Couple of thoughts:

1). Binnelli is a real stretch 4. Best shooter on the team.

2). Miles Gibson appears to be a medical redshirt with an ACL. Noah Morgan is likely to start at '3'.

3). We have two recruits from Spire Institute in Ohio, one of those hoop factories.

4). Wooten is our ace recruiter and has tons of experience and contacts along the East Coast. Look at his bio and our recruiting... See a lot of connections to N.Y. and N.J.

Losing Gibson is a major blow to a thin front court.
Ballard may see some minutes this year.

I’m excited about Binelli. We’ve had one “big man” (if Jordan Nobles can even be considered that) who could reliably hit threes in Murphy’s entire tenure. Minnie took a bunch, but his percentages suggested that he probably shouldn’t have. If Binelli can hit 38% or better from deep, that would be a huge plus. His film is fun to watch; great stroke, and he gets it off quick.

After him...yikes. Let’s hope the new guards can run.

Game Week (MBB): Siena Heights
EMU has proven that a big front court means very little nowadays. Today's game is all about the shooters. Look what CMU did last year with a small team.

The real questions are does EMU have enough shooters and an offensive system that gets them open?

Good point. We still have size and length, just not as much. We look very guard-oriented, which may be a blessing in disguise (especially from an enjoyment standpoint). The odds are strong that at least one or two of Montero, Spottsville, Gibbs, Barnes, Morgan, Dillard, and James will be able to score at this level.

Some may even surprise us...Murphy’s eye for talent shouldn’t ever be underestimated. But, as you said, putting them in position to maximize their skills is where my expectations are low.

I'm also looking forward to Binelli most out of the newcomers.

In his interview on the EMU podcast this week, Murphy said he's been most impressed with Montero, Morgan, Spotsville, and Binelli. He also said Groce and King took big steps forward. Improvement from Jalen King is VERY welcomed and I will root for him... but I'm sort of in "believe it when I see it" mode with that claim. Hopefully he proves Murphy right.

Good stuff. If Groce can be more confident and assertive, it will go a LONG way. He’s one of the more talented players we’ve had under Murphy. The kid can do it all...he just needs to believe that he can. I hope Murphy is right. He is an easy kid to root for.

I agree with everyone regarding Murphy's eye for talent! When I watched their JUCO clips, Gibson, Binelli, Montero, and Morgan can play......Add a improved Groce, and King, and 7 footer in Toure, and this team might not be bad! Throw in Barnes who's the wildcard! Granted it was 4 years ago, but he was 1st team all state in California! Maybe Paris will have a great senior season! This team will have 9 players it appears! And, I think they'll will be hungry to play well! 6th place in the MAC west preseason...…….Spotsville, I didn't see much on his clips, just that he's quick!

Binelli can stroke it, but that was at the JUCO level! We need to run plays for him to shoot 3's...…...If we can get decent guard play, then this team will be athletic, and fun to watch! Nobles to me was a total bust, he averaged 3 points a game for his entire career! I hope Binelli can beat those stats!

RE: Game Week (MBB): Siena Heights
I thought Nobles filled a role, and he did it well. He played good D at different spots of the zone, and he hit corner threes at a good percentage. We missed him a lot last season.

With Steve’s info that Morgan will start at 3, my best guess is that Groce will come off the bench (as others have mentioned). Montero, Binelli, and Toure seem like safe bets to start, which means the last guard is up in the air. Parris? Spottsville? Barnes? Luckily, we have 3 non-D1 games to tinker with what works. One of the rare times I’m happy that those games are on the schedule, considering how new our team is.

Nice piece from Goricki, per usual.

-This all but confirms our starters will be Spottsville, Montero, Morgan, Groce, and Toure.

-A very transparent quote from Groce: “This team is much more unselfish than last year. We all look to play off each other and make each other better. We look to facilitate much better than last year.”

-Murphy mentioned “implementing a system”, which hopefully means a new offense that maximizes the strengths of a team with a bunch of shooters and one true big on the court at all times. We’ll see if anything changes.

I'll admit I'm very intrigued about this team.

I saw the promo video and Ty did look bigger and in great shape. The article says he gained 15 lbs. Looking forward to seeing him (hopefully) have a great season.

We'll see if BOTH the offense and defense adapt to their different talents.

Same. Maybe it’s the “unknown” of it all, but I’m excited to watch the opener on Friday.

Murphy specifically mentioned the zone, so I don’t think much will change defensively. Maybe we will press more, with the smaller lineup. Having big guards will be nice for the zone too.

We actually do have some intriguing mid-major matchups this year as well.

UC Irinve and Northeastern are expected to be top mid-majors nationally. UMBC will compete for their conference title again. UNLV is a great brand. And Valpo actually just beat Toledo last night, so they may be better than expected in the Missouri Valley.

I like the last part of the article! E Mich can win the MAC if Toure averages a double double, Groce scores and rebounds, and Binelli wins 6 man of the year! Dream big
boys! BGSU did last year!

I agree we missed Nobles length in the zone, but offensively he was a liability! Averaged 3 points a game over his career! You can't win the MAC with those numbers if they're a starter, or 6th man! Groce is built the same way almost as Nobles, but Groce is A D1 player! Nobles was marginally one in my opinion! I'm sure you'll not agree!

Plus a revenge game against U of D. I like our OOC schedule. We get most of the non-D1 games out of the way quickly, and the Jamaica tourney will be a great early test. Most importantly, only one true “paycheck” game against MSU. That one will be ugly, but I think we have a chance to be competitive in every other game.

Rules changes:

International length on 3 point line.

Also in the front court offensive rebounds reset the shot clock to 20 seconds.
