RE: 2019-20 basketball season -
luckyflash, a redshirt is permitted to dress. The can do everything except play in a game or scrimmage. King and Nalls played against Hiram. Williamson played against Towson. Of course, I don't know about the scrimmages. So, it appears the only players eligible for a non-medical redshirt are Hernandez and Nuga, and Nuga is required to redshirt. The fact that Hernandez didn't dress leads me to believe that there is something else going on, such as an injury.

It will be interesting to see how he fits once ready. This team is deep and I like the fact we are not reliant on 1 person to score.

CJ has another problem. He doesn't play a lick of defense.

I would not call this team deep, by any means. Yes, the perimeter has a lot of bodies. But so far there are only two inside players of note in Whittington and Pippen. One is foul prone, and one is playing over 30-minutes a game on ??? knees.

After that, good luck.

I like Bainbridge, but he is a huge dropoff after the first two. Bennett is a clear project and the two players (Beck, AC) most - including me - thought would put Kent over the top have shown absolutely nothing. AC doesn't play at all, and while Beck plays a few minutes, he has yet to do anything that says he'd be anything more than a liability if forced into meaningful time.

If Bainbridge (12-18 minutes) and Bennett (8-10 minutes) aren't getting more meaningful minutes - and producing - by January then I would be very worried about Kent's MAC chances over the long haul.

The Flashes normally tighten up the rotation when the MAC season starts - One noticeable thing from the Fort Wayne game was that they only played 9 guys. It looks like that's what the rotation would look like once MAC season starts. Whittington, Pippen, Simons, Booman, and Peterson starting, with Roberts playing a lot of minutes off the bench. Santiago and Beck rotating in. Bainbridge added in only as needed.

The game with An Ohio State University is going to be interesting - I'd guess it's going to be closer than expected. If it's not a blowout, we should see just the key performers. But if the Buckeyes wear us down, you might see us needing the bottom of the bench.

Ohio State is really good. I am not into "moral" victories, but if we keep it close I will be pleased. Hell, if it's close, let's go ahead and win the damn thing. That said, it could get ugly pretty quickly. Just depends on who shows up.

I know I just spewed something not at all that insightful. Just saying OSU is really good.

Excellent points, Cleveland, about the inside depth. They really need some people to step up. At this point, Bainbridge is the most likely candidate.

Yes he inside depth is my biggest concern too. I'm a little more optimistic on Beck though. I believe he was a late summer addition so probably had less time to fit in. Castillo not being able to contribute is disappointing. I expected him to be a defensive factor. When he got in today he quickly picked up two fouls on the perimeter. Makes me think he plays aggressive defense but the D1 game is a little too fast for him right now. Honestly, the season really hinges on Whittington and Pippen staying healthy and staying out of foul trouble though.

And I don't want to think about the scenario where Pippen leaves this off season.

Good points we need a healthy Pippen but someone needs to spell him on occasion. Looks like another squad that will struggle to it 35% on threes. I think at this point it's hard to make any inferences about the MAC - but no reason a healtly Flash squad can't compete. One another thread I'm amazed at how well the Akorn women are playing - they were supposed to be cellar dwellers.

I'm going to try to round up how all MAC women's teams are doing after KSU's game with Robert Morris. Best record, surprisingly, is Bowling Green at 3-0. All East Division teams are above .500.

Not all that long ago Pippen's status was in doubt. What the heck did Sendy plan on doing in the event he wasn't???

Say what you will, but the fact is that the Flashes were more competitive vs. OSU than UNC was and it’s not close. KSU challenged OSU deep into the second half on the road. UNC did not and got blown out on their home floor. That’s all I’m sayin’.

The MAC as a whole looks real strong again this year. I think there's only 2 or 3 teams outside the top 180 on BPI. WMU is the only team below .500. Akron had a 6 point loss to the current #1 Louisville a couple weeks ago. There's no Buffalo of the last two years, but it's going to be another meat grinder conference schedule likely ending in a single bid again.

Right now I'd put the MAC race at ...

Akron
Toledo
(Bowling Green w/Turner)
Kent
Buffalo
Bowling Green (w/o Turner)
Northern Illinois
Central Michigan
Ohio U.
Ball State
Eastern Michigan
Miami
Western Michigan

Problem is (as usual) with so many MAC East Teams at the top, a lesser MAC West team could slide up and get the No. 4 bye, pending tiebreakers. Also, Akron much improved with mostly jr/sr lineup and OU much better than anticipated.

Injury to a starter would definitely impact all of the top six teams drastically downward, and no MAC team looks to be very deep at this point, based on player minutes ... 7-8 man rotations for everybody.

Akron transfer Wms is the real deal and likely MAC POY if German/Turner don't get it.

Typical MAC.

Honestly, someone is going to have to stop Danny Pippen if he stays healthy. He is playing very well.

I just looked up Williams stats and he is shooting 35% from the floor. Not all that inspiring.

Agree Pippen is doing a lot ... stats-stuffer-- but Kent has five guys in double figures meaning Pippen will really have to be strong in rebs, blks, even assists because his scoring numbers might not be as strong as others (and offense is what gets the post season awards).

Now if you're asking which player I want on MY team ... it would be Pippen. But stepping back from the bias table (and I've seen both this year) I could see where some might favor one over the other.

As for %%% I would think in a non-Buffalo year Jaylin Walker would have been MAC POY last season and his %%% were not particularly stellar, either (but good).

A little too much Akron praise for my taste on this thread. They're improved from last year for sure... But let's not crown yet. They just beat a Marshall team by 12 last night that Toledo beat by 26 a few weeks ago.

Also, Walker never shot below 37% in a season. The Akron dude is at 35%. Let's not crown him yet either.

I will vote then most likely to have their coach burst a blood vessel in his forehead screaming at a ref 30 seconds into a game though. In that regard, they are the clear gold standard of the MAC.

The difference in shooting percentages between Walker, Pippen, and this Williams kid also have to take into account their position. Walker was lower because he is a guard. Bigs should have a higher FG% than guards.
