WAC basketball week 0 (exhibition week)
GCU won 87-60 tonight over D2 Cal State San Bernardino. Northwestern transfer guard Isiah Brown looked impressive scoring 26 points. Carlos Johnson is continuing where he left off a season ago scoring 23 points. Lever tallied 15 points and 13 rebounds but he struggled at times defending CSUSB's butterball undersized big man Andres Villa (6'5, 275-lbs); who hails from Deming, NM. Villa was deceptively quick and a wide body who could out leverage Lever at times. As for the rest of GCU's players, freshman Javon Blacksher stood out and shows a lot of potential; tallying 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Oscar Frayer did not suit up tonight. And, St. John's transfer guard Mikey Dixon is not eligible until after the fall semester. It is still unclear if Jaylen Fisher is cleared to play this season? GCU played 8 scholarship players and two walk-ons tonight. GCU has a solid guard rotation but it is unclear how the Lopes are going to dominate the boards and defend the paint; lacking size and depth in the front court. GCU will be an interesting team to watch this season. GCU should be guard strong with Brown, Johnson, Blacksher, Rhymes, and Dixon... and Fisher if he is available. But if Lorenzo Jenkins, Louis Bangai, and Bryce Okpoh can step up and contribute in the front court along side Lever and Frayer then GCU could be a dangerous team. Just an assessment on my part. Still a lot of question marks early on.

I'm not counting on it. Feeling less confident about a waiver coming through for Fisher every day that goes by. And what on earth could a senior 3 year starter (Frayer) need a waiver for other than academics? Already down 2 and that is without the inevitable 1-2 injuries that inevitably hit throughout the season. Looking like this team will be short and short-handed all year long. Appreciate the optimism. It just looks a little different from where I sit.

Agree with Leadley here. I am not optimistic. At present we have serious problems in the front court. Plus time and time again I asked on here if Jaylen Fisher was good to go and people spoke with seeming authority saying he was. Fooled me.
It is going to be a long season if the team on the floor is the team we have moving forward.

All I know is that he did not play in the exhibition game. Not sure why.

On the telecast Barry said that it was an academic issue. Also why wasn’t JJ rhymes more of factor? Lots of hype without a lot of performance. I like what I saw of Brown and Jenkins though.

RE: WAC basketball week 0 (exhibition week)
My Aggie brother Pistol is always optimistic about our WAC opponents which is commendable. That being said GCU is always hyped a lot but reality of the real season always hits them. I guess its cool for them to make it to the championship game the last two seasons but 2nd place is not something to celebrate about. That being said I'm really worried about the Aggies as well. The injury bug has hit hard. AJ Harris was a huge huge loss. IMO he is the heart beat. He killed UNM when we played him and you cannot replace his outside shot and quickness with Shunn Buchanen. Jans sounded really really negative and down on the team with injuries and other players progress in the first press conference which makes me worried. Its disappointing especially since both UNM and UTEP look better and that road game vs. Arizona. I think we lose more than one game this year in conference with all the injuries. We win the WAC again but not as easily as the last two seasons.

Somebody suggested it might be related to a Progress-Toward-Degree waiver, but there is obviously no way of knowing if that's true or not. On the linked document, the section labeled "Student-athlete entering final season of competition (credit-hour deficiencies only)" is a best-guess at what it might be, if his waiver is at all related to PTD. There are a bunch of criteria listed, but no idea what it all means.

I'm not worried. This team is too talented to not win a lot of games this year. If we lose 4 or 5 during our non-conference part of the schedule it's going to be because teams like UNM and UTEP are improved, not because we lost AJ.

UVU beats D2 College of Idaho 59-42 tonight. UNLV transfer guard Trey Woodbury scored 18 points. Neither team shot the ball well.

UVU shot 9% from 3 last night (2-21). 2-12 in the 1st half and 0-5 in the 2nd half.

Averette was ice cold 1-9 (0-7 from 3). This is more than likely just 1 bad game than anything close to a trend. Possibly trying to hard for the UVU fans? I know that him and JJ at GCU we very underwhelming in their debuts for their new schools.

Utah St also dropped 103 points on C of I as well.

Cal State Bakersfield beat Westcliff 90-49 yesterday. Taze Moor led the way with 20 points. However, the Roadrunners shot only 1-13 from three point range. I wonder if the new arc distance is separating the men from the boys when it comes to true shooters?
