Did 23 losses in a row kill Southern Miss football?
While there have been a few bowl games since the 5th longest losing streak in NCAA history , USM football doesn't seem the same anymore and some people still haven't returned since Johnson. Thoughts on this?

Poor coaching hires, apathy surrounding the program, absolutely dreadful ADs, and a terrible CUSA have hurt us far more than any losses.

Has overpaying for mediocre coaches killed Houston football?

We’d have been all right had we built on what Monken left behind. Instead we made the comfort hire and 3 subsequent years of not even sniffing a title in a gawd-awful division of a gawd-awful conference has left people with better things to do.

I still laugh at those stupid fks....

now he's in an arena outside his capacity.....I sincerely hate he made the decision to leave after yr. 3...I told him it was a coin flip....

after hiring Fedora and then Monken you would have thought that they figured it out - that thats the kind of hiring that you needed to do. We were paying both of those coaches more than $500k so it cant be about we don't have the money.

Being thats the case, why didnt they go out and look for another Fedora or Monken?

Because we were looking for a new HC for the 2nd time in 4 years and somebody decided we needed someone with USM ties and who wouldn’t leave us any time soon. That Hopson was just happy to be asked and accepted it for $500K with little negotiation had to have helped the situation, too.

You know, never mind the fact that it was that kind of hire that touched off the 23-game losing streak in the first place.

Reality is Monken left us a week before signing day. We were scrambling to find someone halfway decent.

Yes, Monken's timing hurt us as bad as his decision to leave.

I’d lose the championship every day if it meant we got into the AAC back then.

A bit of that, but moreso their athletics program being able to swim in red ink for decades. Not that UH athletics couldn’t self-sustain, but if it had to, it’d look a lot more like us than a P5 in waiting.

That’s our bugaboo. Other athletic departments can just go out and spend money they don’t have and either the institution will eat it or an increase in student fees will cover it. We can only do a bare minimum of the former, and we’re not a big enough school to get much from the latter. I say this all the time, but while our budget may be near the bottom of FBS, we’re actually on more solid footing than the vast majority.

Virginia’s already cracked down some on gouging students to prop up athletics. Expect more to come.

It’s going to take a while, but a LOT of what’s going on today will come out in the wash. It’s a comin’.
