Sun Belt has to be enjoying new TV deal
The Sun Belt's contract with ESPN guarantees a set number of games each season with the option for the network to pick up additional games.

So far this year ESPN, or more accurately ESPNU has picked up the following additional games beyond the guaranteed number of games.
Mississippi State at Louisiana
Memphis at South Alabama
Memphis at ULM
Appalachian State at South Alabama
AState at ULM

All Saturday pickups in addition to the usual weeknight games ESPN offers the Sun Belt and all but the first taken under the 12 day notice provision after the start of the season.

Championship game was the only one guaranteed to be on a Saturday under the contract.
The Saturday regular games all in excess of the minimum guarantee

AState is AT ULM not the other way around

RE: Sun Belt has to be enjoying new TV deal
Its been a pretty good deal for the Sunbelt. The nice thing for the fans is they always know where to go. With CUSA, which has several different broadcast partners--it can sometimes be difficult to track down a CUSA game for the more casual fans. I know a couple of times last I tried to find a N Texas game I was interested in checking out that was on STADIUM and I finally just gave up.

MAC has seen a similar uptick this season. I think it has to do with the AAC moving up to more telecasts on ABC and less Tier II exposure.

Saturday, September 7th
UAB @ Akron (CBS Sports)

Saturday, September 21st
Temple @ Buffalo (ESPNU)

Saturday, September 28th
Buffalo @ Miami (ESPNU)
Central Michigan @ Western Michigan (CBS Sports)

Saturday, October 12th
Miami @ Western Michigan (ESPNU)
Toledo @ Bowling Green (CBS Sports)

Saturday, October 19th
Kent State @ Ohio (CBS Sports)

The ACC Network plus ESPN diverting a few B12 games to ESPN+ is helping.

AAC has escaped the ESPN News backwater, I wrap up most Saturday nights especially after driving home from a game, flipping between a P12 game or two and the usual two MWC games kicking at 9pm or 9:30pm Central.

I figure the Sun Belt will see another one or two more games picked up this year.

I'd trade TV deals with AAC and what MWC has now despite the Facebook games MWC has (and presumably what MWC ends up signing) but I'd absolutely not trade with CUSA with the games scattered over creation and wouldn't trade with MAC that is so heavily loaded with weeknight games

It's the ACC Network and Big 12 having like 6-8 games moved to ESPN+ that is creating the space.

The conference networks are showing more games, they aren't just 11am Central and then nothing like when they started out.

Its also making the CUSA/SBC realignment dream more difficult.

First it was the 10 team money split in the SBC vs. 14 team split in CUSA. Then for the past few years SBC is decidedly better top to bottom in FB. Now the TV deal is also a step up over CUSA.

A split CUSA is facing the prospect of splitting and expanding without SBC call ups this time around. This is why I predict the replacement for UAB if they were to leave for the AAC might have to be NMSU at this point due to the advancement of the SBC.

Trickle down from the P5. ESPN+ is also taking off and the MAC is loaded on that.

CUSA with its TV situation is seeing no benefit from it.

JMU is an eastern option. Also---the one team that WOULD almost certainly jump from the SB to CUSA is Texas St. UMass, UConn, and Liberty are all viable CUSA replacement options as well. So, I think things would have to be pretty dire before CUSA would have to reach all the way to N Mexico for replacement teams in the current environment.

One thing I'm certain of is that Texas State would see the value of paying Sun Belt exit fees to join CUSA and join so many other Texas schools

UAB is in CUSA West. If the replacement is in the east that would mean MTSU would have to move west which is not happening.

UMass is not going to agree to join CUSA in its current format as an all sport member. A CUSA East split maybe. UConn seems to want to go the BYU route at the moment.

I guess Texas St would do it but would CUSA want it? With already 4 Texas schools?

RE: Sun Belt has to be enjoying new TV deal
According to the extension the Sun Belt and ESPN signed in 2018...

"Beginning with the 2020-21 year, linear network football games at Sun Belt home venues will expand to a minimum of 10 games a year on a combination of ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU."

I don't know if those 10 include the title game, or if it's 11 guaranteed with the title game.

Looks like ESPN saw fit to increase the exposures a year early. And are doing more than the new minimum.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the Sun Belt is getting a lot of extra ESPNU windows in year 1 of the ACC network. ESPNU lost 5 ACC games this year.

And App State's success has driven some of the extra exposure.

RE: Sun Belt has to be enjoying new TV deal
With the new ESPN deal starting it has been good for the Sun Belt to have a couple explosive teams. It has also been good for ESPN. The Wednesday night games had good ratings, better than some AAC and lower level P5 match ups for the week. The ratings have been good especially for the price ESPN paid for the games.

As to what games might be picked up by ESPN for the rest of the season;

Week 12: App@GaSt
Week 13: GaSo@stAte or Troy@UL
Week 14: App@Troy (Friday night) and ULM@UL (Saturday)

The Memphis games have to do with them being in the AAC. So, any top teams from both AAC and SBC would become big games for ESPN.

A Week 11 Saturday TV game could be announced today or tomorrow. Could be GaSo@Troy at 3:30pm or GaSt@ULM @5pm. Neither have announced TV times or network.

Nobody is seriously thinking in a C-USA/Sun Belt realignment.

The last thing C-USA needs is mediocre Sun Belt teams joining a mediocre conference to make it more mediocre especially in basketball.

Thanks but no thanks.

As for the tv deal, at least the SBC has it better than the MAC with its weeknight games.

When SBC announced the deal with ESPN they were met on this board with laughter. It is proving to being worth more for each party involved.

The Sun Belt probably will end up hosting 15 games on ESPN/2/U this season with the majority on Saturdays and mostly on 2/U.
