That's all I heard on the radio station out of Tally this morning that he was already there and talking.

FSU - They took an up and coming AAC coach (I know, indirectly from another school, but still) and didn't even let him finish his second season. I think their alumni will be looking for a big program coach and they'll throw money around to get it done.

USC - They want results yesterday. He'd have to have an instant turnaround there, plus money is always a consideration. Yeah, So. Cal is nicer than the Memphis area but between cost of living and taxes, even a bigger paycheck from So. Cal may not be as enticing as it appears.

Moo State, Ole Miss, Arky - Almost seems like a step down. Norvell can compete right now and position Memphis to get into a bigger conference at some point. Those mid-level and bottom feeder SEC programs? Other than getting SEC money you're basically living in Podunk and you aren't winning much. And seriously, the best thing about Starkville? Being able to leave and drive to Memphis.

Miss St is in danger of losing their head coach to Rutgers. dafuq?

Miss State coach in is danger of getting fired.

Grave danger?

Is there another kind?

Or he can continue to groom us for a potential expansion slot if someone like the Big12 decides to expand. I like that idea better.

If he gets a chance to coach at a big time school in a P5 conference he'd be better off taking it though. He'll never compete for a NC here unless the above fantasy scenario becomes a reality.

Will he ever really compete for a national championship if he goes to any of the 30ish schools in the bottom half of the P5 he still doesn’t have a realistic shot at competing for a title.

Only 10 teams have competed in the CFP in 5 years. Only 15 played in the BCS Championship in the 15 years before that.

Only 19 teams in the last 25 years.

If I knew I was a really good coach, there are a few ACC jobs I would take. The ACC is wide-open and mostly a crap football conference. Your only obstacle is Clemson. That is one of the reasons I am disappointed with Fuente... that should have been a really good job for him.

I want to agree.

But how many of those 19 teams are from the G5? That is the problem.

Are the other 70% of P5 teams really that much closer to playing for a title than we are? There are plenty of reasons for Norvell or other coaches to take P5 jobs. I’m just not sure a chance to play for a national title is as legit a reason as most of us believe it is.

Exactly. PJ Fleck took the Minnesota job knowing (1) Minnesota has a 0% chance of winning it all (low talent state, bad facilities, poor fan support, head to head competition with the Vikings) and (2) it was a very good job to take and eventually move to a premier 'top 19' (as in competing for a NC) job. Matt Rhule (spelling?) is doing the exact same thing at Baylor.

Fleck and Rhule look like they are doing all the right things on their way to a top 19 job, like a Michigan, USC or Florida State. Think about that:

In this year alone, there are 3 top of the line, National Championship-caliber jobs likely to be open: Michigan, USC and Florida State.

Last year, there was 2 such openings (Florida & Florida State) and another 'kind of opening' Ohio State. Maybe you could say 3 with Texas A&M (I know they haven't competed for a NChampionship...but the $$$, the conference, the crowd support and the in-state talent are all there).

Two years ago, there was 2 such openings (Texas and Oregon).

That said, Norvell can be very, very picky (like Hermann) and choose which job he might. And, Arkansas is earning a reputation as a place you do NOT want to go to, as is UT. Both are located in low talent areas and UT has not had a great track record of recent coaches.

Truthfully, I could see Norvell take the Moo U or Ol' Myth jobs and use it as a stepping stone to a big time job, just like PJ Fleck, or Matt Rhule.

Hopefully not, hopefully another 3-4 years here of this type of performance would lay the groundwork for his successor.
