What a blunder. If you're going to leak Stoops to your job, you sure better deliver on it. Now if he doesn't come, trying to sell boosters and fans on just about any other candidate is going to be an uphill battle. Fans are going to have the opinion of "why should I be excited about Mike Norvell - we wanted Bob Stoops?!?!"

Fleck is a 10 win coach at FSU. There are a LOT of undervalued guys that would do wonders at FSU.

Hell, give Willie Fritz (who reaches bowl games at freaking Tulane) the ACC resources of an FSU and watch him go...

You realize you're preaching to the choir, right? But if you promise a group of people filet mignon, then you're gonna get griping when you actually serve them perfectly prepared flank steak...

That's pretty much what the "experts" said about Willie Taggart. How did that work out for FSU?

If I were Frost, I would jump at this. He seems to be going nowhere at UN and is not recruiting at the same levels as the top BIG teams. He can recruit FL and does not have the weather constraints that the BIG has. It will not happen because he has ties. Too bad.

I think this is something being pushed by football alumni and it probably has little basis in reality. A Tallahassee sports reporter tweeted a text conversation from a former football player suggesting the idea.

How many football head coaches are there in college or professional that have no coaching (head or assistant) experience before? Even Joe Moglia had worked as an assistant after working 17 years at Merril Lynch. Penny Hardaway, whom many will use as an example for future head coaching openings due to his recruiting success, even had prior AAU affiliations and HS coaching experience.

Bottom line is, FSU administrators are working with their pants on fire right as we speak. They hired Taggert in what most of their backers believe was a precipitous way, and now they have fired him after just a season and a half.

If they can't pull a big chestnut out of this fire, like a Stoops (Bob, not Mike) or an Urban, they are going to get roasted.

It's not the university that is in trouble, its their jobs that are in jeopardy.

We'll find out soon enough if they get it done or not.

Think they could get Keith Urban as their coach?

FSU should have had someone lined up prior to the firing.

Penny and Deion are similar in that they both can recruit on name recognition alone. I also think that both are probably pretty decent at *coaching* players, as in teaching them to play well.

However, a football coach has two additional responsibilities that make it harder for an ex-player to jump in and succeed.

First, the x's and o's are a lot more complex and crucial in football. In basketball the x's and o's are usually overshadowed by the players themselves.

Second, a head football coach has the additional responsibility of running a large organization. There's 120 players and 30 or more employees. That's a much bigger challenge than 15 players and 5 employees in basketball.

Only if they are going to start playing Australian Rules.

Just my observation, but it's rare that exceptional players also become exceptional coaches.

Typically, a player with great natural talent has a hard time understanding the limitations of people without their same innate ability. It's not that Deion doesn't have a great work ethic or understanding of the game. It's a matter that if he really wanted to be a coach then he would have gotten into it years ago.

Coaching is something you tend to get into if you have a love and drive for the game that isn't accompanied by a great amount of success on the field. There are exceptions, sure, but they're rare.

RE: Florida State fires Willie Taggart
Coaching football and hoops are totally different. If i can recruit Jordan and Olajuwon to my team, i am going to win 30 games even if i have no coaching ability at all.

But a football team with Joe Montana and Lawrence Taylor on it can easily go 0-11. Football is far more of a team game and real coaching matters far more.

So if each is just a recruit magnet, Penny at Memphis has a much greater chance of success than a Deion at FSU.

+1,000,000!

You don't quit your job without another job lined up.

You don't fire your head coach without a replacement lined up.

Simple.

^^^ THIS ^^^

Gym rats like Larry Bird - they can sometimes make good coaches.
Naturally-gifted athletes like Michael Jordan - usually fail as coaches.

The first time the coach says something like "just catch the receiver from behind" to a kid that's not as fast as the guy he's covering... all credibility gone as a coach!
