We really are in a great FB conference this year.

The officiating has been horrible for awhile

RE: The American
The American has done a great job of differentiating themselves from the other G5 leagues and justifying their ‘P6’ claim. We have some great teams, and the bad teams aren’t really that bad anymore. Losing UConn will boost the quality of the conference even further.

They really need to do something about the officiating, though. I don’t necessarily feel there’s a conspiracy theory against Memphis, but I do think they’ve made some horrible calls this year that hurt the conference’s credibility.

It's not been just this year. One example is bad officiating has been a huge factor in us losing to UCF the last 3 times we have played them.

The refs didn't make us false start 6 times or hit anyone out of bounds. A couple of the pass interference calls were BS, but most were pretty spot on. Not sure why our DBS never turn their heads at all.

The complaint I have is that I think only 1 holding call was called against SMU and there were some pretty blatant holds that I could see from Section 105.

Easy calls like the facemask, the obvious touchback placed at the 2yd line are inexcusable. So inexcusable, they appear to be intentional.

You forgot about the ref staring straight at the horsecollar/facemask that didn't call it, the SMU kick off return where they blocked 4 of our guys in the back and picked up the flag, the called back touchdown when the kicker was "blocked in the back" despite it not being such, the multiple other phantom PI calls, the called back TD run (I don't even remember what non-existent call that one was), and that was just this game.

Bad officiating is one thing, but this league has a tendency to do it many times over multiple seasons, often when it is critical to a game to get it right.

Oh man, I forgot about the touchback. Other than basically trying to rip Gainwell's head off only feet in front of the ref, how much more blatant can you get?

People are making a mountain out of a molehill with the officiating. Yes, the facemask/horse collar no-call was awful. And yes, there were a couple of phantom/ticky-tack PI calls. However, I went back and watched the game. There were a number of PI calls that should have been called against us that weren't so I feel it evens out in the end. Almost every play our guys are making contact with the receivers and failing to locate the ball. They could call it almost every time.

Dorceus' block in the back and the hold that erased Kenny's TD were the right calls IMO.

Except it's really not a mole hill. You can look at any one thing and saying, "pfft, stuff happens". But when you look at the totality of it, it's ridiculous.

PIs on us - none on them.
Holds on us - none on them.
3 tds called back.
Blatant facemask - in the age of "player safety".
Punt inexplicabley downed at the 2 after it ended up in the end zone for the first time in football history.

Then when you combine that with the Temple game - not irrefutable evidence to overturn.
Then combine that with last year's UCF game - 4 (or was it 6?) penalty flags on UCF picked up after official huddle with "no foul on the play".
Then combine that with the prior UCF game, etc.

And these are all high-stakes games, not just any old regular season game (like when Austin was ejected for targeting, at least that was UConn).

You are right about the UCF games last year. Something criminal was definitely going on. The conference stood to benefit greatly by protecting that NY6 spot.

The facemask/horsecollar was no doubt a bad no-call and the downed punt questionable.

You are wrong about the PIs. Outside of 1-2 headscratchers, the rest were legit. There were also several that could have been called on us that weren't. We had a pretty obvious one on their 1st possession that wasn't called and ended their drive. They were flagged for one on our 2nd drive. We had 4 PIs called. They had 4 PFs called. Looks pretty even to me.

The calls that resulted in negating the TDs were all legit. AG was down before crossing the goal line, Dorceus clearly pushed the guy in the back on the return and Eze had an obvious hold on Kenny's TD. And they were flagged for 1 holding penalty while we had 3. The rest of the penalties were all pretty even.

Furthermore, you are just flat out wrong about the catch in the Temple game, but keep on keeping on.

Yes Yes Yes. Someone knows football. If you look back and find the ball you are playing the ball and the ref can't call PI unless the receiver stops and even then you are both playing the ball and catch it with both hands, Mr Cornerback, Mr. Safety. TJ Carter was great at this, what happened to his technique? TJ Rushing is messing up our defensive backfield.
I still love the guys but the got to get that technique down. Those Idiot refs are looking for it and think they are justified in calling it.

You comparing PI's to PF's? That's a new one. PI's, much like holding calls, are true judgement calls. You want to call one on any play, you can. PF's, not so much.

As you admit, 1-2 of the PIs were headscratchers. Well, that a pretty big deal - and certainly not a mole hill. Even impartial Herbstreit admitted it. We had 4 called. They had 1 called. Leave the PF's out of the discussion because that is an entirely different thing. Late hits, face masks are not judgement calls. They're pretty hard to debate.

Not to mention Proche pushed off badly on his TD. If they're calling a ticky-tack PI game, then call it consistently and pull the flag on this.

The downed punt was more than "questionable" - it was flat out wrong.

Hard to believe we have fans wanting to pick this fight of defending these refs.

How funny is that for those pompous blowhards from UCONN?

Yes, the AAC will lose a bit of luster from Women's BBall (although with the scores UCONN runs up, not sure that it does), but the AAC actually improves with their removal from FB and AAC men's BBall is pretty much unaffected by UConn's departure. Pre-Calhoun, UConn was nothing. Post-Calhoun, UConn won it all in Ollie's first year (with Calhoun's players) and has been pretty 'meh' afterwards.
