Look a t Alabama State versus UAB? 40,000 fans and a lot of them from Alabama State. The fanbase at HBCUs seemed to come out even if their team sucks. Incarnate Word fans also came out to help sell tickets for UTSA. Eastern Washington, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Montana, Montana State and James Madison fans are more passionate as well. E. Washington had over 10,000 people for one of their home games this year. They must have put in temp seatings to sell more tickets?

Fans in the stands are predicated on winning. If you take the top FCS teams and put them into the G5 down goes their winning percentages especially some of the small market, limited recruiting base programs you suggest.

NDSU, SDSU, JMU... not one of their winning percentage goes down in a G5 league. You may want to take a look at the rosters of the two "Dakota" State schools to see where they get their kids from. Strong FB programs with facilities that are better than a lot of G5 schools plus FCOA and they aren't having any issues recruiting outside their area.

EWU, Montana, MSU? Possibly, can't speak for them.

As great as what App State is even their winning percentage went down moving up to FBS in a starter league. Georgia Southers program completely imploded.

Wuuut?

Not sure where all the GaSouthern hate is coming from. We were 13 seconds from beating Minnesota this year (even though our offense looks terrible). We won 10 games last year, and are 2-0 in bowl games. Without the Tyson Summers Coaching fiasco, we are 21-5 in conference play.

Edit: maybe you mean GaState? This will be their first real winning season and will set numerous school firsts and records.

Was talking to Kit Kat saying they imploded. Must have been the year before they were 2-10. Time sure flies.

Georgia Southern in the FBS

2014 - 9 wins
2015 - 9 wins - Won bowl game
2016 - 5 wins
2017 - 2 wins
2018 - 10 wins - Won bowl game

They made a bad coaching hire that they fired quickly.

Depends. Alabama State loses a lot, but the fans still show up. NC A&T, Southern and Texas Southern showed fan support no matter if their teams lose. They would like to see FBS schools.
North Dakota State and South Dakota State could both be fine at the FBS level. They know how to beat FBS schools including beating the cartel 5.

That is a false statement we played Texas Southern this year and they are only 3 hours away and maybe 50 people showed up, and I’ve said it before, anyone who wants a bus conference... go back to FCS

Softball = “major sports” now? Hmmm

And baseball is kinda iffy, too.

Just out of curiosity what do you consider a major sport football and men’s basketball only?
Yes. Baseball and women’s basketball are sorta-kinda on the edge, depending on the school. WBB is a major sport at UConn and a few other places, for example. But not everywhere. Baseball is a major sport at Arizona State and some other places. But not everywhere.

All the other college sports are gravy: nice for the kids and coaches who are participating. But *Absolutely Irrelevant* for anything to do with realignment and media-negotiations.

Will, I am not talking about FBS in Louisiana, but schools like Rice. A lot of their friends from high school do attend to instate colleges and universities. They could go home, meet up with friends and attend the games. A lot of these kids do not have the money to actually go out of state.

Give me the current Sun Belt, kick out Texas St, ULM, South Alabama, and Coastal and add Rice, USM, and Marshal, and UAB

Louisiana
Arkansas State
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
Troy
App State
USM
Marshall
UAB
Rice

If you need 12 I'd probably throw UNT and MTSU in there.

That keeps 7 together to maintain the auto bids. Utilizes all 24 teams in CUSA/SBC. Keeps schools that don't want to affiliate with one another apart.

RE: New Conference Opinion.
Defined regionalism makes a conference great and you also need enough FB schools to make it interesting.

This is where I think Troy gets interesting. Great FB and very close to Georgia yet forgotten about without the big media market.

North
Marshall
JMU
ODU
Appalachian St
Charlotte

South
Georgia St.
Ga Southern
Troy
FAU
FIU

So if you analyze this FB wise.....

Top Crust: App St, Troy, Marshall
Aspirational: ODU, GSU, GA Southern, FAU
Happy to be there: JMU, Charlotte, FIU

This way there is a clear top to the conference, like the SBC has instead of just marketz-marketz entries.

Switch out JMU for CCU. No need to bring up another school. CCU has good athletics all the way around. The new coach was a winner in FCS and has already notched their first P5 win.

Come on man....of course Texas Southern is going to go watch the Rice game, it is literally a 9 minute walk between the two campuses.

RE: New Conference Opinion.
The MAC arguably has the best bowl arrangement of the G5 conferences.

This is the top of the lineup. A startup conference in the mid atlantic would be starting from scratch.

1) CFP Access Bowl vs. P5
2) Arizona Bowl vs. MWC #2
3) Quick Lane Bowl vs. B1G
4) Bahamas Bowl vs. CUSA

Part of the reason the MAC is able to get the Arizona Bowl and Quick Lane is that it has a unique region to it and not just another southern based G5 conference.

Plus if you were an Ohio or Buffalo in a southern based conference you would end up playing a MAC school in a bowl game half the time.

The ideal size for a new G5 conference is 9 to 10 football teams. This way its possible to split the money less ways and have a round robin schedule. The MWC has to kind of be at 12 because of the geography. The AAC would love to be at 10 if it lost 2 schools. The MAC is better at 12 because it keeps them larger than the Horizon and MVC.
