And WKU is recruiting NBA prospects...

Rice has to recruit actual students, not one-and-dones who couldn't care less about going to class.

There’s nothing stopping us from recruiting one and dones.

We used to recruit one and dones in baseball with ease (see: Holt, Brock).

WTF are you talking about? Holt was a lone exception. Name one other JUCO who played just one year for Rice Baseball. Sinisi could have left after one year after transfering, as he was Sophomore-eligible for the draft in 2002, but stuck around for another year. Aside from the C/3B JUCO transfer who played an injury-proned season for us in 2017 (and who left because he wasn't going to get any playing), I can't think of any other transfer who left without playing at least 2 years for us.

The vast majority of our big 3 players are marginally concerned with going to class.

You can probably count on one hand the number of people we've recruited who didn't have other options for scholarship... and probably 90% of them had at least the same or better 'path to the pros' as we do in terms of visibility.

If you choose to come to Rice, you've INTENTIONALLY chosen the more difficult path. We don't have 10,000+ students and 2,000+ classes where you can 'hide' and remain eligible without taking any serious classes... not that we don't have any easy classes, but we don't have 60+ hours of them. At SOME point long before graduation, you're going to be in a class of <10 people where you would be easily exposed.

Lots of Rice athletes don't come from a similar background to the average Rice student, and this is one of our Strengths, not weaknesses...

but why would you attend Rice to play football or basketball if you weren't serious about your education?

I'll say one positive thing about JK, I sent him a really short email after the UAB loss and he sent me a really long, detailed response. I appreciated that, but my response to him was that I am neither a large enough donor or an influential enough alumni to justify such long emails in the future 03-lmfao
