RE: Official Game Thread: Samford
One thing that hurts Sanders when things are not going well is the lack of communication. He doesn't use social media and the weekly press conferences ask the same questions over and over. That brings me to the radio show, where he doesn't show up until about 20 minutes into the hour long show, hears from Ernie in Kingsport for 15 minutes without getting a question, and maybe answers 1-2 other questions. Fans today want to hear more detail about the program, whether that is fair or not.

My working theory, in the absence of any information, is there there must be a personality conflict or something else internal going on with Thrasher. He won the starting job before the season, got hurt, should be better now, but still hasn't gotten into the game even with mediocre play from our current starter. With the way that players transfer so often anymore if they get their feelings hurt, I doubt Thrasher will be back.

I must say that Sanders lost a lot of trust with the fan base last year with Marchi and his stubbornness to admit his mistake. However, I am just as upset with Mike Rader since he is the wide receivers coach. The first half of last season and this entire season, the receivers have dropped way too many passes. Some of them are seniors that I feel are out there just because of their seniority instead of their talent.

I agree. In lieu of any real information what else are we supposed to think? I enjoy the presser and the coach's show immensely but we usually get very little facts. This is not fun when the team loses close game after close game after close game after close game. If there were some wins on the field all of this would be more tolerable.

Penalties were 6-0. That’s a ZERO. As in none on the home team.

Dealing with the talent flip in the SoCon is confusing. It was App State and GA Southern (larger state schools) that owned the league, especially during the no football/exit league ETSU years. Why this shift from the state schools dominating to the privates? Or, am I overstating this? How does Wofford, for example, seem to round up better talent and coaching than ETSU, a school eight or nine times the size in both enrollment and degrees? Does Wofford spend more money on athletics than ETSU? Can ETSU not leverage its wide ranging degrees and majors in athletic recruiting? Isn’t our budget on par or more than some Sun Belt schools? As has been pointed out many times before, it’s hard not to compare our program with that of Kennesaw State, for example.

I can remember back in the beginnings of 1AA/FCS football that ETSU made a decision to only fund 53 of the 63 allowed scholarships. Under funding was wheat defined our program. Not so now as we have Dr. Noland and dynamic leadership that should allow for a first class SoCon program. We have the 63 scholarships plus one of the best FCS stadiums and support at the top. If we do not win at this level I think it falls back squarely on the coaching.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough.

Penalties for the game Saturday:
ETSU: 6 penalties for 63 yards, one nullified TD, one ejection for phantom targeting contact on the SOCON Defensive POY. Another for unsportsmanlike conduct on a player for disputing the incorrect call. Note: even the replay camera showed the player was trying to avoid contact and only brushed the player. Yet it was “stands as called.”
Samford: zero penalties for zero yards. Numerous uncalled “holds.” Several uncalled helmet contacts with our QB.

We have had problems with phantom calls and blown calls all year. We get not help from the officials for sure.

Maybe someone could call the show Wed night and simply ask the question many want to know and that is the status of Weldon, Thrasher, Couch, Ridell and the like. I'm usually at work during the shows time slot or I would do it myself.

Everyone needs to read the column by Joe Avento in the Johnson City Press Chronicle. Sanders goes off on the whole team. His rant blames the players for every conceivable thing that happened in the game. This is just a continuation of how he talks every week about the team. Why would anyone want to play for him. Even when they won last year, he continually refused to give players credit. His stock answer, they just did their job.

A coach that cares about his players and the program would do everything he could to help the team improve. He takes the opposite approach. His comments indicate that the players do not do what he asks of them and it's all their fault. He should keep his critical comments to team meetings and individual face to face meetings. Airing his insulting comments to the press and blaming the players game after game, IMO, is classless.

Sanders is the face of the program. He's responsible for the product on the field and his product is grossly underachieving.

Billy Taylor and his staff are responsible for the defense. Has the defense performed, yes.

Sanders is responsible for the offense, has it performed, no.

Sanders needs to be accountable for this mess and quit putting all the blame on the players.

The saying goes a "great coach takes responsibility for the mistakes".
