We won the 2014 conference championship. I have the shirt and have seen the banner.

We ended the year in a 3 way tie at 7-1 with Cincinnati and UCF, there was no championship game, they lost their bowl games and we won ours, so OK. Not the same thing.

It's more than that. Looking back from this distance, yeah, it looks like a 3-way tie. But upon closer inspection, we KILLED Cincinnati 41-14, our "co"-champion, and oh-by-the-way... UCF didn't play EITHER of us. No, we won that conference championship, and no one can tell me otherwise. There is a reason WE were sent to the Miami Beach Bowl as the Champion representative from the AAC.

FSU just showed they will fire you after 1 and a half seasons. Most coaches won't like the look of that no matter how much money they make. Coaches want to build a winning program.

FSU did not create a deterrent to hiring future coaches by firing after 1 1/2 years of what they had to watch. Most coaches would have the ego that loves the challenge to show they are better than the guy who got fired. They have the egos that appreciate cornerbacks, safeties, and wide receivers abilities to forget the previous failure.

Its much harder in the ACC, SEC, B10 to win anything, unless you're Clemson, Alabama, etc.

There are only about 20 jobs out of the over 200 that will get you in the 4 team play offs, everybody else is just playing second fiddle, season after season, decade after decade. Mississippi has never even played for a conference championship and probably never will.

He's making millions, MILLIONS, and is working hard and having fun and appreciated here, and this side of 3-4 losing seasons in a row, will never lose his job. His life would probably be better staying here for 10 more years, he'd still be young, 10 years from now he's 48.

If he's a championship level coach, wait until then, there will be an opening. At 48 he can land at an Alabama or Ohio State and have the knowledge and experience to make it happen. If he leaves now and fails to really win big, he's fired and will still never have a chance to do better than he can right here.

Yep, the jobs he would leave for, he would leave for regardless of the money (of course those jobs would pay well anyway). If Alabama called right now and said Saban was going to retire after this season and they would pay him 3mil a year, no amount of money we offered would keep him here.

I agree with that, but I don't understand that mentality. That seems like a circus I would avoid like the plague. Could you imagine what Nick Saban's average day is like? No thanks...

Oh yeah, neither would I, but people with personalities like Saban at the very least can contain it. His attitude lets you know just how far you can go with him, which isn't very far.

But, that is one of the reasons I can never be against the 1%. If I were Fred Smith with Fred Smith money, I would have retired about 20 years ago and been traveling the world and living for enjoyment. People like Fred Smith are why the rest of us have jobs. My employment would be tipping the cocktail waitress on the beach.

That's a great point, never really thought of it that way. I have always known I didn't have "it", but I still never understood why $20,000,000 doesn't send them to the beach. But I guess that's part of "it".

Kind of a weird dynamic has shaped up with this divide between the P5 and the G5. Both factions have the have's and the have not's. One lake is bigger than the other, but they both have big fish and little fish. Do you want to be a little fish in the big lake (Arkansas), or would you rather be the big fish in the smaller lake (Memphis/UCF/Cincy etc.)?

Before the divide, all G5 schools were little fish in a big lake. Now G5 teams can be big fish in a smaller lake. At least they can be big fish (Gameday, marquee game).

RE: Norvell
If Helton loses his job, I worry about USC. CMN came from the Pac12 and knows the conference and the fertile recruiting territory that California has. It is truly one of the top jobs in college football, but it also has fans with really high expectations, so there will be tremendous pressure for them to return to winning national championships. I have no inside information on what his intentions are, but I think he is smart enough to bide his time and wait for an opportunity like that than take a P5 offer from a less prestigious school, e.g. utk and even Arkansas where he has roots and has already snubbed him.

I regarded us as the best AAC team that year too, I believe that more years than it is true. I also think that we'd have won the championship game that year. There was no championship game.

At this point no one knows and really have no idea of Norvell's thought process but let's take a look at some of the programs everyone keeps mentioning.

FSU - They took an up and coming AAC coach (I know, indirectly from another school, but still) and didn't even let him finish his second season. I think their alumni will be looking for a big program coach and they'll throw money around to get it done.

USC - They want results yesterday. He'd have to have an instant turnaround there, plus money is always a consideration. Yeah, So. Cal is nicer than the Memphis area but between cost of living and taxes, even a bigger paycheck from So. Cal may not be as enticing as it appears.

Moo State, Ole Miss, Arky - Almost seems like a step down. Norvell can compete right now and position Memphis to get into a bigger conference at some point. Those mid-level and bottom feeder SEC programs? Other than getting SEC money you're basically living in Podunk and you aren't winning much. And seriously, the best thing about Starkville? Being able to leave and drive to Memphis.

Have absolutely no idea but just as a discussion, USC would be worth the risk

An all time program
Never far from being the best in the PAC 12 South let alone the PAC 12

I understand the kids really like Helton and I hope he is their coach next year with more wins

Pete Carroll did very well there and Norvell reminds me of a younger him

Would love for our coach to want to make Memphis into a Miami, but Miami was able to play for titles and we basically are not.

Literally no one disputes that Memphis won the 2014 AAC championship.

Literally nobody.

Aresco and crew were at the Liberty Bowl the night we beat UConn to close the season.
