New Conference Opinion.
If a new theoretical 12 team conference could come about (with all major sports Football, Basketball, Baseball, Softball) of the best teams from the MAC, C-USA, and Sunbelt. Who would be the 12 you would select.

Rules to make the conference:

*only teams from these three conference

*teams must be full members, no associate members

*market sizes don’t necessarily need to be considered, (not trying to hear a list of a bunch of schools in major cities)

That's quite a mishmash. Taking schools out of the MAC for this new conference doesn't seem possible.

I think you have to try to preserve some cultural divisions which is another way to say no Great Lakes schools.

New Conference North:

Ohio - Athens is geographically located in Appalachia and has some basketball tradition
Miami - Ohio needs a buddy and this is the best football option
Western Kentucky - For Ohio and Miami
ODU - For Virginia
Appalachian State - For football and NC
Charlotte - For NC and SC
Middle Tennessee - For Basketball and TN

Maybe you call this the upper south division

Lower South

Ga State - For Georgia
FIU - For Florida
FAU - For Florida
Troy - For Florida Panhandle and Alabama
South Alabama - For Alabama and Mississippi
Louisiana - For Louisiana
Rice - For Texas and academic prestige

This is the best I can do, but they have so little in common.

I agree about the Great Lake schools the only one that made senses out of the MAC for me was Ohio and maybe Buffalo

I would say

North:
Ohio
Marshall
App State
ODU
WKU
Arkansas State

South:
UNT
Rice
Louisiana
USM
Troy

Last one would be UAB or Georgia Southern

RE: New Conference Opinion.
It would have to be a conference based around the lower Midwest, Southeast and Texas.

Rice
Texas State
Arkansas State
Missouri State
Louisiana
Louisiana Tech
USM

Ohio
Marshall
ODU
JMU
App
Charlotte
Georgia State

I know I broke the rules but if you want tight geographical divisions then MO State is needed for the sw division and they bring good basketball and baseball. JMU rounds out the other division for different reasons (football.) If needed, UTSA can be added to the SW division and UAB to the east. Honestly though, your better off with the above 12 as most of them still have their best days in front of them and have the opportunity to be more than just regional schools.

Truthfully, a best of league makes zero sense though. C-USA and the SBC need to swap some members and regionalize into bus leagues. Save the travel money and limit midweek games among the Little 3 to no more than 1 home game a year.

Very well done overall. I would go 14 schools.

So, I might remove Troy for Toledo and remove South Alabama for UAB. Buffalo (though geographically removed) needs to be in the mix too. So I might add Buffalo and drop Middle or Western (and, full disclosure ... I attended MTSU).

You would want a mix of football, hoops, media markets and academics. These 14 give you that. And Rice, strong in academics, gives you big-time baseball.

RE: New Conference Opinion.
An eastern seaboard conference is more viable than what its ever been before with UConn also available.

North
UConn-FB
UMass-FB
Buffalo
Marshall
Old Dominion

South
Charlotte
App State
Georgia St
FAU
FIU

10 teams in FB which I think is about the minimum to have divisions (4 in division games and 4 crossovers). Split the money less ways than in CUSA. 8 teams for one autobid in basketball.

App State gets promoted up because of how well its football has performed. They will put butts in seats in Charlotte, Georgia St, Old Dominion, Marshall.

Panama will scream of course that Georgia St is too good for this and belongs in the AAC. One win against Tennessee doesn't make a program AAC ready but they bring a lot of value to a east coast alignment.

Its not culture. Its about cost. The going rate in the MAC for a new FB or BB coach including benefits is about 750k. A fair amount and double with the FCS conferences pay so its enough to attract quality coaches. But to move up to an AAC type situation the salaries will have to increase to 2 million if not 3 or 4 million to compete.

The MAC has a national TV package now and 6 bowl games for 2020. Basically the same structure as the AAC without the spending.

One of the things I predicted once the whole G5 system was put into place is that it would be deeper than its predecessor the non-AQ and lead to more contenders for the NYD bowl over time. We are starting to see that this year with SMU, App State and Boise all at the same time having access bowl type seasons.

When 8 team playoff comes in (so much more exciting than 4) you'll see the addition of 2 more NYD bowls plus a second slot for the G5 in response to their growth. This way the G5 championship games become more of a play-in for it.

It's the CUSA schools that have the issue, at 14 football members which is too big for a G5 conference and no national TV deal. UAB is stuck playing in the west where they are not a good fit. If they could move to the AAC that would help to smooth out the divisions.

SBC schools would be compelled to go along with a regional alignment. Obviously App St, Charlotte, Georgia St, ODU should all be playing together.

I'm a little surprised Akron isn't getting any mentions. They have a pretty strong basketball tradition and they're basically the Gonzaga or Boise State of college soccer. I mean, if the conference is football-centered, they don't belong, but you can do far worse than them among the MAC teams.

Softball = “major sports” now? Hmmm

And baseball is kinda iffy, too.
