Izzo doesn’t usually get the one-and-done guys because he always gets beat out for them. Jabari Parker, Tyus Jones, Devin Booker, Vernon Carey...I could go on and on.

He’s tried hard to bring that level of player to MSU, but usually falls short. My theory is that it has a lot to do with his in-game antics of screaming in players’ faces. You don’t see Coach K, Bill Self, John Calipari, or coach in the NBA do that kind of stuff. But when he does get that level of talent, like Jaren Jackson Jr, Gary Harris, or Miles Bridges, they usually leave after a year or two and get drafted high.

For perhaps just once Sam, I disagree with you. You are correct, he did not compete with one and done schools like Duke, Kentucky and Kansas but Izzo constantly out recruited U-M's Bielien for years, much to my amazement.

For example Izzo got the state's prize recruit Miles Bridges four years ago. He had a very promising freshman year, remained in school and subsequently cost himself a whole lot of money when he did not perform as well as a sophomore. Bielien, by contrast, recruited DJ Wilson at the same time who was regarded at best a "prospect", most in Ann Arbor thought he was a D2 player. DJ, however, blossomed and was off to the draft after one impressive year.

I have no explanation for why so many of Bielein's kids left early when Izzo's did not. Jordan Poole leaving after just two years? Hats of to Izzo for keeping the kids there as long as he does. I'm not sure it helps them though.

I’m confused.
For comparison sake, Bielien recruited DJ Wilson in the 2014 class. Izzo got Bridges in the 2016 class. However, you’re painting the picture as though they were recruited at the same time. Two years is half a lifetime in college sports.
Also, from 2010 to 2019, 12 Bielien guys got drafted. During the same time, 8 Izzo guys got drafted. Did Izzo really consistently out recruit Bielien?

Keith I respect your opinion very much. Please don't use the metric of NBA draftees to evaluate the recruiting efforts of these coaches. Mo Wagner, DJ Wilson, John Teske and Duncan Robinson were all awfully lightly regarded when they arrived in Ann Arbor. Bielien, however, developed them into NBA prospects, he worked well with prospective talent. Izzo, by contrast beat Bielien for nearly every 5 star Michigan player, save Isiah Livers. I'm not disparaging either coach. Izzo started with more talent, developed it less, but kept them in the program longer. That formula has worked well for him and Bielien's not as well.

That assumes high school hoops gets played in the fall which like college hoops remains an iffy proposition. I had tickets to see the Doobie Brothers in Grand Rapids on August 1 and this has been moved back to September 21, 2021.

That kind of schedule is hardly conducive to a rigorous academic schedule. I suppose the "prep" in Ypsilanti Prep is now clearly defined as something besides college studies.

The school's guidance counselor will be sports agent.
