The Morning After
Not surprised at the outcome. You could see it coming like a cow looks at an oncoming train. I had hoped for better but we were bad where I expected us to be bad.

The defense played better than I expected. They really haven't been tested much this season but they stepped up and played well. Kudos to all but...Garrett Marino. The opposite of what senior leadership should look like. If it was one game I might feel differently but it's been an entire season. I agree with what somebody else posted in the game thread, I'm ready for him to be gone.

Not gonna dump on TJ3. Not sure if he's the answer at QB for the next two years but I think the biggest problem lies a step up the chain of command. We haven't improved at that position since Year One of The Return. Erdely threw for 16 TD's and only 4 INT's that year and we've gone downhill since. You can say the same thing for our running game. Brown's production had slowly declined before he was injured.

Coach Clark's influence on our defense is obvious. On that side of the ball I feel like we could compete in the AAC right now. I think he made a mistake in re-hiring Bryant Vincent as OC/QB coach. We've gotten worse instead of better. Sooner or later a change will be needed. It's holding our team back and will hold our program back if it continues.

RE: The Morning After
A reminder this game was a good practice for the rest of the season
The Sec oline didnt move UAB defense front except when they had obvious holding
With the defense we can beat anyone in CUSA (#1 neeed to behave when the play is over ),,,the offensive was poor because our qb had a bad game and he seem hurt from everywhere he can barely throw some short pass and he can barely run

The back qb show some skills at short pass and he can run ....his long pass were too long but nerve can explain that.
It is stange that we seem better without the starting qb and rb ????
Maybe recruiting have something to do
The OL was good except on obvious pass play
I am confident for the rest of the season

RE: The Morning After
A bunch of great points here, defense will carry this team. We rely too much on the backfield of TJ and Spencer Brown. I’ve thought this as far back as fall camp. Heck since Erdely nobody has pushed the starting QB. No true competition just picked a guy and ran him until he can’t take a snap two years straight. Offense needs to open up more and will if we trust what we recruited. No way the best recruit we ever signed has zero catches with this four game redshirt. Stanley is the best RB and Jermaine Brown is second best if utilized right we shouldn’t have to run a QB no matter if he likes it or not.

Was impressed some with Hop, kinda wish Lucy got a few throws cause he’s next in line maybe.

The Game went about as, I expected is their a injury report - should be better next week. Less time to find recievers and tighter coverage and speed.

RE: The Morning After
We haven’t played one game with the guys that we wanted to run out as the starting 5 on Oline. A couple of talented guys got hurt(for the season) in fall camp, then Alabama State abused their replacements who ended up getting hurt. I’m hoping we get some of those guys back because the depth in quality is not there and it shows big time. I’m sticking to the thought that we need to hire an actual Oline coach rather than a filler/culture guy. You don’t have to say that it was only an issue with WKU and UT. It’s been the glaring weakness primarily in the run game all season.

Clark being an All State Olineman in high school, you’d expect that this is where we’d be the most stout.

We seem to have weakened ourselves on that side of the ball with our last two hires. I get the drop off from last year after losing so many starters. What I don't get is why we seem to be worse than in 2017 when we only had one OL with college experience and a true freshman running back. Our rushing yards per game went from 180.5 a game in 2017 (against a tougher schedule) to 142.5 yards this season.

Passing stats since The Return:
2017 16 TD 4 INT
2018 18 TD 16 INT
2019 16 TD 14 INT

If we are serious about competing for the G5 bowl bid and getting in the AAC we have to fix our offense. Gonna take improved recruiting and improved staff on that side of the ball.

Who are the talented offensive linemen who were injured for the season in fall camp, and had to be replaced for Alabama State and havent played this year? Im looking at our roster, and at who has and hasnt played, as well as the spring game rosters, and am trying to imagine who those players are. Just curious. Thanks.

RE: The Morning After
I’m guessing the Alabama state game top guys on the depth chart as they have yet to play a game together which was

Ragland-Galten-Dufour-Smith-Wells

All but Wells has missed time, Wells and Jones RS are burned. Simmons has yet to show and Rykard got a game in couple weeks back.

Vardaman is one of 4 that went down in fall camp. That’s a likely starter. Clark said in WJOX interview(before opener) that we had lost 4 in fall camp, dropped from 15 to 11. Then down goes Galten in game 1. There’s no way to know what guys were hurt, been no transparency. I can’t find any participation lists either.

Gotta go game by game participation in the box score. That’s how I get my numbers.

Wasn't a big fan of Clark's comments in the post-game saying they basically didn't spend any time preparing for Tennessee. I understand he wants to focus more on the conference games and trying to repeat, but if we aren't going to prepare for Tennessee then why did I just spend my money to travel and watch that game?

Conference games are important and winning/repeating as conference champions is great, but there's something to be said about knocking off a P5 on the road (especially an SEC team). That's the kind of win that will really get the casual fan in Bham's attention and potentially help on the attendance front.

RE: The Morning After
It means that he we was to go full Clark then Dufour & Spencer Brown and others might get injured & be out for the season.

Almost cost us that Johnston stayed in the game until the 4th quarter.

I think he knew that the defense could do their part but the offense would have trouble.

i said it many time ,,,,that game was for money ,,we need to win conference USA ,,,,when we are better and we have a chance to go undefeated ,,,,that sec money game will be important ...right now we are playing it for money

The Southern miss is more important ,,they had 2 week to prepare for us
Tn show me that are not very good OR we are getting better players ,,,,they had the ball inside our 30 yards line most of the game and cannot do anything without the help of the ref ,,,,we look at lot better then 2 years ago when we play Florida ,,we lost both game ,,,,i didnt see a much better talent fron TN compare then 2 years ago at Florida

I disagree you play to win the game, all these games have the same amount of importance. P5 win would’ve been Clark’s signature win hands down .

It doesn’t look good in recruiting either to go up there and get smashed by a bottom dweller. Fairfield DT Reginald Perry that has us in his top 5, was on his OV to Tennessee. Way to make an impression on him.

Maybe he’ll see how hard our defense played and not the embarrassment we trotted out there on the other side of the ball. Gonna be even more tough to land him in December.

If he was at the game he had to notice that. We did not lose that game because of anything the defense did.

I understand your point but I am telling you now and i SAID it before
it was a money game even the coach tell us after the game ...trust me on this one
fyi
recruiting is done for next year and a lost can be use in recruiting ,,,,aka "you need better player like you etc and you may have a great chance to start "

Before the season most of us would have been happy with the current record at this point. I was arguing off board that 6-2 at this point was overly optimistic. Especially after the first week of the season

We have a realistic shot of finishing 10-2 for the regular season and hosting the championship game. In a rebuilding year. That is just nuts!
