What we need to do is keep making good hires. This job should be super attractive to any up coming coach now. That is what Fuente, Norvell, and the administrative have done. That will be their legacy.

TBH he can't win a natty at OM, Arky, MSU, Illinois, or about any other of the 110 FBS teams that aren't bluebloods.

These are facts. There's only a handful of jobs that have the facilities, conference, and recruiting locations to justify national championship potential. LSU, Florida, Ohio State, Georgia, etc.

If Norvell is waiting for those jobs to open up, he might be here for a while longer. He's still under 40. I think that's the biggest benefit in our favor. He's still young enough to not be really chancing a retirement type job yet.

I think Norvell will eventually leave us for between 20-30 million guarantee to one of these retirement jobs. A job like Arkansas or UTk. A retirement job is any program that can no longer compete with the superior programs in their conference, but still have the fanbase and support to pay some one way too much money to win 8 games and go 3-5 in conference.

Memphis is in a good spot. We are one of the best programs in the AAC West right now, a pretty good conference. He are going to be able to replace Norvell with a quality coach.

All you old folks sitting on your wallets on the West side of the stadium on third downs must be protecting some money.

Pay up.

And we have to overpay for Norvell...

If we come in with the same number as a school in the Power 5 he likely leaves unless it is a graveyard job.

Given how bad the Hogs are, that place is turning into a dumpster fire and if Morris is still around in 2 years, I am thinking that the Hogs are not a program that could potentially poach CMN. CMN is in a great position to be ridiculously choosy about the next gig. Bottom feeder SEC programs are probably no longer on his wish list.

Agree. But I won't call it overpaying. He's worth every cent.

Correct. I think this is the case.

If he is a "grass is greener on the other side" guy he will leave. If not he will stay.

I personally would just enjoy the time he's here. Get your head right.

RE: What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
I think FSU's gameplan is to make Bob Stoops say no first, before moving onto other guys. I think Norvell is at the bottom of the next tier of coaches. PJ Fleck, Dave Clawson, Matt Campbell or some Clemson assistants will be considered due to P5 experience/championship pedigree.

At Arkansas, you have Alabama, Auburn, LSU and A&M every year on your scheduled. A great Arkansas team could still go 2-2 against those 4. There are some Ls baked into your schedule every year.

Dominoes are going to start falling soon. I don't think Norvell is going to be FSU's coach, but that is going to start some movement. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Rhule or Lincoln Riley jump to the NFL.

Norvell is comfortable and well compensated here. He can be picky. If the opportunity arises where he can compete at the highest level and for national championships, He'll go, no matter how much money we can put together, and I couldn't blame him.

We just need to remind other schools about his trips to Tunica. That should keep them away.

Herff, is that you? lol Nevermind.

FYI, Herff already did that last night--four times in a row as a matter of fact.

lol I have this strange feeling that those dudes don't pony up on command; besides which, they prolly prefer someone who beats the spread---every dingle time.

Correct. I think this is the case.

If he is a "grass is greener on the other side" guy he will leave. If not he will stay.

If CMN has an ego that needs to be fed, or he has a burning desire to "move up" then, there is nothing for us to do to keep him.

I get the feeling he is really attached to Memphis, this city and the program. He has got it rolling now and can really take it to an even higher level that where we are now.

If you watch the post game press conference, you will see, IMO, a genuine, sincere love for where he is now. He has minimal pressure on him and his staff. He is LOVED by the university and the city and the fans. He is in a great situation RIGHT NOW, and I can't think of any reason to want to walk away. Granted, I don't know him personally, but I know what I see from him in the public, and I just don't think moving on is a priority for him.

If you can't live comfortably on $3 million a year, then you got bigger problems. I would like to think of him as the Mark Few of college football. Plenty of opportunities out there, but he has it good right now. Why change.

hey, just ask Fuente how it working out for him?

RE: What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
3 reasons Norvell will probably leave:

A yuge offer. Like $5M with 4 years guaranteed.
Having to replace his staff over and over and over every year. It has to be draining having so many coaches poached.
The chance to win a NC. Even if it's theoretical (like Arkinsaw), you still have the chance to play yourself into the CFP - unlike the G5 jobs. Every coach has enough of an ego to want to compete against the best. That comes from the P5 because that's the only way to make the CFP.

It is what it is. I hope he's here for a decade, but I realize he won't be. Good news is that we're in the best position we've ever been to hire another really good HC. And we have another football guy as AD who is widely respected around the sport.

RE: What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
The good thing is, people want this job now. So we can pursue the HCs of other group of five schools if we so choose. We are in the best position we have ever been in to replace him should he choose to leave. I hope he doesn't. But it's not just 4 mill a year to worry about, but the competitive money for staff. I think if we get to 3.75, but have the staff dollars, we have a chance to retain him if we want. I think as long as his contract is competitive with what he is worth, he cares more about making sure he can attract a solid staff.

But if White is graduating, who does he have coming in at QB, and how excited is he about developing another kid from the ground up?

Everyone knows it's not about whether one is comfortable or not at a price point. These salaries become a reflection of how good a coach they are. Are they Tony Bennett, or are they Calipari? Most are somewhere in the middle, closer to Cal than Bennett.

Fans filling the Liberty Bowl for each Home Game, I believe this would go along way with Coach Norvell. He became emotional when mentioning how much he appreciated the fan support. Having a great program requires great fan participation.
