I have to say, I agree with this. We all like to talk the conference talk--and I want to win a league championship as much as anyone. But when we talk about our great wins, the first one that usually comes out of people's mouths is our 2000 win over a mediocre LSU team--not the more important conference wins we have had, like beating 17th ranked East Carolina on national TV, or thumping TCU on that ESPN Friday night game, or beating a ranked Southern Miss team a few years back.

We also talk about how weak our conference is, yet we want to put all of our eggs in the basket of winning our conference, instead of making a statement to recruits and potential ticket-buying local fans who would put much more stock in a win over Tennessee than they would La. Tech or North Texas.

To suggest we didn't really prepare much for that game because it was JUST a money game was the one thing that Coach Clark has done in his tenure at UAB that embarrassed me.

I think he did the same thing last year in the first MTSU game, knowing we had a better chance of beating them the next week when we had everyone back. And, in the end, that turned out okay. I hope we sweep through the last four games of our conference schedule and he is able to come out with a big "I told you so." But I certainly don't like the idea of not going all out trying to prepare to win EVERY game on the schedule.

Plus...if we want to be the next Boise State, Central Florida, Houston, et al., then we have to beat the P-5 schools when we get a chance. Those schools gained their notoriety by lining up and beating the big boys. And when we get a chance we need to do that, especially against a 3-5 team. Winning our conference in and of itself, while nice for us since we never have done that before until last year, is not what is going to get you into the national discussion. And the fact that we are still in on some pretty highly ranked recruits, and in some cases our competition includes Tennessee,, means that you can't lay such an egg like we did Saturday night and expect to get those players.

so basically you would rather beat a SEC team and lose our conference. guess what Boise dominated their conference. you don't get to be the next Boise or UCF finishing third in CUSA west. conference championships matter a hell of a lot more than beating an SEC fan. recruits see conference championship trophies when they visit. that matters. they do not see trophies that we beat LSU or Mississippi State ten years ago.

Yet and still our biggest win in program history is beating Nick Saban. Not some G5 championship. It’s still talked about to this day, to casual fans it was a little conference championship. UCF beat the big boys and won their conference that’s the formula.

2000 LSU finished #22, just in case people want to act like that some average team.

To me beating MTSU last year was the biggest win in program history. It's awesome to say we beat some ranked conference teams over the years, and we got LSU that one time, but none of that means a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. Winning the conference, and then thumping a pretty solid team in a bowl game were both way bigger to me. I could be in the minority here, but those are the things that will matter more in the long run in my opinion.

Boise State & UCF did dominate their conference because that is what they expected to do. They didn’t put more of an emphasis on those games. They went out and tried their hardest to win every game on their schedule. That’s all we are asking UAB to do. If Clark doesn’t make that comment no one is really upset with him. We would all just be like let’s move to the next game and win our conference. But when our coach uses the “ we didn’t prepare during the bye week for them” as an excuse post game. It upsets me a bit, because what is the point of even saying that. Hey everyone we just got our butts kicked on ESPN, but it’s not really a big deal or my fault because we didn’t prepare for them during the bye week because the other games our more important. That’s really what you want from your head coach?

Boise State & UCF did dominate their conference because that is what they expected to do. They didn’t put more of an emphasis on those games.
