUSA team (WKU 51-31)
2015, embarrassed by 6-6 Auburn 31-10
lost 4 out of last 5 bowl games
yep and it still hasn't effected recruiting or playing in national TV games, so "Nobody cares anyway, they are just exhibition games"
I care when I spend thousands to attend and support the team.
If you don't win the bowl came they still call you the "loser"
You get a fun trip out of it, take the win.
