: Bearcats likely controlled their own destiny for a new year's 6 bowl before. With the app state loss they definitely do.

Baylor scrapes by 17 - 14. They aren't top 15.

Next to go is SMU.

I agree. I think there are three schools remaining that can control what happens. UC, SMU & Memphis

UC is clearly getting some help in this magical season with App State and Boise both going down to unranked opponents. But I also think the Bearcats can only afford one more regular season loss to hang in there for the Cotton Bowl.
And if it has to happen it better be to a ranked team on the road (Memphis) or it could get dicey. I feel Memphis will take SMU down this week and if UC takes care of business our 'Cats will be the highest ranked G5 team come Sunday afternoon.

I have no love for Baylor, and I didn't watch the game. But UC had close calls in '09 to go undefeated; snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Ohio from the MAC last season and had an uninspiring win last time out against Tulsa. It's a long season and even the best teams (Oklahoma) come up short if they lose their edge.
Let's hope UC's newfound success doesn't create complacency against inferior opponents the next two Saturdays.

Memphis going absolutely gaga over this week's game and ESPN setting up shop.
I think they ride this emotional wave to a convincing win against SMU in front of the whole nation, which...
… sets them up for a big letdown when we roll in there. There's no way they can capture this magic twice so close together in a season.
I hope.

I don't know that I'd count on that; it may be the same month but there's 3 weeks of games between. If anyone is going to be primed for a letdown it would more likely be us since we'll probably be rolling in after clinching our division at home the week before. Not to mention Memphis is likely the better team.

This is one of a few reasons why I want SMU to win this weekend (and win out until the CCG):
1) I don't want to play Memphis two weeks in a row. Beating a team twice in a row is hard.
2) I don't want to have the CCG at Nippert. Yeah I realize this sounds crazy, but given that the Shootout starts a couple hours after kickoff I don't trust our fan base to pack the stadium for game that will be broadcast on ABC.
3) Beating an undefeated SMU in the CCG on national TV at their place will be a national story. Plenty of exposure for the Bearcats.

I think SMU is smoke and mirrors and Memphis is really good. They were going to truck SMU even if they played in the parking lot at 8am with no tv coverage.

I think we need to get out ahead and stay out ahead in the G5 rankings.
If SMU stays ahead of us, even if we beat them in the CCG, then it will come down to a beauty contest between us and Boise. Not saying it should be that way, just saying that it will.

Correct, but I think a win over an undefeated SMU provides another bullet in our chamber in that beauty contest. We already have a tougher SOS to harp on, not to mention a better head-to-head to point to (52-14 win over Marshall compared to their 14-7), and our L is not as bad as their loss over a mediocre BYU (who lost to USF, who we will have beaten if we win out).
This being said, as Rath points out Memphis is really good. They will be playing at home in front of 59,000 fans on primetime. It will tough for the Mustangs to pull it out this Saturday.

They're both smoke and mirrors IMO. Memphis was lucky to survive Tulsa, as was SMU. Granted UC's win against Tulsa was not impressive, it was still a double digit win even with the crap performance of the offense that day.
SMU is living life lucky, with their best WR out, their offense took a huge hit - Houston couged it, they had SMU beat and good old captian skullet blew it.
Memphis is only as good as the defensive front seven they are facing off against. If Brady White is under any pressure at all, their offense is mediocre at best.
The SMU wheels will finally fall off - if not tomorrow, Navy gets them at home late November in what could be a nasty weather game favoring the home team.
If there was a team I would not want to play, it's UCF. Both SMU and Memphis dodged that bullet. Thankfully UC got them early and at home.

Memphis has a ton if talent and I don’t know if it’s coaching or what but there is a switch that if they turn on they are incredible and if they don’t they are Miami(Oh)
