Pesik, Cumberland is healthy has been practicing for about the last 10 days. Jeremiah Davenport (who has apparently looked great) and Trevor Moore also returned this week.

Thanks for posting.

That's a great Twitter feed for Temple fans to check out.

Temple is showing a whole new and more energetic look with McKie at the helm. McKie is a much more charismatic and personable guy than the prior HC. That could be a difference-maker for the team.

Grant Sherfield's birthday was during the scrimmage, i think he started as like a present because the scrimmage and his family was there..

any word if he legitimately jumped burton?

I don't think he has jumped Burton. Yet....

Burton had to have some dental work done and missed a week of practice and as far as I know also the scrimmage against Nebraska. I think this may have been easing him back in as much as anything.

From a few of Marshall's quotes this year I think he would be thrilled if some combination of Sherfield and Fernandez (Fr PG) could take the bulk of minutes at PG at some point this year which would allow him to have Burton back up at PG and spend the rest of his minutes at SF. Marshall has had good things to say about Fernandez but he has been out with a foot injury and there's no telling when we will see him on the court.

kelvin sampson from yesterday
https://www.thehrr.com/Houston_Cougars/m...years.html

- our strength has been depth last few years, that will be the case this year aswell..5 deep in good guards, 2 deep at 4th, 3 deep center..that doesn't include ced allley who will play but versatile and could play either wing or big
- with the size of team (big guards, dribbling big) we can go really big or small ball

- fabian white went from 6'6 195..to 6'8.5 230 the last 2 years.. drastically improved his skills aswell

- freshman J'Wan Roberts-- deciding whether to redshirt-elite rebounder but the rest of his game needs work

I would think redshirting Roberts is a no brainer. Sounds like the only real playing time hed get would be garbage time or foul trouble situations. Let him develop his game and he can have Chris' minutes next year.

Little more info coming out of the scrimmages.

Dooley on Newton at the PG spot with the other two down....

“He hasn’t turned it over,” Dooley said. “He’s been poised. I do think he’s got a good feel for things and I think the biggest thing he needs is experience and strength, and those are things he’s going to get early in the season, especially experience.”

If Newton was decent protecting the ball it's a good sign. For Wake Childress was 10th in the ACC in steals and 16th in steal percentage. White was a top 5 steals percentage guy in CUSA for 3 straight years so they had multiple ball hawk guys that would cause him problems with turnovers.

Also from Newton's statistical record in high school he really didn't turn the ball over at all even as high as his usage was

Sr....38ppg and only turning it over 2.9 times a game.

If you want reference for other high scorers vs turnovers on other levels. Harden isoed more than anyone in NBA history and he averaged 36ppg but 5.0 turnovers per game.

In previous years when Newton was tasked with more passing he was awesome as well and had a solid assist to turnovers even with a lot of scoring burden too.

Jr...28pg 4.7apg ....2.7 turnovers

So 22ppg 4.2apg...1.9 turnovers

That's a 2 for 1 assist to turnovers average those 2 years while averaging about 25ppg as well on insane usage.

There is a good amount of reason to believe he can protect the ball well.

Wasn't one of the complaints about Mick weak non con schedules?

How much of this schedule is a holdover from Cronin and how much is on Brannen?

its a mix.. the big home and homes were micks (ohio state, tennese), mick also responsible for the weaker tournament .. but where mick would have likely put easy buy games for the rest, brannen stacked them with monster buy games (vermont, drake and colgate, who are all favorites to make the tournament and win their conference)

a better tournament and they likely have the #1 schedule in the country

Overall yes, but Drake isn't favored to win their conference. They were picked 5th and around 150 in KenPom

UC has their exhibition tonight. Playing a local DIII school so the game won’t really tell us anything but should be fun to watch all the new guys.

RE: *** Basketball News Thread (Part 4) ***
today was Houston's media
kelvin Sampson

- true soph Nate Hinton is the captain/leader of team. has inherent leadership skills. It comes easy to Nate.
- "I think this team has potential. This team could be pretty good."
- doesn't have to recruit on vision anymore, we've grown, can recruit on accomplishment --appreciative to players who came on nothing

- armoni leaving was a surprise to staff, Sampson was extremely high on houston with Armoni and wouldn't have recruited grimes or anyone had he not defected..had to scramble to pick up depth in june-- lucky to have grimes come along
- the culture at houston has got grimes a lot tougher and he still has to continue growing -- Grimes had 8 assists and 8 rebounds in the scrimmage vs texas tech- Kelvin says he wouldn’t have believed that a month ago

-- dejon has been injured missed a lot of practice/scrimmage (minor hand ijury)

--freshman marcus sasser continues to surprise { had 2 20pt games in italy}, sampson says was probably the best player in the texas tech scrimmage-- that you shouldnt base too much on these recruit rankings on who is good/bad and have it be your end-all

- loves his top 5 guards (strength of the team), says minute distribution and order of those top 5 guards might surprise people --

- ced alley is a Swiss army knife, good at alot of things, not great at anything, calls him the "gorilla glue" of our team

- we arent a good 3pt shooting team- goes on a tangent about how many players are having their confidence built up by their coaches telling them to "keep shooting", when they shouldnt, he doesnt want the confidence built up of a bad shooter

- this years team right now is not as good as last years team in february, march..
- with this teams makeup says this team will be hard to play against and difficult match up for some teams

Players

- understand we are the hunted, we embarrassed some teams last year, they have gotten better and will bring everything they have at us, we have to expect that and get that much better

Sadium: Jeff Goodman’s Top 102 College Basketball Players for 2019-20
https://watchstadium.com/news/jeff-goodm...0-30-2019/

7. James Wiseman, C, Fr., Memphis
15. Jarron Cumberland, SG, Sr., Cincinnati
57. Quentin Grimes, SG, So., Houston
79. Precious Achiuwa, PF, Fr., Memphis
87. Laquincy Rideau, G, Sr., South Florida

also there is a 15minute stadium video feature on memphis in article with a penny interview/practice football

things worth nothing from penny interview:
- injuries will define memphis season
- says him in his prime with this team wouldnt go undefeated- going undefeated is hard but they would be favorites to win title
- goodman tried to insinuate other aac coaches were disrespecting him picking them tied for 1st...penny says people saying that are are underestimating our league..being tied for 1st is a good thing
- says aac is a older physical league and memphis willl struggle some with that on the road with freshman, so he understands being tied for 1st
- goodman insinuates memphis is not a good 3pt shooting team..penny immediately says he doesnt agree..memphis will play 4 top shooters (lester, boogie, hardaway, harris)
{note he says his son will pay as a rebuttal to no shooters for those saying he wont play
