Hoping Brannen doesn’t have the auto-bench with 2 fouls in first half and 3 in the 2nd half
Mick single handedly lost the Ohio State game last year
Benched Jarron for the half with 10 minutes to go
He finished the game with 2 fouls and 22 points
Mick’s game management equalled Marvin Lewis @ times
Iowa game he subs Nysier in with 4 fouls when UC was on DEFENSE
I expect Brannen to be significantly better when it comes to the autobench. NKU was middle of the pack in two foul participation last season. Cronin was always among the strictest adherence to the two foul autobench.

Terry's comments about Mick needing to be the BMOC and asserting his authority isn't surprising.
The difference between how Mick and CJB treat Cumberland is interesting.
It's good to hear they do more teaching and shooting drills during practice as opposed to just running and getting yelled at.
No words were more true as to when Terry said no one remembers 30 win seasons (except for at reunions). People remember what you did in the NCAA tournament.

Great interview and insight into pre-season practices. I'm looking forward to the start of the season and the changes to how the team plays...just under 2 weeks!

I finally had a chance to listen to most of it and Terry's enthusiasm always makes it enjoyable. One thing I missed, or just maybe it wasn't mentioned, was Jarron's foot injury and if he's fully recovered and ready to roll. As Jarron goes, so go the Bearcats this year.

We never had a coach at UC before Mick be the BMOC and assert his authority. Lol

RE: Chad Brendel Podcast with Terry Nelson
Finally had time to listen to the podcast this morning.
If you have not listened yet, turn down the sound on the FB game you are watching and play it.
IMO, this is one of the best podcasts from Chad that I have heard. Learned a lot about how our new coach is approaching things, and Terry had some fun stories.
Well done sir.

Sitting in a big sugar maple in N Mi with my bow across my lap listening to Chad’s dulcet tones. Always a good listen.

I’d have a lot higher chance of falling asleep if I was on a couch watching the NFL.
It’s 45 degrees, sunny, a little breeze and not a cloud in the sky. Life ain’t bad.

There is a bit of a silver lining. Vogt played his best basketball towards the end of the year and since hes been here he has added atleast 15 pounds

Smart coaches and teams get their best players on the floor and don't worry about fitting the 2 big, one wing, 2 guard roles. I know Mick was married to the two traditional bigs, but it was telling that his one sweet 16 team came when the brawl forced him to go with a 4 guard lineup and it worked so well he stuck to it. That team was so much better late in the season than at the start and wound up in the Big East tournament finals and sweet 16. A huge part of that was getting its best players on the floor.
This team has wings with the size and skill that we don't need to play with a traditional two bigs all the time. Yea the best case for this team is Diarra makes a huge leap and we have the ability to play 2 traditional bigs against the best comp at a high level AND have the ability to play small. However, i like our wings. I like the size and skill. I believe in Tre Scott and think he will be huge this year. I think the bigs can at least let us play traditional bigs from time to time when we need to and give us depth and at best one or two end up being more. I think we have a ton of flexibility with what we can do and I like that. You don't have to be married to two traditional bigs and I'm optimistic Brannen won't be.

Let's not forget Mick's inability to solve the passive 2-2-1 zone press McCaffrey put on simply trying to change the tempo of the game after we got out to a 18-5 lead.
They weren't even pressing as much as just trying to slow us down... and we got a 10 second call on us walking the ball up.

I went to 3 NKU games last year. Not a big sample at all but I’ve seen Vogt in person more than some. He’s a decent player for his style, but his game is not a power player. That is not his game and just telling him to be a banger down low because he added 15 lbs doesn’t make it so. There is a reason his game had him in the horizon which isn’t a terrible conference many years but it’s a way softer brand than the AAC. Vogt is going to struggle against teams with size. Teams like Houston that have 15 to give in the post, he may end up with a case of PTSD. He’s in for a real eye opener at times this year. This is a big step up for him.
The back-up center from a bad Valpo team that finished in 2nd to last place in the Missouri Valley Conference? Like i said, at least he’s a body that has 5 to give.
Don’t care what type of wing talent you have in the AAC, if you can’t defend around the rim and rebound well enough you are not finishing towards the top.

Plenty of teams that play small do both those things. Ideally, UC will be able to play both ways, but Mick's 2nd best team and only Sweet 16 team primarily played 4 wings and Yancy Gates. They still rebounded and still protected the rim. You can defend different ways and still be effective. Don't need to be married to the traditional 2 big, 1 wing, 2 guard lineup.

Keep in mind that last year in the offseason Nelson said that Scott was adding lots of weight and the staff envisioned him as being The Guy in the paint and was going to go Beast Mode for UC ...
It’s October and I try to use a filter. Enough years of offseasons have taught me that at least.

Put a Yancey on this team and we can talk.
Vogt and the Spanish back up and Diarra ain’t a Gates.

Tre Scott was great last year.
I don’t see Brannen playing the traditional lineup much if Vogt and Sorolla are both struggling
I see Brannen as somebody who will coach to his roster’s strength versus the old ball coach forcing his style no matter the roster

He was great but he did a lot of damage away from the paint. My point was that was not what Nelson was saying would happen. He said it was going to be a Fortson type of role. Not so much.

RE: Chad Brendel Podcast with Terry Nelson
It's all just speculation until we see them roll the ball out later this week and certainly for the opener in Columbus. But I'm inclined to agree with bearcatmark in that this team can win a lot, even if Trevon Scott shoulders a larger burden down low, because of the guard play.
I guess I'd be concerned more about the backcourt if Jarron had left early, his cousin had gone to Michigan and we were completely rebuilding there. SMU won a lot in this conference with mostly great guards and wings. It can be done. And when UC has struggled in recent seasons it's often been the nights when outside shooting failed to produce enough points.
