The fact he was able to get UConn not just a full Independent schedule for 2020 in a matter of about 3.5 months, actually a quality, fan-interested schedule is truly remarkable. For Edsall, or whomever is UConn's Head Coach, will not have Independence as a hindrance in recruiting, that's for sure.

Well done, UConn.

Don't you think he was working on this in secrecy prior to the BE announcement knowing that UConn was leaving the AAC and knowing there was a high likelihood the AAC would boot their FB program when the rest of the programs left. 04-cheers

Aren't you the same person that's been loudly proclaiming that UConn genuinely thought they'd stay in the AAC as a football-only and was caught unprepat when that wasn't the case?

EDIT: Or am I thinking of pesik? Apparently it's not just the G5 programs that are interchangeable to us, but their posters too.

Mighta been me?

No, no. If it was a Big East fan I'd have mentally filed it differently. All I remember is AAC and a bunch of dancing smiley faces.

Panite does indeed inexplicably spam the smilies. One might find it irritating if one were irritated by such garbage.

I'm impressed. IMO, this 2020 indy schedule is clearly more attractive than an AAC schedule would be.

Seems more UConn is handing the buy game money to their visitor MTSU and also doing a home and away. So instead of a straight buy game, it seems like MTSU gets buy game money for the 2020 visit to Connecticut, like a pure buy game contract, AND the 2021 visit by UConn for free, like a Home & Home contract.

If so, good deal for them ... no wonder they agreed.

What UConn is clearly "paying" is playing as the body bag for Ole Miss while someone else gets the body bag money ... unless they are giving a discount to Ole Miss, in which case the money to keep MTSU whole would be an addition cash outlay on top of that opportunity cost.

Ole Miss had Middle Tennessee on 10/24. I assume MTSU will now play UConn.
Liberty had a bye on 10/31. They already had 12 games scheduled. I assume they're dropping Virginia to play UConn.
San Jose State and Army were playing 11/14. Army had a bye week 11/28.

Hard to see why Liberty would drop UVA or MTSU would drop Ole Miss.

Have to have the game in another year and UConn paying a bunch.

In interpreting the article, it looks like UConn is essentially playing MTSU’s guarantee game at Ole Miss, but MTSU is still getting the payout.

I read it that way too. Whoever is running the UConn scheduling effort is doing a good job, that is creative thinking there.

Creative, or desperate. A fine line.

Just a reminder that UConn voluntarily paid extra to leave the AAC two seasons early, which should have been a clear indicator that the AD was confident in their ability to fill out a schedule....

Creative and desperate. Creative, because it is a novel idea that has paid off with a good schedule. Desperate because, well, 2020 is just next year so obviously the clock was/is ticking pretty fast.

Oftentimes, necessity is the mother of invention.

RE: UConn's 2020 schedule almost complete
I think it would be beneficial for not just UConn but all involved if there was some kind of arrangement for FB/BB series (maybe even Olympic sports) between UConn Cuse, BC, Rutgers UMass. id even throw in Temple, Army, Pitt and maybe WVU. Renew some old BE BB rivalries while offering fans a regional opponent in FB

Curious though, Is there a reason why UConn cant/wont schedule OOC games against AAC members. Surely they must have holes in their schedules. Bitterness , holes filled by another AAC member? or is there more to it?

In football? They can/are. They've got a buy game at UCF in either 2021 or 2022 and Temple's AD have a quote recently that they were working on a series with UConn. It's mostly just that outside of Temple and maybe Cincy UConn just doesn't have much in the way of ties to the teams in the conference, which is how we wound up in the current situation to begin with. The UCF thing is about wanting to be in Florida in any capacity for recruiting purposes as much as anything else.

Why would they have holes in their schedules? The conference will create a conference schedule which give each member 8 conference games, just as it would have done had UConn not left.

If you like, you can think of it as one team that UConn would have been visiting will instead see one team that UConn would have been hosting, as if the four away trips by UConn are replaced by the four schools that would have gone to UConn to play a conference away game. It's slightly different from that, because of the divisionless play, but same basic principle.

If any happen to have holes in their OOC schedule, they can talk to UConn if it looks like a UConn shaped hole, now that UConn is OOC.

The irony, of course, was that Uconn led the old BE effort to "boycott" scheduling BC after they left in 2012.

The bigger question would be, WHY Uconn would want to schedule AAC member programs while their underlying logic was that Uconn fans did not care or want to see AAC programs?

I don't think the answer is "bitterness", because UCF and UConn just signed for a 2021 UConn buy game.

It's a number of things.

1. It's early. UConn started scheduling as an indy less than 6 months ago. Schedules are set years in advance.

2. Most of the AAC schools are trying to schedule as many P5 games as they can, either to look "P6-er" or just to cash the checks. UConn can't help anybody there.

Let's look at who the AAC *does* schedule. Next 4 years OOC, from FBSchedules.com:

(I'm sure one or two of the "P5 one-and-dones" are part of home-and-home or 2-for-1 series where I don't see the return game)

Cincinnati:
2 FCS, 2 Open probably FCS,
Local G5 Rival: Miami-O, annual series
G5 Other: Western Michigan (part of home-and-home)
P5 home-and-home (Indiana, @Indiana, @NCSU, @Pitt)
P5 one-and-done (@Nebraska, @Notre Dame, @Arkansas)

East CArolina:
3 FCS, Open date in 2023 for FCS game
Local G5 Rival: Marshall (3 games), Appalachian State (2 games)
P5 home-and-home: South Carolina, @SC, @BYU
G5 other: Georgia State (part of home-and-home)
2022 FBS open date.

Houston:
FCS: None, Open date 2022
Local G5 Rival: Rice (annual series), UNT, UTSA, @UTSA
P5 home-and-home: @Wazzu, Texas Tech, @Tech, Kansas, @KU, BYU, @BYU
P5 one-and-done: @Vanderbilt
2022 open date

Memphis:
FCS: 3 games, open date 2023
Local G5 rival: Arky State annual series, USTA, @UTSA, UNT, @UNT
P5 home-and-home: Miss State, @Miss State,
P5 one-and-done: @Purdue, @Missouri

That's a third of the league, which I'm calling a decent sample. They want to schedule P5s, they want to schedule local G5s, plus one FCS game a year. UConn doesn't help them do any of that.

That's the other side of the coin. UConn only has so many September (OOC season) weekends. It's just not a match on either side.

RE: UConn's 2020 schedule almost complete
If UConn can schedule Cuse, BC, Rutgers, UMASS, Buffalo, Temple, Army, Pitt and maybe WVU on a regular basis from the northeast part of the country: then add Liberty, BYU, UCF, USF, UTSA, UNLV. and Hawaii to their regular schedule they will be ok.

They will be providing their fans games with their neighbors, Florida beaches, Hawaii beaches, sin city, Disney World and a revival. Now that's a schedule!!!
