No

I want a defense guy. A disciplinarian. Someone needs to whip them into shape

FSU needs to return to their roots, and that starts with PHYSICAL defense

Probably Willie’s too. He never has to work again!

If I were him, I would work at a mid-tier FCS school for $300k a year and be set.

Most contracts are written where if a coach is fired and gets a new job the new earnings are deducted from the buyout. Not that a small salary like that would matter much because he's getting his money no matter what, but it does give him the leeway to take a G5 job with little pressure and maybe work his way up back to a power school. Dude is only 43 after all.

$17M buyout. Let that sink in. There had to be something else going on off the field or in the locker room.

It is called FSU F'd up when hiring Taggart. Jimbo Fisher was a bad coach (waiting to see how long Texas AM goes with him) and left FSU with nothing. Taggart is a coach that seems to take time to make a winner.

(OT) Bowden really screwed up not going to the SEC.

Add salt to the wounds...

Quote:The Seminoles also paid Oregon a $3 million buyout when it hired him away from the Ducks in December 2017, as well as the remaining $1.3 million of a buyout that Oregon owed South Florida when it hired him in December 2016.

Big Bucks For Failure

This from the Orlando Sentinel...

Quote:Don’t kid yourself, Florida State University’s administration did not fire Willie Taggart on Sunday.

Florida State University’s boosters fired Willie Taggart on Sunday.

“I think very highly of Coach Taggart and wish him well, but in the interest of the university, we had no choice but to make a change,” FSU president John Thrasher said in a statement.

Translation: “Hey, we’re dead broke and getting broker. We’re just doing what the boosters tell us to do!”

It’s certainly no coincidence that ESPN reported Sunday that FSU raised about $20 million in private donations to buy out the obscene $18 million still left on Taggart’s inanely negotiated contract. The message that well-heeled boosters sent to FSU’s cash-strapped athletic department was crystal clear: You either take our $20 million and buy out Taggart or you’re not getting a penny more from us to pay for the swimming and volleyball teams.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how business is STILL done in big-time college athletics. The common belief coming into this season was that FSU’s tapped-out athletic program couldn’t afford to fire Taggart, but as it turned out the Seminoles couldn’t afford to keep him. Taggart was costing them too much in booster contributions, luxury-suite rentals and season-ticket sales to retain him.

First things first: Why was Taggart — a head coach with a career losing record of 47-50 — hired by FSU in the first place and given an exorbitant salary of $5 million per season? What did Taggart do to prove to Thrasher and former FSU athletics director Stan Wilcox that he would be anything except a below-average coach?

Secondly, if you’re going to hire Taggart, whose track record as a head coach shows that it normally takes him two or three seasons to get a program turned around, why would you then fire him less than two years into a rebuild? Sadly, Taggart, who grew up an FSU fan, thought he was taking his dream job and instead it turned into a nightmare.

I think I’m more shocked and disappointed in humanity that the school was able to get that money to buy him out.

He was no good for this program. People said it from the get-go. You could have saved yourself tens of millions of dollars listening to that crowd.

So many big problems in the world and within higher ed...money shows up to undo this kind of stuff instead.

I'd really like to see how Mike Leach would do at a school with the money and recruiting grounds that FSU has. He'd win 10 games a year there, with the only impediment being Clemson.

RE: Florida State fires Willie Taggart
Most FSU fans were optimistic with the hire. Early detractors pointed out his overall record, but most people saw the trend of him taking over struggling programs and building them up. I would have put myself in the cautiously optimistic camp. Taggart was a Florida guy, grew up loving FSU football, and genuinely wanted to connect with the players and the fans. Heck, he even donated $1 million right back to the university after he arrived. I got to meet him at a basketball game not long after his hire and left with a good impression. When you have a guy like that, you really want him to succeed, but there’s no doubt that this was the right move. A lot of people from outside the program look at this and say “he only had two years! They didn’t give him enough time. Progress takes longer than that.” Then they go on to assume FSU fans are unreasonable and want to win a championship off the bat in year 2 or something similar. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The fact is, this firing isn’t about not improving quick enough, it’s actually about worsening at every level of the program. Our schedule this year has been ridiculously easy compared to last year and the results have been the same. We have got 0-5 against our rivals with an average score of 40-15. The basic 101 coaching mistakes (not having enough players, illegal formations, calling timeouts before punts/game winning FGs) never improved. And yet, all of that probably would have been excusable if it weren’t the culture stuff. A lot of the talk with Taggart was fixing the culture of the program, something which definitely hadn’t happened, and in fact had probably gotten worse. Taunting players and fans, making illegal hits, players really just being selfish. It’s become a huge problem and is frankly really embarrassing. That’s why the change had to be made. Hopefully the next guy will be very strict and get the program back to at least being disciplined and respectable.

I'd say 95% of the outside opinions have no clue

FSU isn't looking to immediately compete for natties

FSU needs a disciplinarian, someone to clean up the locker room, clean up the penalties, make the team more PHYSICAL in the trenches.

IMO they need a Defense guy, someone that is going to chew this team's ass, bring back some Mickey Andrews attitude

They need to find a good strength and conditioning coach like Scott Cochran.

Basically they need to build from the bottom up

PS. Bring back the old uniforms and logo too.

Yes, that’s the problem here. Because the ACC hasn’t produced three champions this decade, including FSU.

Meh...Idk

FSU sorely needs a disciplinarian

Think more along the lines of Bob Stoops, Mark Stoops, Kirby Smart, Narduzzi

Very interesting choice! I can't remember why he was ousted so fast from Auburn

I’m not sure, but he turned UNC’s defense around very quickly. Then he moved back to Auburn where his family is (I blame Fedora). Tallahassee is much closer to Auburn than Chapel Hill.

It is crazy, isn't it? Boosters raise $20m just like that to buy him out, and all because they can't stand losing football games to Wake Forest and Miami.

It would probably take 3 years to raise that amount for a new cancer research lab, LOL.

Come on. The ACC didn't "produce" those champions. ACC football isn't like ACC basketball, where when a Virginia or Duke wins the national title you can say the ACC "produced" them, because competing in the rigorous ACC made them razor-sharp for competing in the NCAA tournament.

The only way one can say that the ACC helped FSU in the 1990s and in 2013, and Clemson the past 5 years, is in making it easy, via soft competitition, to have great records that made them well-rested for the playoffs. Not that they necessarily needed that, because they are very good teams, but it probably helped. But there was nothing along the lines of the conference schedule tempering their iron in to steel like it does in basketball.

The ACC does not 'produce' football national champions. FSU and Clemson produce their own championships, it's sheer coincidence they are based in the ACC.
