NCAA didn't cave. They are just slow-walking this whole thing. They will stall as long as possible, and will keep doing so until they absolutely have to do more. And then they will do as little as they can possibly get away with.

I bet you just nailed this. Watch for some sort of "committee" to be set up to study the feasibility of all this and then just come up with excuse after excuse to stall this. They were on a collision course to being forced to change with no say so in the matter. If they give the appearance of working towards changing it they can if nothing else control the pace at which it happens and maybe limit it in some way.

Each division has to come up with their own rules and specific details. So we'll probably see a rough draft in a few years.

CAn't wait to see where this all leads. Just playing devil's advocate here. But, hey I am Billy Booster, hey Ford Dealership, I'll give you $500k if you keep this on the DL and pay Super Star WR over there $250K. Deal?

Or, hey, I am money hungry Attorney, this standout trackstar star is filing suit, said University is providing more opportunities to football players to make money. That is unfair to my trackstar client bringing your school track championships while football is losing.

Just saying where this can all lead.

Saw a quote from Bowlby the other day who served on the working group. He said that any name and likeness rules will be designed to eliminate anything that approaches "pay for play". Todays announcement also made it clear that protecting the existing recruiting environment would be a priority in crafting each divisions rules regarding N&L. So, I take to mean that appearing in a Wheaties Box or making money off your YouTube Vlog channel will be ok. A new recruit getting $50K for appearing at a boosters dinner party probably wont be ok. Unfortunately, I think its going to be impossible to craft rules that wont leave a lot opportunities for boosters to get in there and alter the recruiting landscape. No doubt there is some of that kind of stuff going on today despite the fact it is flat out against the rules. However, if you paint portions of that pay-for-play area "grey"---then thats an open invitation for everyone to get involved in working the system.

Rules; Nike, Adidas, Bill Self, Calipari, Mike K., UNC, Miami (FL)...they laugh at rules. Rules are always broken. This I am afraid will make the loopholes wider.

Oh yeah I think it will take at least 3-5 years for the NCAA to sift through all the different proposals. 03-lmfao

The NCAA won't move faster than they have to, but they will move.

Because they'll have to...

Tons of states are talking about or already have passed laws allowing for this. Congress is talking about it.

Basically, if the NCAA doesn't come to terms with reality and make some changes relatively soon then they will have a huge mess on their hands. It's true they will never change of their own free will, but they won't have a choice this time.

Like I said in my edited comments---it will end up painting huge swaths of compensation "grey"---which will be an open invitation for everyone to get involved in abusing these grey areas and creating a pay-for-play recruiting market. If you strictly follow the intent of the rules you'll be done for.

Devil is in the details and the NCAA did absolutely nothing regarding the details today.

You can expect that athletes can't undercut an existing school deal (ie. you can't wear Adidas shoes if the school is with Nike) and some sort of protections to make it hard to do sham transactions where Joe Fourstar won't get $100,000 from Bob's Used Cars of Tuscaloosa conditioned on signing with Bama.

Oh yea, there will be a lot of compensation gray areas. Not only that, but those other sports, and the women's sports that you know darn well will start filing discrimination, and un equal opportunities that football and basketball will get. And the topic of said athlete vs the University. Will Universities now be limited on social media posts, propaganda etc... without compensating the athlete. The four and five star athletes can now claim they bring extra marketing opportunities to said college.

Also, it will be rare, but can happen. You have that Zion Williamson type player that can now earn money for their likeness in High School. It won't make them ineligible in college.

Basketball is the real impact. We had the bribery scandal because the big shoe companies wanted the high school / AAU stars playing basketball at the colleges that were affiliated with the company.

Let them sign those kids to shoe contracts soon as they finish their senior season of high school and maybe the NBA will give them a path in the next CBA.

RE: The NCAA just caved
Bunch of bologna.

http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/medi...ortunities

Quote:The Board of Governors’ action directs each of the NCAA’s three divisions to immediately consider updates to relevant bylaws and policies for the 21st century, said Michael V. Drake, chair of the board and president of The Ohio State University.

Yep, they're stalling.

Quote:Assure student-athletes are treated similarly to non-athlete students unless a compelling reason exists to differentiate.

There it is. "You can do it if we say you can."

Quote:Make clear the distinction between collegiate and professional opportunities.

In other words, "No, you can't do that or "No, you can't make that much money. We don't think you have that much marketability."

Quote:The working group will continue to gather feedback through April on how best to respond to the state and federal legislative environment and to refine its recommendations on the principles and regulatory framework. The board asked each division to create any new rules beginning immediately, but no later than January 2021.

Uh huh. Most state legislatures are session through the first few months of the year only. The NCAA is hoping to forestall more laws with this announcement.

Not to be a downer, but I wouldn't hope for any group licensing deals between players and the NCAA, not even after the NCAA is forced to bend on the issue of athletes' person NIL. Not unless Alston or some other suit puts an official end to "amateurism."

They're skittish about that prospect because the Ninth Circuit CoA has warned them they will lose all claim to amateurism if they "offer" pay that's unrelated to education.

They set a deadline of 1/1/21

Realistically it'll probably be around summer/fall 2020 which means the soonest we get a video game is probably summer 2021.

Still, baby steps
