Women are predicted to finish 5th in the CAA.
JMU is the near unanimous favorite

Any insight on how this team is looking?

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
I know UNCW is a men's basketball school (rightfully so), but I do believe women's basketball has a chance this year to take a major step. Obviously Smith and Suggs are the headliners coming into the season, but I really believe that Jessica Munoz is a difference maker (former McD's All-American nominee). Also, not sure if they're redshirting Sunshine McCrae or not, but she has CAA Rookie of the Year potential from what I watched on film and saw statistically.

Having Vason, Thybulle and Crisp available at point is big. And there's good depth at every position right now. Plus, it looks like Micah Hoggatt (10pnts, 7rebs in the exhibition) might've matured a little bit and found her rhythm. If Tate could splash some 3-pointers, that would certainly help.

I think a preseason fifth is low, but they're not a first-place team yet. If nothing else, this team will be fun and should have a comparable and likely better season than last year.

Thanks Alex. Plus, don't forget 8 players are 6' or taller. Including a 6'4" freshman.

That's a big squad! Should provide ample opportunities for 2nd chance points as well as limit the opposition to one shot per possession. "Should".

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
The Women's team takes on Wake Forest tomorrow night on the road. Wake was picked dead last (15th) by both the Coaches and Blue Ribbon Panel, with 0 Preseason All-ACC Players. But this is still a big game against an ACC foe to open the season.

Last year the Demon Deacons went 10-20 and 1-15 in ACC play. They also lost their top scorer, Elisa Penna. Their # 2 scorer, Alex Sharp, returns for her Senior season. The 6-1 guard averaged 12.7 points in 2018-19, with a team-leading 9.3 rebounds per contest. However, she missed 15 games; 5 due to rehabbing a shoulder injury from the previous offseason and another 10 due to a broken hand. Junior forward Ivana Raca also returns after a solid sophomore season where she averaged 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists. She started all 30 contests for the Deacs.

Behind Sharp and Raca are a lot of question marks for a team that averaged just 57.4 points, shot just .278 from 3-point range and racked up 564 turnovers (18.8 per game) on the season.

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
GiGi Smith played 38 of 40 minutes against the Wolfpack. She put up 17 points and 5 rebounds but also had 11 turnovers.

Ahyiona Vason was impressive in her 24 minutes of action as a starter. 12 points on 6-8 shooting, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. How does a 5-4 point guard get 5 rebounds against the # 14 team in the nation? Nice bright spot there.

As a team we had just 3 assists and 21 turnovers. Yikes.

The Women's team continues their 3-game homestand by hosting D-II Mount Olive on Wednesday night at 7.

Kennesaw State then comes to town on Saturday afternoon at 2. KSU is 3-1 and gave Georgia a good fight in Athens (L 80-65).

The ladies escaped with a win over Mount Olive last night, 75-67. The Trojans were a scrappy squad that bothered us with their press nearly all night long.

UMO's head coach, Wendy Lee (20th season), is the wife of Billy Lee, former Campbell coach. Their son is former UNCW assistant Brooks Lee.

Kennesaw State is up next on Saturday at 2 as UNCW wraps up its 3-game homestand.
