Should Zion Williamson make a mint while a star at UBuffalo make chump change for his likeness.
If I were a high school FB player I want to go to Ohio State.
Steve I agree. Dan is very passionate on this issue and I can sympathize with his concerns, Zion made a huge amount of money for Duke while not being personally compensated for his efforts, beyond his academic scholarship. The NCAA also is hardly a respected organization, their rules enforcement and decision making seem haphazard.
That being said, I don't see anyway this new comp program will accomplish anything other than destroy NCAA football and basketball.
Instead of the $1,000 handshake, big donors can now hire a great athlete to endorse their business for the dollar figure of their choice. You are right, the big donors of OSU, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, etc... will make what now is a great divide, one that is insurmountable in nature to other programs. It will absolutely destroy any competitive balance and thus could obliterate any interest in the sport. The NCAA champion will be the best team anyone could buy.
A college education is extremely expensive today, with room and board I think the "low cost" option EMU provides is close to $70K. For MOST athletes that participate in college sports, a full scholarship is an
incredible value, they play four or five years and leave with a degree for their next life endeavor.
What needs to happen here is that the NFL and NBA need to step up to the plate. There is ZERO reason to require a Zion Williamson spend a year in college before acceptance into your league draft, in fact I would contend that practice to be monopolistic, for the sole purpose of your league having an additional year of evaluating his talents for free. The NBA has already began discussing about expanding their draft and I applaud their decision. John Calipari may not like it but expanding their G League offers a career path for those athletes not desiring a college education.
Will the quality of college athletics be diminished? Hell yes! Message to fans: it already has been. A basketball team that contained Mike Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins talent has not been seen in decades and will not ever be seen again. March Madness excitement, however, is stronger than ever! It is the COMPETITON that trumps the quality for college sports fans.
